Congrats JSngry 9000 posts!

Cheers, Jim. I'm coming closer to 1000; that's only 1/10th the number of posts that you have. -

Which Lee Morgan CD/LP Are You Enjoying Right Now?

I'll check out that thread in detail later. The box set is not in sight $$ wise right now, but maybe later on down the road. Listening to SO NEAR, SO FAR right now. Execellent.

People freaked and I guess it was a little vulgar; probably not needed either. However, people should lighten up a bit, it's just a naked woman after all. Kids looking at porn on the net is much more of a problem, IMO. The "race issue" shouldn't even be discussed as far as I'm concerned. So what if it wasn't two people of the same color. There's interracial relationships everywhere nowadays. I just don't understand racism, I guess. It's stupid.

I don't understand the hesitancy. Get it now and savor the set for a lifetime. You're going to like it if you are a Pass fan. You can't not like Joe Pass, IMO. He's one of my favorites, period. Genius, beautiful, fluid, emotional solos everytime out. Don't wait, this one's a keeper, I'm sure of it.

Get a newer Haynes release called BIRDS OF A FEATHER. All-start ensemble, everyone is at the top of their game. Holland, Hargrove, Garrett, and Kikowski (piano). Highly recommended.
-
I thought you dug it; didn't know you liked it that much, however. There is a two-fer that fantasy put out - is POWER TO THE PEOPLE also on that (I think it is)? I think the other album on it is called BLACKNESS or something like that. AMG doesn't give this one a very high rating but that means nothing to me. Anyone have this? Is the Milestone box worth it or should I stick a few of the better single sessions?
-
I'm as fired up about the 3 sounds set as I am about the Hill set. This Select series is excellent, IMO. Great music at a really reasonable price.
-
Can't comment on the set as a whole, but that FOR DJANGO Lp is da shit. Listen to the clips; it's top shelf Pass, IMO. I'm going to probably get this sometime in the new year when I have some $$$ saved up. Get it and tell me what I'm missing out on.

Relatively-progressive piano trio recs in the 60's
pryan replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I understand, RT. I don't have enough trio stuff in general, let alone something to fit your definition. Have you heard Mary Lou Williams' trio stuff from the 70s? I have one album and it's kinda cool in a different sort of way. I forget the title, but I'll mention it maybe tommorow or when I have time to look it up. -
I picked up the Lp version of POWER TO THE PEOPLE. I like it more than some of the classic BN stuff but for different reasons. What do you guys think of this one?
-
Sounds like a really cool idea. I've heard drummers "sing" parts of their solos before (ie. they were kind of "scat drumming", if you know what I mean). Never heard of someone come up with lyrics to a drum solo, however.

McCoy Tyner autobiography
pryan replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Fair enough. I should have noticed the but I was tired last night. That's funny that Herbie forgets about tunes, even. Kinda strange, but not really considering it was 35 years ago. Herbie's moved way beyond what he was doing at that time. -
I picked it up a few weeks ago and really haven't listened to it closely enough yet. BUT, I do like what I've heard. Tony Williams plays beautifully (no surprise there) as does the rest of the ensemble. Mainly Corea's tunes, but there is a couple of standards as well. Getz is ON also. That's about all the comments I feel comfortable making right now.

I don't like to be a nit-picker but how do you define "relatively progressive"? Just curious. -
McCoy Tyner autobiography

So what? Was probably just one of countless sessions McCoy has done. Just because he doesn't remember that particular one, means nothing IMO. It means a lot to you, Bertrand, because you're a Wayne Shorter fanatic, but to McCoy it was just another date and most likely one he wanted to forget. I'd give his book a read, definitely. -
In the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal. It sucks about what happened, but if that's the worst thing you have to deal with then consider yourself lucky.

I have a few albums by Joe (all different contexts). Most recently I picked up a trio session entitled, Eximious. NHOP is on bass. Recommended. The other two albums I own are FOR DJANGO (on Pacific Jazz) and VIRTUOSO. BTW, how is the Pablo solo box? Too much or consitently high quality, or both?
-
I agree with Jim on this one. I admit it took me a lot longer to dig this one than, say, THINKING OF HOME (one I really liked right off the bat), but this one is good in its own sweet way. I like everything I have with Mobley as the leader. Can't wait for X-Mas; I'm getting the Hank 50s Mosaic!
-
I'm REALLY enjoying this one. So much of the pop/R &B/whatever coming out today sounds quite contrived to my ears whereas this one does seem "genuine", like Jill actually means what she says. The feeling she puts into each song is deep and the tunes and lyrics themselves are very powerful and strike a chord in me that even a lot of jazz records/tunes do not. Don't hesitate to grab this one, you won't regret it.

I've only listened to that Berlin/ Montreux album once (the first Lp). Planning on spinning the second one soon. I like the group w/ George Lewis quite a bit. Lewis is a motherfucker on trombone and matches Braxton's level of virtuosity, IMHO.

I used to really like those Nerds candies when I was younger. Gonna have to see if I can find them again. Maybe I'll turn into an even bigger nerd!

Human beings are imperfect by nature. Jazz musicians are human beings. Therefore, jazz musicians are imperfect. I like it when guys really stretch out/challenge themselves and their audience. Makes you feel a bit uncomfortable. Sometimes that's a good thing. You're not going anywhere if you don't try new things and challenge your normal ways of thinking.
