  1. Thanks for the preview. I'm hoping to be able to catch a few of these programs, especially next week and the X-Mas Ayler show.
  2. I don't get this sentence. Please elaborate.
  3. "Progressive" is a strange term to use for this subject, IMHO. I picked up PIANO IN THE FOREGROUND about a month ago and find it to be quite "challenging" but also very rewarding at the same time. Who's to say that Teddy Wilson's trio stuff isn't "progressive" in its own right?
  4. Damn, I missed the show again! I'm going to have to stay in one of these Saturday nights...
  5. If you happen to see the Mal Waldron Black Lion on CD at a decent price, don't hesitate to pick it up. Those two bonus tracks add almost 36 minutes of music –– music that's worth the price of admission all by itself (at least in my book). Edit: In fact, frankly, I see the solo-piano material (the first nine tracks on the CD) as "bonus material" to the live stuff at the end. (Yeah, I'm weird that way. ) Yeah, I'll check it out, for sure. That's quite a bit of extra material. The not-so-good thing is that this Lp is the only Waldron in my collection; you don't his stuff around these parts very much.
  6. All I have to say is check out the Blackhawk "live" sessions, w/Wynton Kelly, PC, Jimmy Cobb, and Hank Mobley on tenor. This is "straight-ahead", and about as swingin' a rhythm section as you'll find in the history of jazz (seriously!). I don't think you'll be disappointed.
  7. The only Mosaic set I own that is on vinyl is the George Lewis BN sessions. This set has a wide variety of "source materials", therefore making it difficult to tell how good the Lps are versus the CDs. However, I must say that the sessions from RVG's studio have excellent sound, although admittedly I can't say how excellent b/c I don't have a high-end record-playing set up.
  8. Neat story there, RT. I have that album, but the Lp version, so I'm without the trio tracks unfortunately. I really like it as a solo piano album, however. Thanks for reminding me I own this one; perhaps I'll play it today.
  9. I'm in. PM is coming your way, Dan.
  10. That was cool! Thanks for posting that, David.
  11. How are the albums that Woody did with Freddie Hubbard in the mid-80s?
  12. BITCHES BIX (try saying that three times fast) or... BIX' BITCHES
  13. Funny you mention the 50s Mobley set, Shawn. I have a feeling I'll be getting that from "Santa" this X-Mas.
  14. I see your points, Chuck. It is a bit "sketchy" when someone solicits a sale with his first post and pretends as though everyone here is his "friend". If he had established himself no one would have questioned him. Maybe he is new to these types of BB's, maybe not. Nevertheless, Chuck's comments should not be frowned upon, IMHO.
  15. Excellent biography, one of the best that I've read. I read for the first time last spring. Great stories in there from some of the key participants/relatives of Bessie. Highly recommended.
  16. Anytime I put this album on it brings a smile to my face. The quartet that assembled that day was playing as a unit, something that doesn't/didn't always happen when you put 4 All-Stars together. Simply beautiful from start to finish. Everyone plays their ass off. Solos are first-rate, original compositions are of a similar high quality. One for the ages.
  17. I totally missed this comment the first time around. That kind of explains Woody's decline. It's depressing in a way, but I guess Dexter and Woody were never really "buddies", at least not in a close sense. Therefore it is somewhat "excusable" that Dexter stole Woody's woman, or maybe not...
  18. I've got both that and "Night Music" as well. Prefer "Master". Sound is better on it too IMO. Both were fairly easy and inexpensive to find. Bought both, along with a new copy of "Stepping Stones", sealed a year or so ago through the Amazon shops. Less than $30 for the three I believe. I have STEPPING STONES also. It really burns. Malcolm Addey is the "sound guy" on the MASTER... album. That probably helps to explain things. I'm spinning it for the first time and am really enjoying it. Woody is playing some beautiful fluegelhorn on "Diane" as I type this. Well worth the $5, methinks.
  19. You can download one tune (in mp3 format) from her website, you just have to enter your e-mail address. The tune is called "My Petition" and it's from the new album. Good stuff. Can't wait to getting my own copy of this album.

    Dave Holland

Check out his sideman work w/Braxton; mainly from the 1970's.
  21. Checking out some clips on her website (jillscott.com) right now. Sounds really good to me, and I'm not an expert in this kind of music at all. I think I'll be grabbing this. Thanks for the rec., Jim.
  22. In a few minutes time: Kenny Burrell - ELLINGTON IS FOREVER (just got it today, I've heard it's one of Kenny's best).
  23. Well that just opens an even bigger risk of not giving something that's desired! So .... as long as people send receipts ... maybe. I agree. Maybe the "Santa" could subtly ask the receipiant if he/she has a particular disk. Or the person could always send it back if they already have said disc.
  24. This does sound like a lot of fun. I'd definitely sign up. It might be tough, though, to not get someone something that they already have. Some people have very wide-ranging tastes also, but I guess that would make things easier for the giver of the gift. Keep me posted, Dan. I like the idea.
