    Grant Green

I seem to be able to identify Kenny Burrell's sound/"style" pretty quickly, and without knowing who it is beforehand. But still, there are a bunch of other guitarists who have that Burrell influenced thang going on.
  2. Sorry I missed it yesterday (wasn't near a computer) - happy B-Day, Lon.
  3. Tough to say for sure, but if I were to vote (which I'm not going to do), it would be a close one between Trane and Joe Henderson. I kind of know what you're getting at RT, but a poll like this that excludes Prez is stupefying.
  4. Count me in, too. I don't have a burner myself but could probably get access to one when and if my turn came up.
  5. I've had this set for slightly more than a year and I enjoy it quite a bit. Lately I've been going back to some of the Morgan dates to check out Clifford Jordan's playing. You also get Eddie Higgins on at least one session (perhaps more than one), who's an underrated pianist and who contributes the tune "Expoobident". Initially, I found the SECOND GENESIS quartet date (Shorter) to be my favorite, but all the sessions are of high quality. Definitely worth the $96.
  6. That reminds me of something I believe Freddie Hubbard said in regards to playing with/opposite Lee Morgan. Freddie said he would get up and play a solo that was his best effort, but the crowd would only offer slight acknowledgement. Morgan, meanwhile, would have the audience fired up right from the git go (in his solo), and that was due, I think, to his incredible feel.
  7. My thoughts exactly. I was enjoying the article until he tossed that piece of bullshit in there. Don't get me wrong, I dig Joe's playing as much as the reviewer, but the comparison to Green seemed to be included only because Green also played in an organ trio setting (the reviewer's personal preference shone through when he dissed Grant). Writing off Grant Green as someone who only played "stock licks" and "one note choruses" is ridiculous, not to mention false. Green's playing relies on a lot of subtle nuances and, evidently, this guy is unable to discern them at all.
  8. Not one disc, but I'd have to go for (at the moment) Lester Young THE COMPLETE ALADDIN RECORDINGS, which is a two-cd set. Words are insufficient to describe how much this music means to me, in so many different ways. You simply have to hear and experience it for yourself.
  9. Me too.
  10. Jim, I know nothing on this topic myself but I did check out the website of Canada's home improvement guy, Shell Busey. If you try a search on his site for "tile floors", it should bring up some top-notch info. Here's the link: Shell Busey's homepage Let me know if you find what you're looking for there.
  11. Wow, that's quite the list. The biggest surprise for me is the Andrew Hill disc. I wonder what that version sounds like...
  12. I've heard a lot about that one but have never seen it before. Thanks for posting that!
  13. Man, that's so lame, not to mention depressing.
  14. Ceora - simply a beautiful tune. BTW, does anybody know any other albums that has this tune on it (besides CORNBREAD)?
  15. You are very welcome, sir. I enjoyed writing it. Of course I've considered becoming a record reviewer; it seems like one of the sweetest jobs out there. Maybe I'll check into it after I finish university. Thanks for the compliments and the cash....
  16. BTW, we are talking about the same reunion concert that came out on cd as TOWN HALL CONCERT, right? I'm playing it right now, and it really does kick, especially Herbie's comping on Cantaloupe Island.
  17. Really good observations, Randy. I find, from some of my listening experiences at a local sort-of jazz club, that some younger cats who sit in can really tear up the changes, but not in a good way. Sure, some of what they play is harmonically advanced and all the notes are "correct", but it doesn't really speak to the people (or me, at least), if you catch my drift. It's almost as if there's too much thinking/planning ahead in the solo, it's all there beforehand, hence no interaction with the other members of the group. I know it's sometimes difficult to do if you're just sitting in, but still I don't think it's too much to ask someone to at least LISTEN to what, say, the rhythm section is doing. I know, too, that everybody has to have licks of some sort (what's that thing Pres said to a young pianist, "Bird has his licks, I have my licks, you have your licks"), but still there has to be some kind of "spontaneity", to make the performance/solo stand out. The reason (or one of many reasons really) why I dig Pres so much is his ability to truly create beautiful melodies that the average guy can sing, hum, etc. but they're still musically and emotionally profound and, sometimes, technically difficult.
  18. Indeed, that's what makes an album like Lee Morgan's CANDY, and many others in the trumpet-quartet model, all the more remarkable. Lee definitely blows a lot of trumpet on that session.
  19. Same here. I might even be tempted to finally purchase a DVD player if this did come out in video format (not to say there aren't other DVDs that I'm interested in, this might just make me bite the bullet). Or I'd watch it on the computer.
  20. Nice choice, Ed. I've heard cuts from that disc numerous times, either on the radio or on the continuous music thing on the dish, but never had the urge to pick it up. Plus, I have zero Getz, and ya hafta start somewhere.
  21. That's a hell of a lot better than DB's nowadays. Yowza!
  22. Well, I submitted one. It says it'll take a couple days to be "approved", or something to that effect. My first ever "real" record review. Cool, man. :rsmile:
  23. Great news there, Kevin. I've always wanted to delve into Pearson's stuff, but had never seen any around in stores.
  24. I agree with B-3er; my congrats on even trying the stuff, I certainly wouldn't have.
  25. I'd be inclined to get all three eventually, but I guess, in this case, I'd choose the one that's most likely to go OOP first. So, go for the JJ.
