I experience a similar problem with the funny screen yesterday - the one that Matthew posted - but nothing more since then. I also noticed the same thing as Jim, the slowing down of loading threads, etc.
-
I don't have this album, but will try and find a copy this week at one of the local record shops.
-
The same site has links to numerous other archived interviews. The George Coleman one is especially interesting, IMO (I just finished listening to that one).
-
Another instance of someone saying Art Blakeley. Good interview, though.

I recall earlier this year that Rooster Ties went to see Andrew play and did, in fact, chat with him after the show for about ten minutes or so. I believe he also had his picture taken with Hill. Maybe RT caught him in a good mood, I'm not sure, but ya can't hurt for trying. In short, I don't think he'd mind, Ed, he probably enjoys chatting with fans.

Some stuff I picked up yesterday: Joe Pass: VIRTUOSO (absolutely stunning) Wynton Kelly trio w/ Wes Montgomery: SMOKIN' AT THE HALF NOTE Bud Powell: THE SCENE CHANGES Kenny Burrell: BLUE MUSE

Wow, that's a stroke of luck if I've ever seen one. That damn "handling fee" that Canada Post charges on Mosaic orders (and others) really pisses me off; the shipping charge should deliver the package straight to your door, but no, let's tack on another five bucks just for kicks. Free trade, my ass!

Yes, I read your post. BUT, you ordered them from HMV.com which pretty much guarantees that you'll get them reasonably soon, a few days perhaps. I, on the other hand, am waiting until they are put on store shelves, which may happen next week, two weeks from now, or not at all. Not much of a jazz selection here in Winnipeg, with a couple of exceptions (A&B Sound and a couple smaller used shops).

I haven't heard this disc, yet, but am really looking forward to it. I've got to say however, that it REALLY bugs me when there are two of the same instrument on a date and the liner don't tell who's soloing when. This REALLY, REALLY bugs me. Even if they would say left channel/ right channel it would be enough. I'm really surprised that Cuscuna would let this slip through. For what they're charging for the Conn's, they should give us this information. I was listening to Ike Quebec's Congo Lament Lp the other day and Michael does a great job in giving the solo order and telling when it's Quebec and when it's Turrentine. John - I'm sure someone on this board could supply you with the info, with regard to which trumpeter solos when on each tune. I'd be more than happy to do it (I used to play trumpet, so I have a pretty good ear on distinguishing between musicians), but I'm going to have to wait a while to get the disc, being in Canada and all and having to wait for PASSING SHIPS to hit retail stores.

I agree with what Chuck and Jim said. This session is basically a fun blowing session, with no real complex/interesting/innovative tunes, just nice soloing by the participants. Coleman probably has the best outing as far as the horns are concerned, but Morgan is also good (although some of the licks/solos seem very similar to previous solos on other, earlier albums). Not an album you'd recommend to a Morgan newbie; it doesn't add much to Lee's discography, although it doesn't detract from it either (ie. it's not a complete dud).

Yeah, this one retailer up here has been selling the most recent RVG's for $10.79 CDN, which is a good deal less in American dollars. I've snapped up a handful, perhaps five, from the August and September batches.

This album, along with TIME WAITS are the remaining gaps in my Powell BN collection. I'm sure the latter is also prime stuff. Perhaps I'll make it a double shot of Bud the next time I'm at a local record shop. Thanks for the rec., Shrdlu, AB, etc.

Hey Rooster, no worries man. I live in Canada, you know that frigid place to the north (actually were experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures for this time of year), and our stores probably won't have the new Conns until a week from now, at least. More likely, I won't have the new Andrew Hill and Mobley's THE FLIP until a couple of weeks down the road. So calm down, have a pint of your favorite brew, and just think how lucky you are that you don't live in Canada or, worse yet, Europe.

A recent vinyl pickup was Von's album entitled YOUNG AND FOOLISH. An introduction to his discography for me, and I will definitely be checking out more of his stuff.

I just got this one recently, but haven't given it much listening time. Too many albums, not enough time. This thread gives me a more than valid excuse to check this one out with much attention.

Some very nice titles on the lists; my wallet is going to take a beating next year. At least three possible Dexter sessions, finally BN is getting their act together. From what I've heard from folks about GOIN' WEST, that'll be my first purchase of these new ones. THE SIXTH SENSE kicks ass too (upgrade time)!

Count Basie - America's Number One Band
pryan replied to Brad's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sounds like a good set for a relative Basie newbie like myself. Does it span all of Basie's career or just the earlier stuff? -
Well, hard for me to tell you what to buy, but - I dig BOSSA NOVA BACCHANAL. Not a "five star" disc for me, but highly enjoyable. Rouse does the material justice, he seemed to have delved deeper into the grooves and feel of the music than many who slapped the "bossa" appellation onto whatever they happened to be doing when the craze hit. His rather idiosyncratic approach just seems to jibe well with the rhythms for some reason. To "anchor" this date to what may be a familiar reference point to you, BOSSA NOVA BACCHANAL strikes me as being at least as successful as Ike Quebec's SOUL SAMBA, perhaps more so. Ike's tone was well-suited to that type of music, and I enjoy that one for what it is, but I don't think Quebec was as intrinsically comfortable with (or as genuinely creative within) the genre as Rouse sounds to have been. AND, Kenny Burrell's on guitar. His presence alone makes me want to pick up the disc. However, this one will probably be one of the last of the new Conns that I'll get, simply because I have a larger interest in the other artists (Mobley, Hill, etc).

Well hell, unless you wear socks with sandals, it's almost impossible not to be hipper than I am... Hey, the consumption of Moosehead beer most definitely, IMHO, makes one "hip".

I picked up my Chambers Select at the post office this am. Absolutely a wonderful set, from what I've heard so far (disc 3 and most of disc 2). For those of you on the fence, disc 3 alone is worth the price of the entire set. Said disc has the BASS ON TOP session (which is sublime, BTW) and the two duet cuts with Blakey. Score another winner for Mosaic!

I kind of agree. This guy might've just thought you were a friend or something, and wanted to hit on your girlfriend (ie. he assumed she would have been home alone). I know it's kind of creepy thinking about the situation like that, but there are some sick people out there. Personally, I'd ask the guy for an explanation as to why he showed up at a private residence, unannounced. If he doesn't provide a believable answer, then take your business elsewhere (although it sounds as if you're going to do that anyhow).

While the music may be good, the cover art leaves much to be desired.
