  1. Well, I've seen him twice before and I know he's gonna go through some of the same routines/jokes onstage, but in a way, that's why I'm going to see him again (not to mention the marvellous trumpet and flugelhorn playing). This guy, as most of you know, is a living legend (in every sense) and loves doing what he does. The only thing I'm concerned about is the number of potential empty seats, considering the concert is taking place on a Friday night, in the summer, AND in Winnipeg, a place where a large proportion of the population takes off to their cabins or goes to the beach. Regardless, I know I'm going to have a great time and I hope my buddies and I can possibly meet the man and, hopefully get a picture (I'm not holding my breath, however). I'll report back later and let you guys know how it went.
  2. I'd have to disagree, Jim R. Malone does have monster chops, sure, but his ability to convey heartfelt, "emotional" solos is not lacking at all. I saw him in the duo setting, along with Green about a year and a half ago and they were great together. I wouldn't quite use the word telepathy, but the togetherness/empathy for one another was really on display throughout the entire two sets. A most enjoyable concert; two friends just having fun, making swingin' music.

Hey Late, or anyone, what's his playing like on those Warne Marsh-led sessions for Atlantic. That seems to be a somewhat "different" context than what P.C. normally was used to. I'm gonna have to get that Mosaic (Tristano/Konitz/Marsh) pretty damn soon, there's so much on it that I haven't heard (only have the LEE KONITZ AND WARNE MARSH date).
  4. Same here. How are you liking it so far? I've found that I'm flying through it (relatively speaking). He sure doesn't hold anything back. It's good, though, that the book is sprinkled with interviews with other people who knew Art well, as that seems to give the book some alternate viewpoints (obviously).
  5. Welcome Ron! We haven't "met" but it seems like you'll be a good addition to this online community. Looking forward to reading your contributions.
  6. When I first started listening to jazz it was Miles but now it seems to be Prez (hence the avatar).

I believe the Chambers Select will have all of his BN leader dates, plus some extras. I'll definitely be getting that when it comes out, as I only have WHIMS OF CHAMBERS, as far as his leader dates go. Can't wait to hear BASS ON TOP! Yeah, his arco playing is a bit shaky, especially when you consider the intonation problems. Although his solos are consistently excellent, I'd have to mention his solo on "My Funny Valentine", from the JAZZ AT THE PLAZA disc under Miles' leadership, as a particular highlight. It's so beautiful in its virtuosity, yet the many note phrases still fit within the ballad structure, if that makes any sense.
  8. Thanks, Trumpet Guy, that's what I thought but I didn't know for sure. Have you heard Hargrove's version of "Nostalgia" on his FAMILY album; Wynton's plays on it too, and it's pretty nice (although I'm not a huge Wynton fan).
  9. I just finished reading "But Beautiful". I was mightily impressed by Geoff Dyer's writing; he can convey some pretty deep stuff, but it's not really that tough to follow/understand. Great poetic use of metaphores and similies, as well. Today I took out Art Pepper's autobiography from one of the local libraries, as Dyer's chapter on Pepper intrigued me a lot. Also, I've totally ignored Pepper's musical output, but will soon acquire his SATURDAY AT THE VANGUARD album.
  10. So, Lon, what's another good place to pick up the Classics titles at a good price?
  11. That's just astounding. You think you've heard some crazy stories and then even crazier ones pop up, seemingly every second day. Sometimes the offender and/or the crime can be seen as a portrayal of something else that's wrong in society, but this is taking it to the extreme. Last time I checked it wasn't mandatory to consume alcohol at sporting events.
  12. Hmmm, makes sense. Why didn't I think of that? Yep, I'm a moron sometimes.
  13. OK, I tried a search just now in the "Jazz" section and found that they have 1 Count Basie title, 0 Lester Young discs, and 2 Miles Davis cds. Maybe I'm searching wrong, but, if not, that selection is pretty brutal.
  14. Another good one, IMHO, with Elvin and Larry on board (and Hank Mobley), is I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND. Sure, some might want to write it off because of the more pop-oriented title track, but there's some damn fine playing by all of the musicians. They do a version of "Stella by Starlight" also, which is one of my favorite tunes.
  15. Our family has lived in a condominium complex for the past 21 or so years. Another family lives directly behind us and could probably be described as disfuntional (actually that's too lenient; fucked up is perhaps a better, "blunter" description). The daughter is probably the most "with it", although she still has some problems. She had a baby and eventually moved out west with her boyfriend. Eventually he left her, and now she's back at home, taking care of the baby. The mother (divorced some years ago) is probably in her fifties and has two grown children, both currently living at home. She is mentally unstable, and over the past few years has almost become anorexic. A couple of years back I happened to be looking out our back window and noticed her get into her car, but instead of putting the vehicle into reverse, she put it in drive and proceeded to ram into the fence, knocking it over. She got out, took a look at the damage and went on her way. Funny thing was, she tried to make the Condo pay for the broken fence, when it was absolutely her fault in the first place. The son, most likely the weirdest of the three, works at some kind of food packaging plant and has brutal hours. My dad actually taught him in high school and said he was very aloof and quiet. He rarely says anything to me, and I, in turn, don't attempt any small talk with him. He rarely gets out, I've rarely seen him around friends, and he smokes like a fiend and eats copious junk food. He had a car but never bothered to maintain it; his idea of maintenance was to fill it up with gas. The car eventually died and he left it sitting in the driveway for about three months before finally getting someone to tow it away.

I don't think Mr. P.C. has been discussed all that much, on this board at least. Count me in as a huge fan. Such a tasteful player, beautiful support of Miles' band for so many years, amazing soloist (bowed and plucked). I think his "peak" years were from about '58-'61, when he recorded a bunch with Miles and also had numerous sideman dates, in addition to leading a couple of dates on VeeJay (must get that Kelly/Chambers Mosaic sometime). SOUL STATION really stands out as a particularly superlative sideman appearance from this period. Listening to the Blackhawk recordings is shocking in that you can literally "hear" Chambers become increasingly drunk as the night goes on, in that he gets further and further behind the beat. How bad was P.C.'s drinking problem? But back to the music, does anyone have any good recs for later period Chambers, or does his playing decline precipitously? Any info/comments on Paul Chambers are welcome on this thread (duh!).
  17. That's how I read it. Seems a hell of a lot easier to do it that way. I can't wait for the first one!
  18. Sounds like a good plan, Dan. I should be able to do subsequent burns (ie. of burns already sent/made) far easier than, say, making my own CDR (although I could probably do that too). Rooster, I think any material, obscure or not, should be included on your CDR, when and if you make one. I think if the musicians are somewhat "well-known", than more obscure stuff is better. For instance if you put on a cut from MOTHER SHIP (which I know is one of your favorites), I'd probably know Lee was the trumpet player, but deciphering the rest of the musicians might be more of a challenge. Although not if I buy it when it comes out as a Conn beforehand.

    Grant Green

I'd add Woody Shaw to the list of "easily" identifiable trumpeters (for me, at least).
  20. GREEN STREET is a mighty fine album, that's for sure. I find that I dig Grant's playing on standards a lot, moreso that "original" material. Love those versions of "Round Midnight" and "Alone Together". So for me, I guess the COMPLETE QUARTETS WITH SONNY CLARK is my "favorite" Green, at least of what I've heard. That STANDARDS album is high on my list of stuff to get.
  21. As usual, thanks for the comments guys. I read that review by Scott Yanow but, as with all of his reviews (and those of AMG in general), I took it with a rather large chunk of salt. I guess I'll add this one to the ever-growing list of Mosaics to buy.
  22. Miles: BIRTH OF THE COOL, MY FUNNY VALENTINE, SATURDAY AT THE BLACKHAWK (disc 2) currently- Bix: REAL JAZZ ME BLUES (disc 1) later on- Jackie McLean: JACKNIFE Lester Young: LE DERNIER MESSAGE...
  23. The past six months or so I've really gotten into Teddy's stuff, be it with Billie or Lester. The Mosaic set looks right up my alley, but five discs of trio tracks almost seems like it could be too much. But then again, can you ever really get too much perfection? So, for those who have it, your comments please. Thanks in advance.
  24. I know this may seem like a ludricous comment, but I'll mention it anyway: perhaps the thing on Lee's head isn't a bandage at all, maybe it's a headband or other piece of headgear. Just thought I'd throw that out there. If the white band is indeed a bandage, then maybe the wound(s) happened in a conflict with a drug dealer (pure speculation on my part, but it's definitely possible).
  25. Does "Nostalgia" count? I really dig that tune a lot. I know the basic changes aren't Dameron's, and also Fats Navarro was a contributor to the melody (?). I think it's explained in the Fats Proper box, but a friend is borrowing it at the moment. So is this a Dameron tune, Dameron-Navarro, or Navarro?
