Is it a wind instrument? If so, I'll guess alto sax. If not, I'll say bass.

Man, what a line-up of re-issues. I don't think anyone can complain about this batch: unreleased Andrew Hill, previously hard-to-find Lee Morgan, a Sam Rivers date, some rare Hank Mobley, and more! I'm seriously thinking about getting all of them (eventually) except the Rivers, which I have on the Mosaic set. Unfortunately I'll have to wait slightly longer (being in Canada), but dangnabbit, it'll be worth it!

Just curious, but do you guys in the States have the Mach 3 Turbo, or just the Mach 3? I know, initially, in Canada that we had the Mach 3, but not long thereafter (possibly 6 months to a year), Gillete came out with the "Turbo" edition.

I remember back in high school our jazz orchestra played an Ellis tune, entitled "Final Analysis". A very cool, trippy chart that was quite a crowd pleaser when we played it at a festival in the States.

I must say the cover to THE FLIP is pretty hip. :rsmile:

The Twins played a great game yesterday. Clutch hits, good baserunning, stellar fielding (both Guzman and Stewart had awesome catches), and marvellous pitching coupled with a few Yankee gaffes = Twins 3, Yanks 1. Go Twins!

Electric. BUT, I've heard so many good things (here and elsewhere) about the Mach 3 (Turbo) that I might have to switch over sometime soon.

The Vikes just manhandled the 49ers. So the question is this: how important is Daunte Culpepper? Assuredly not as important as Moss, who had 2 TDs (what an athlete).

How funny that you should ask! I just put on disc 3 to listen to the Bass On Top session again well as I don't think it garnered my full attention last time (and it wont this time either...lots to do around the house today). But thats not to say I am not enjoying it. It usually takes me a few weeks to fully digest ONE disk, so now I have to digest 3. In that respects, what I have listened to so far has been great to say the least. One dosen't really get a chance to listen to PC fully placed in the front of the mix, so I am not sure if thats just the Mastering or if he was just recorded that way. It is a good thing to not hear him fully in support, but to hear OTHERS supporting him, which is a nice little balance. Of course PC has surrounded himself with the best sidemen on these sides. As well he should be. For me, PC is the TOP...he's the Bass on Top! Thanks for the comments. That BASS ON TOP session is one I've been salivating over for a few years now; I'm so excited to hear it for the first time!

Paul Chambers-Wynton Kelly
pryan replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
If you want a sample of what's in the box, go for SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME. It doesn't have any alternates and the trio absolutely burns. Lee and Wayne also play on one tune. -
A "belated" happy birthday to one of the most important pianists in the history of improvised music. Such a master he was. I like the quote of Bud in the vol. 1 (BN) liner notes saying how pianists would be playing like he did on those sessions ten years in the future. He was wrong, but only in his severe under-estimation. What a genius.

I first heard him on one of my Dad's "best of" Lps, and was totally amazed, at both the technical mastery and the emotional element in his playing. The only disc I have of him is one of the Jazz in Paris discs, which also has a clarinet player. I actually kind of forgot that there was a Django Mosaic; add another one to the list, I'm sure it's a beautiful set.

So Jazzdog, what's the word on the Chambers set?

Paul Chambers-Wynton Kelly

I've recently been spinning the Collectables cd of the SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME album, and I must say I really dig it. Masterful playing from Miles' rhythm section, all three members were in top form on this session. As my avatar indicates, I'm a big Chambers fan (can't wait for the Select set to arrive), and this set is sure to have some of his finest playing/composing on it. I know some are turned off by the multiple alternate takes on this set, but that factor doesn't influence my purchases. This is on my Mosaic wish list; I'm sure you wouldn't regret the purchase, Bev. Go for it! -
The past year or so my purchases have increased substantially. That said, I still don't consider myself a collecter. "Collecting", I think refers to people who are into sports cards (which I once was), in that the product itself doesn't really get much "use"; I mean, how often/long can look at a baseball card? I buy the music (cds, lps, etc) for the music, foremost, and also to learn (through reading the liners) about the music and the musicians.

Good to see that it's being shipped, even if it was received in a brusque manner. Please post your thoughts on the set, Jazzdog.

I voted MONK'S DREAM. My dad has a copy of it on vinyl and it's pretty scratchy; I may pick up the newly remastered version, as I believe it also includes some alternates. A great date, BTW.
-
By "these", are you referring to the Selects, the Mulligan set, or all of the above. I kind of think you mean the Selects, but maybe not. That would be more like a "mid-October" shipping date, as opposed to "late-September". Hopefully it's the latter!
-
Apparently I'm a lost cause - I scored a 1. BTW, the "last book I read" category did not have sufficient answers; but that's neither here nor there as the test was kinda stupid anyhow.
-
I've heard the Mosaic (Bix/Tram/Tea) is supposed to have excellent sound quality. I don't have the set myself, but maybe others will chime in with their thoughts.
-
Sorry Dr. J., I didn't get a chance to find a copy of this before this week. However, I really dig the albums that I have where Dickenson appears as a sideman, namely some of Prez' Aladdin sides and the JAZZ GIANTS '56 Lp. Vic could really play any kind of tune: ballads, up-tempo, etc., and sound right at home, cooking on his trombone.
-
Yeah, I thought that too. It looks like he's hanging on to that other guy, and that he's kind of swaying on his feet; that, plus his eyes look slightly glazed...
-
I'll be getting the Paul Chambers MS as a birthday gift from my folks. Does anyone know the exact date that the Selects are expected to ship? BTW, I wonder how many other about-to-be 21 year olds are anticipating this box set as much as I am.... B)

So Dan, when will the answers be revealed?
