Not true, Brad. True Blue no doubt has a policy similar to the one CDNOW (or what is now Amazon) has. I thought I'd try to "trick" them (CDNOW) into selling me a Plugged Nickel box for $11.99 (which was the listed price, by the way); everything went through fine with the ordering part on the website, but after they realized their gaffe, they sent me an e-mail with a bunch of fine-print jargon saying how they reserved the right to cancel an order such as mine, even though, technically, it was their mistake. Sadly, I still don't have that set, just the "Highlights" one-cd sampler.

I e-mailed Mosaic this morning to inquire about the set, its size, when it's coming out, etc. Here's the reply I received, in less than an hour(!): 'This will be a 7 CD set that will be released at the end of May. It will be put up on the website under Upcoming Releases next week.'

Peter, this article has already been posted. For more on Jutta's death see this thread
-
Daniel - Basically he made a joke (albeit a sick one) that, because Jutta was donating her body to be used for research purposes (I think), the scientists could look into how a body such as hers was so unable to swing. Please, anybody correct me if I'm wrong. BTW, on the subject of DEEP, I agree with the poster who said there is some profound thoughts/ideas in his comments once you get beyond the initial shock of his bluntness. Still, I find myself checking in here more often.

Here's the website: Proper Records I bought the one Proper set I have (Fats Navarro) at a Canadian retailer, A&B Sound, for a fairly cheap price - something like 40 bucks Cdn, with a 20% discount. I can't comment on any of the US online places, but the Proper site does seem to have quite reasonable prices.

Your print media jazz coverage
pryan replied to kenny weir's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Here's a CD review from today's Free Press that illustrates what I was talking about in the above post. The review is written by Chris Smith: This review might not seem particularly monotonous, but if you read them week after week, it's as if they're all just variations on a theme; they all start to sound the same after a really short while. No real detail, just a superficial take on the album. -
Your print media jazz coverage
pryan replied to kenny weir's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
In Winnipeg, at least in the mainstream paper that I normally read, it's pretty weak. Basically one jazz article per week (on Monday), that normally includes info on upcoming concerts/club dates or maybe a feature of a musician; sometimes there's an extra article on Monday, or another day for a concert review. Also, on Saturdays there's probably one jazz disc reviewed, although it is only about a paragraph in length. The thing I dislike most, however, is how most articles/reviews have merely generic terms (eg. swinging, great, good, etc) in describing the music. It's as if the writer in question has only a limited grasp of musical terminolgy (not that that should necessarily make the articles or reviews of lesser quality) or if he is well versed in the area, the editors want him to tone it down so the average Joe can read the thing easily. I suspect the former and the articles, in his case, do suffer because they are predictable in their wording and content (or lack there of). -
I'm surprised no one's voted for Clarence (C#) Sharpe.

Album of the week: Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing
pryan replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
I don't think you'll "hurt anyone" in being honest with regards to your opinion of a certain album. Although, what's the saying, "sometimes the truth hurts". And another, "if you don't have anything good to say about someone, don't say anything at all". But, seriously, if you've got something to say that's a constructively negative criticism, I think there's nothing at all wrong with voicing your opinion of dissent. After all, we're not going to all like the same thing, if we did the world would be a pretty damn boring place. -

Or, you could speak your mind and say why you don't like the album in question. That would be far more interesting and would stimulate further opinions and conversation. -
Don't forget some of his sideman appearances of the early sixties with Lee Morgan (on Vee-Jay, HERE'S LEE MORGAN and EXBOOPEDIENT) and J.J. Johnson (on Columbia, J.J. INC.). BTW, I really dig his tune 'Lost and Found', which appears on EXBOOPEDIENT as well as Blakey's THE WITCH DOCTOR; probably is done on other albums as well.

Soony Stitt, eh, I've heard he's a pretty decent saxophonist.

I got to see Shank about a year ago along with Pete Christlieb on tenor; one of the finer concerts I've been to. I think Joe Lababera was on drums with a couple of local musicians on bass and piano, Gilles Fournier and Ron Paley, respectively. I had never heard of Christlieb before, but man I really dug his playing. After doing a little research, I found out that Warne Marsh was somewhat a mentor of his (Christlieb), hmmm, that would explain things. Do you know who Shank is playing with, ss1?

I just tried connecting and experienced similar difficulties.

Just pulled this disc out for another listen. Very nice date; I agree w/ Jim re: "Dear Sir", such a beautiful tune. Al, it's actually Billy Higgins on drums.
-
He appears on Roy Hargrove's TENORS OF OUR TIME album but only on two tracks: "Serenity" and "Shade of Jade".

Did the show go ahead yesterday? I tuned in on Monday and was disappointed that the war coverage was on instead. If the show didn't happen, will there be a rescheduling? Thanks.

John Patton Mosaic Select: What's in, What's Out?
pryan replied to Matthew's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Brad, it wasn't a case of choosing one over the other (ie. which one's "better") but I didn't have any Lou (as a leader) in my collection. Plus, it was about five bucks cheaper than the Stitt. But, don't get me wrong, I'm very much a Stitt fan as well. Was listening to his "LIVE" AT THE LEFT BANK just last night, man does that one just abosolutely burn, or what? -
John Patton Mosaic Select: What's in, What's Out?
pryan replied to Matthew's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Picked up THE NATURAL SOUL today, and after the first spin I can definitely say a large grin crossed my face many times while listening. It's also an introduction of sorts for me to Big John, very nice playing. What a lineup too! Thanks for hippin' me to this one, chaps. :rsmile: -
Ditto, although I don't have much Booker (just STRUCTURALLY SOUND and Mingus' AH UM), what i do have I enjoy immensely. His sound is just so BIG and his playing so exubrant, it's hard not to like him. BTW, I seem to have unconsciously first heard Booker when I heard his solo, or at least the opening bars, from "Better Git In Your Soul" (the AH UM version) on a commercial of some kind (maybe) where they just cut out those first few licks. Hearing it on AH UM for the first time, I definitely knew I had heard it somewhere before. Any ideas?
-
Sounds good, I will be looking forward to hearing it. Make sure to Spam us when it's about to be released.

Thanks for the info. One more question, will there be unreleased tunes or extra material that wasn't on the Lp?
