Since I have the older re-issue of this album I didn't realize that Alphonso Johnson plays on the album (due to both a superficial knowledge of the differences between Alphonso and Jaco's playing, as well as there being no liner notes whatsoever, or even a notation of the musicians who play on the album; the only thing besides the cover image is a picture of the group behind a massive amount of food). Could someone tell me which bassist plays on each tune?

There's a great version on the Jazz Messengers disc MEET YOU AT THE JAZZ CORNER..., with Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter up front. Kind of a strange cadenza by Morgan, where, in the middle of it, Blakey tells him to "Play your instrument!"

I agree with Lon. It's not like those folks who frequented the BNBB have suddenly stopped talking about Mosaics; indeed, many of them have landed here or on other jazz bulletin boards and are still discussing the new releases as well as the older sets. Also (as has been pointed out before), Mosaic has many customers who don't participate in online discussion forums and who rely solely on the catalogs or the website to hear about the upcoming releases.

Whoops, I figured since it was already on your bookshelf that you were re-reading it. Yes, Lon, any thoughts on the book (as a preview/review) would be welcome.

I just put a hold on this book from the public library. What's it like, ghost?

I just gave this one a listen while preparing the dinner and I must say I dug it a lot more this time around. But I won't say anything more 'cuz it's not 'officially' the begining of the allotted time period for this AOTW. Definitely looking forward to some closer listenings.....

Album of the Week - what do people already have???
pryan replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
I just voted for LIFT EVERY VOICE. I think it's a very interesting album concept and would like to hear other people's thoughts on this one. There was a topic on the 'other' board about this album and the opinions were quite varied, to say the least. Plus, this one had the least votes, so I thought I'd further complicate the decision-making for Rooster. -
I think you're right ghost, in the 'early' days of this board it probably attracted many ex-BNBBers, at least to lurk for a while, hence the high rate of 'traffic' on March 6, just after the BNBB closed down. After the other board officially was inaccessible, in terms of reading old threads etc, probably many people went to AAJ, others to Jazz Corner, others here, and some a combination of these three. Now things have kind of settled down a bit.

Album of the Week - what do people already have???

Thanks for the info, RT. I'll probably end up buying this (the 2-CD set) but not right away 'cuz I've got a bunch of other stuff to listen to first. Still a couple more weeks until this one is discussed anyway, assuming it's the one you're going to choose. -

I also don't have it, although I didn't make that explicitly known in my above post. I might pick it up on CD, although I have seen an Lp version for much cheaper. However, it's obvious the 2-CD set will have far more tracks. For anyone who has both (or just the CD version), does it say how many additional tracks are on it (the recently released set), in comparison to the original? -
I tried to post this one before but someone posted another name at the exact same time, and I had to edit and choose a different one. So, here's another attempt: Lester Young.

Wow, that's interesting Al. My feelings on JACKNIFE are probably the exact opposite from yours. I think Jackie absolutely burns on this date, and plays some of the most fiery solos I've ever heard from him. I'll save the rest of my comments for later, if this album is chosen. I still haven't decided which one I'm going to vote for, I have most of them. But I guess if I had to narrow it to three I'd go with LIFT EVERY VOICE, JACKNIFE, and THE PRISONER. Too hard to choose, although I haven't given THE PRISONER enough time, so maybe I should vote for that, as it would give me a good reason to re-visit it (just like BLACK MARKET, that was mentioned in another thread as being an upcoming AOTW). -
Ditto. Picked this one up a while ago (maybe two years, I'm not sure), listened to it a few times but didn't find it particularly memorable. My perception of BLACK MARKET will probably change, though. A good choice for AOTW, Joe!

Just put my order/money order in the mailbox a couple of hours ago. I probably won't get it for a while but I will report back when I do. I'm really looking forward to hearing it; the sound clips have intrigued me a lot.

The above list of RVG's seems to have at least one error (I think). I'm pretty sure PECKIN' TIME has not been issued as a domestic RVG. Now, it could have been released in the JRVG series, but I'm not too sure what has been put out in Japan. Although I seem to recall there being a list somewhere re: JRVG's on these boards.

I have one of those too, but before that high-tech gadget came out I had to make due with an Atari 2600 (which I still have but haven't played in a while). BTW, there were some stellar games for the ol' Atari, like JUNGLE HUNT, KEYSTONE KAPERS, PETE ROSE BASEBALL, KUNG FU, etc. Does anyone else have/use to have one of these babies?

Just finished reading Lewis Porter's short, but extremely informative and enlightening book, LESTER YOUNG. As many of you probably know, there are transcriptions of Pres' solos (both complete and snippets of smaller motifs, phrases, etc) that really add to an understanding of his utter genius. The main theme consists of showing how Young's music changed, not necessarily declined. There's a short biography at the start, but the main focus of the book is on the music itself. I learned a lot about Pres' playing and how he constructs solos, which I probably never would have, without reading this book. Now time to get more of his recordings!

whatever happened to Hardbop's NYC reviews?
pryan replied to Soul Stream's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I think I've seen a couple on the AAJ boards. -
Terry makes a gross error at the start of that review clip when she mentions that Carmell, after returning to the US, died in 1966.

I dig it, gives the place kind of an "icy" vibe to it. Very cool.

Mnytime - I'm not going to deny the fact that Wilt was a mofo, but wouldn't you say at least part of the reason he racked up such gaudy stats was because the centers back in the 60s and 70s aren't even close to being as consistently good as those from, say, the 90s. OK, there was Bill Russell, but really who else could really compare to Hakeem, Shaq, David Robinson, 'Zo, and Mutumbo in terms of defensive ability in blocking shots, altering shots, etc. It's hard to really compare eras, though, but I think if Wilt played during the 90s, it would be hard to believe he could put up the same kind of numbers.

Nominations for future "albums of the week"
pryan replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Album Of The Week
Yes sir, I've been getting into Pres in a big way these past eight months or so (just got A MUSICAL ROMANCE compilation w/ Lady Day today). I'd definitely be contributing if some of these albums came up for discussion.
