  1. Finally some comments, thanks Joe M. That's nice for Roy, 5600 sold is pretty good going. I wonder if this is drawing some pop/hiphop/rap listeners into the fray that normally wouldn't even browse the jazz section. Maybe that's why I'm not finding it: perhaps it's not even IN the jazz sections of stores. I doubt that, though, since all of the other Hargrove discs would be in the jazz section. Personally, I believe Roy when he says that he's wanted to do this sort of project for a long time. Doesn't make 'sense' (cents?) to stay in a hard bop rut forever, although Hardbop Heaney would sure like him to.
  2. I'm pretty sure they still make Ex. If you like Molson beer AND dry beers, you might want to check out Molson Dry; it has a slightly higher alcohol content too (5.5% in Canada) and it tastes pretty good.
  3. Thanks Chris and J.A.W. Chris, I figured you would know what was on the aforementioned set because I read on AMG that you wrote the liner notes. Probably just another AMG gaffe. I'll be on the lookout at the major stores this week for the book.
  4. I plan on purchasing this also, although I don't buy books that often (outside of school purchases, that is). The last book I bought (non-University related) was the James Gavin bio on Chet Baker, back in the late summer of last year. Any idea of when this might be released in Canadian stores, Chris? I checked the Chapter's/Indigo site and they have it for pre-order; they say it will be published in June. BTW, I'll admit I'm totally unfamiliar with Bessie's music. Is the Columbia 2-CD set a good place (released in '97, I believe) for a 'newbie' to start?
  5. Indeed!
  6. I know there was a thread about beer on the BNBB, but since those archives are impossible to access (except for those people who have saved certain topics), I figured I'd start one here. Let the world know what your preferred brew is. Personally I'd have to side with JazzMoose, who is a fan of Moosehead beer. I bought a twelve a couple of weeks ago, after not drinking Moose for a while, and lets just say it disappeared quickly. I didn't realize how much I liked it. Moosehead is a fine golden colored lager, brewed in the province of New Brunswick (which is on the East coast of Canada).
  7. Hey catesta, do you have the one with the guy (or maybe two guys) chugging a beer? I always found that one kinda hypnotic.
  8. I haven't had an avatar since signing up here more than two months ago, but just added one today, of my own choosing. I finally got around to figuring out how to do it. It's the cover of Andrew Hill's BLACK FIRE, an album I haven't heard before (well, just the title track on the BN comp., THE AVANT GUARD YEARS), but will soon; thanks Late!
  9. Only you will find out (and others once they reach the 1000 post plateau). My guess for what comes after "Supa Groover" would be "Supa, Dupa Groover"; very lame, I know.
  10. ... Or his PM's.
  11. I agree completely with Joe. It just a concept that I don't get whatsoever. You'd think he would be trying out some new things, musically, but Arturo's basically transcribing (which isn't easy, I'll give him that much) and playing note for note stuff that's been on tape for decades. I can see a tribute album of some sort, but, again, this idea totally doesn't float my boat, one bit.
  12. Man, how could I miss that (now) evident editing. Kinda subconsciously wondered (during the first listening) about that applause showing up twice in the 'opening' 16 bars and then again in the last eight. This brings a whole new meaning to the AABA form: the "A's" are, essentially, identical in this case. I wonder why the record company would even bother making such a glaringly noticeable patch-up job. You're right though, Jim, it's nice to hear the bridge section.
  13. I can't say I check E-Bay that much, probably due to the fact that I don't have a credit card. I didn't realize that this disc was selling like hot cakes over there. There's one up over there right now, but the bidding is only at $6.99, with a few hours to go. I say, buy my copy and save a couple bucks Seriously, though Moose (or anyone if they're regular e-bayers), how much, on average has the defective disc been fetching? Not that I'm going to jack my price up accordingly, I'm just curious. I'd rather introduce someone to Moncur's music, and here is the easiest place to list something (for me, at least).
  14. Good choice indeed, I look forward to hearing this for the first time. The scene Catesta describes in always 'walking by' the album applies to me as well, except that he has the album now, while I've yet to pick it up. That'll change soon. The lineup sounds similar to the one on the Duke-Louis album (except for the pianist, of course) and that's a very good thing!
  15. I remember watching an episode of The Simpsons where Bart and Milhouse, I think, become pop stars, and there were some hints of this kind of manipulation or interpretation that goes on in the music, in order to produce 'hits' and/or 'stars'. It might've been poking fun moreso at the producers' and engineers' control over the finished product but it also captured what 'kind' of tune may or probably will become popular.
  16. Coindentally, I'm going out for dinner tonight (for my Dad's birthday) to one of Winnipeg's finer steak joints, Rae & Jerry's. I like their steaks but enjoy their BBQ ribs even more, which is what I'll order in a few hours. My Dad was big on charcoal too, and stayed with it for a long time before finally buying a gas BBQ. It would be interesting to do a taste test; I'm betting I'd like the charcoal variety better, at least for steaks. BTW, I've had a number of favorable reviews on my BBQing of steaks, however, that's the only thing I can really BBQ.
  17. BTW, doncha love how Jamal pokes fun at jazz fans, publications, and club owners, while giving props to his fellow Pitt. musicians and plugging his own club, all on the same album jacket? B)
  18. Just listened to the Lp ALL OF YOU last night, for the first time in a while. Just a great tight-sounding trio, but with a style and sound that's all its own. You're right Lon, Jamal is a MF. Here's hoping this does somehow come out as a Mosaic or some other box collection. By the way, here's the liners of the aforementioned album, penned by Jamal himself:
  19. I thought the Blackhawk material was supposed to come out last Tuesday, and much to my chagrin, it was not in stores. Now, June 3, looks like the so-called release date.

  21. I have a copy for sale; sent you a PM.
  22. I was looking forward to the show too, and was kinda disappointed with the result. The preview clips they showed seemed much better, although it's one thing watching a short clip and entirely different thing watching an entire show done in clay-mation that's normally not done that way. That said, I'll still watch the show on a semi-regular basis (I concur with Soul Stream, it's the best late-night show out there), and kudos for at least trying something new even if the results weren't that great, IMHO. BTW, they showed some of the outtakes/bloopers at the end (although I had already given up by that time), and later re-broadcast them, due to popular demand. I found the bloopers to be a hell of a lot funnier than the actual show.
  23. pryan

    HA!

I dig it. Good point re: the bass and drums, they do really seem to hook up and 'gel' for the entire length of the tune.
  24. Picked this one up a short while ago, and I just love it. Beautiful playing by all involved. Some great notes by Dan Morgenstern, as well, who was present at one (or perhaps both?) of the sessions. Highly recommended!
