  1. Some color pics: (sorry for the large format)
  2. The French Canadian group "Normand Gilbeault Ensemble" Played @ the opera house in Tel Aviv this Friday. It was a terrific concert. It's difficult to play Mingus tunes. One can very easily wind out a copy-cat or just going thru the motion of playing Mingus rather than PLAYING Mingus. Normand Gilbeault's group manage to do that. They caught the spirit of Mingus, the aggressiveness and tenderness in Mingus' music and that "organized Chaos" thing that Mingus was doing. Besides listening to the group's latest CD, Mingus Erectus", this was my first encounter with the musicians, and I was impressed, especially with the Sax and flute player Jean Derome. The clarinetist Mathieu Belanger was very good as well, especially on the Bass Clarinet. Anyone heard these guys? Lineup: Ivanhoe Jolicoeur (tp, cor); Mathieu Belanger (cl, b-cl); Jean Derome (as, bs, fl); Normand Gilbeault (b); Claude Levargne (d) Here are some pics I took during the sound check and the concert itself: ***edit to correct spelling***
  3. Plus, Lots of Count Basie New Testament live albums around, especially with those Live Roulette and Live Verve Mosaic sets. That must've been a GREAT band to see live!
  4. Pepper Adams! Pepper Adams!! Pepper Adams!!!
  5. Billy Harper Billy Harper Billy Harper
  6. have a wonderful day, Rachel!
  7. Whata great thread! Great pics too!
  8. These are GREAT news! I caught the same 5tet exactly a week after the recording. It was in a back room of Sangha Cafe, a new age shop in Takoma Park MD. A Kurzweil keyboards, basic drum set, folding chairs, Free Tibet posters on the walls... you get the picture... but the music was divine. I believe John L was in that show as well. It was a great night. Frank Loewe was a bit shaky at times but he preached the absolute truth. The 5tet played 2 sets: 1st set: 1. Silent Observation 2. Dark Silhouette 3. Nothing but Love 4. In the Full of the Lord 2nd set: 1. Jupiter's Future 2. Bien Hoa Blues 3. Moments for the Kiamia 4. Know Your Enemy It was a great night. RIP mr. Loewe
  9. He wasn't king for 70 years -- that's a mistake in the article. (The Romans weren't ruling Judea in 74 BC either.) Herod was born in 74 BC. I believe his reign lasted 30 years
  10. More likely with his Rhodes.
  11. Wasn't he dead for 4 years when Jesus was born?
  12. Happy Birthday, Joe! Have a great day and year!!
  13. Have a great year, Mark
  14. I'm so sad. MR. Hill was an ispiration to many, including myself. We're so fortunate to have his music with us forever. RIP
  15. Oh goody, a death toll throwdown. Around 30,000 people a year die in the U.S. by gunshot. 40,000 a year die in car wrecks, lets ban all cars! There is a slight difference, Beri: The sole purpose of guns is to kill. Death toll by cars is side effect of their primary use. In any case, if I'm not mistaken, it's easier to get a gun's license than a driver's license in many places in the States. At least have the people who want to bear arms take a practical test as well as a theory test and force then to take some physical and mental exams.
  16. Ron Carter is another great musician I think shines as a sideman but lacks as a leader.
  17. PC was a monster, but he isn't my favorite (Wilbur Ware amyone?). I prefer him as a sideman rather than a leader and I really dislike his arco work.
  18. Have a great Bday Erik the Agg!
  19. Horrible, horrible news. My condolences to the families I agree. Politicizing this event is pointless and rather tasteless. If people want to make this massacre a part of their political agenda, I'd advise them to at least wait until the dead are buried.
  20. One of my favorite clarinet players RIP, mr. Scott, your music is immortal.
