Yes, it's archived on the Emusic.com server, as MP3 files In order to archive the music properly, they would have to make high resolution transfers (96/24 PCM or higher), and this takes some time. The CD masters from the late 80's, early 90's are too limited. How do you know they haven't made high-res transfers?

I'm just going to throw this reel away. A fellow 100-16 owner told me that 499 is the way to go; it's a bit thinner than 456 and the machine seems to like it. God only knows how old this reel of 456 is.

WOOT! I got the machine to rewind and forward consistently. The tape that came with it (Ampex 456) is really old and shedding like crazy, so that will go in the garbage. From what I've been told, this machine likes 499, which is $299 a reel new. I'll probably try the BASF/Emtec equivalent, which is a bit cheaper (I think). Now to get a good reel of tape, bias this bad boy, and see (or hear rather) if the heads are decent enough to use.

Is there any chance that they have transfered, to high-resolution digital files, those tapes that they deem will make them money and are simply storing them safely for the future? If everything has been transferred into hi-res digital, then there is no reason to keep the master tapes around the studio. Store them safely and if they need another transfer, then they can recall those tapes.
