  1. I think Henneman uses diminished scales a lot. I remember lots of tritones in the riffs, a la Black Sabbath. Without hearing what the reveiwer was listening to, I'd say that Spoontaneous has it right.
  2. That one is deep.
  3. Guys, read this post down to the bottom. Skipping from this thread to that one gave me a scare!
  4. I can't figure out what's going on in that Angel cover. Are they saviours, or are they being burned at the stake?
  5. Yeah, the charts I want to see are from CITG anyway... I just saw on the website that they are going to put out "play-along" versions of some of the tunes- remixes with the soloist taken out. So I can take my fantasy of one day superceding Ben Monder one step further.
  6. Nice post, Frank. There are a couple of scores that I want to get copies of. I'll get around to that one day.
  7. Yes indeed. Also this statement from Tommy Shaw, in describing his frustration with the direction the band was taking with Kilroy: "Styx used to be about going to the concert, buying a t-shirt.... 'STYX!!!! WOOOO!!!!'...... What happened to that?" An interesting thing is how closely the Styx BTM parallels the Journey episode. Right down to the fact that both of the control-freak singers came down with mysterious ailments on the eve of the comeback tour, and were replaced with sound-alikes by the bands...
  8. I like Concert in the Garden more and more, and also enjoy Allegresse, which I picked soon afterwards. This will probaby be my next purchase of hers.
  9. Two for Anner - noted. What about the solo violin suites?
  10. Aww... thanks Rachel! I'm all warm and fuzzie!
  11. Hell, I didn't even know this was on! I'm happy for Maria Schneider...
  12. I've been meaning to get the Casals. Nice to see the good reviews here. Not the complete set, but Edgar Meyer did Suites 1, 2, & 5 on double bass for Sony. I like it.
  13. Cool! Have fun guys!
  14. Not if you like it! I never worry about fat content with the good stuff. Everything in moderation, and all that.
  15. I saw him once, at the Detroit Jazz festival, a few years ago. He played a short but good set in front of a very vocal audience. People would yell out in between songs, and he'd say something like, "I know, I know - Walk on the goddam Wild Side!" At one point he noticed the huge tv screen positioned at the top of the seating area, situated there for people walking by on the ground level. He got this look of wonder in his eyes, pointed at the screen, which was showing a closeup of his face, and said, "Look at that! That's me! Jimmy Smith!" Even though he wasn't that strong, playing short solos (Phil Upchurch played well that night), it was still a lot of fun. I couldn't stop smiling. Some of the most interesting music he played was during the soundcheck. He just unleashed this barrage of notes that went all over the place. Our friend Duncan McMillian, (himself a fine organist from Detroit) and I just looked at each other like, "what was THAT?!"
  16. EulaM - you found the quickest way to our hearts: making your first post in a food thread.
  17. I think maybe I should spend an afternoon with Chuck!
  18. I think I've been in a bit of a rut lately, partly due to life circumstances. But I seem to be leaving some things behind, in a sense; stuff that I've listened to for years. Just don't know yet where my ears might take me next.
  19. I got a chuckle out of the opening sentence to a thread Free For All started: I've done that to people! Sorry, it wasn't my intention to humiliate anyone. Do a search next time, dammit!

    Emily Remler

It is a shame - she was a fine player.
  21. I only get a banner ad on that link, but I have heard about this before; on one of those VH-1 specials. Most Metal Moments or some such. Pretty insane, to say the least!
  22. He did get some props before checking out, at least..
  23. Gotta love the Jimmy and Wes albums on Verve!
  24. DUDE! I want that Martino print-of-the-month. I need to save my change. Great work!
  25. You mean.... it's not about the music?????
