Another outing with these a few times. (I hasten to post just because i need better things to read on the board these days. not much better than others' commentaries on these BFTs mind you) Eager to see what's what as this is such a crazy set. Track 1 - An opening march that Frisell might enjoy had he played on the last cut from the first disc. Must be a sort of Hannibalistic Beer Fest theme from the land of the King. Track 2 - ? Track 3 - "Sunny Side" by ? Track 4 - yet another category of this fine medium that largely eludes me. everything starts to sound like "Tuxedo Junction" to me. Track 5 - A rare Lacy tidbit. Track 6 - Easy picking out the title. Surprised to hear that little Gershwin lick in the trumpet solo, nice. Is this the same vox as on "Sunny Side" ? Track 7 - At first I thought this might be a Clusone 3 (Michael Moore came to mind at the end) setting with Ray Anderson guesting but the bone is too sublime for Ray. Looked to my stack sitting next and I see this Dutch October meeting disc that has a piece w/ three bones and thinking Dutch the only name that is recognized by me is Wolter Wierbos. So that's my only namesake of a guess thus far for this "Indigo Mood". Track 8 - Another splendid dinner time beauty. And pretty long too! Might be a Wayne Shorter sound here? Track 9 - Oh yeah, I like this baby. Lot of simple swank in that left. While it is definitely not him because too many runs and not enough staccato I'll throw out a Danish Parlan side. Track 10 - Nice swank-gue (sawank - way). I love how this takes off into the bottom of the groove right at that lyrical part after "in other words", you know these boys got more to say than just "I love you". A bit fraid of commitment? No way are they afraid to get greazy ... as Big Joe Turner would have said; "AL!". Damn this is on fire. The zamboni is one sooped monster truck for this ride. McDuff? SHEEEEIT! as those who have gone before might say. Track 11 - Now I know this tune but my head is still listening to the last one. Another damn beautiful piece. Track 12 - Another just like the other. But " B&S". I can't figure any theme to these two BFTs for the life of me but it is there. Track 13 - ? hmmmm. Interested to find out the two speakers here on disc II. Track 14 - Back to the business that started this whole round. Another great track. and another great disc. this will be enjoyed for some time I am certain. Kudos to Ubu!!! (as opposed to oboes for kudu) many s edit my typink

#17 - yes i see that now. Hmmph, I was ready to put up all my money, too. whoever it is they owe Bill some money. is that "Everything Happens To Me."? and then he quotes Foster's "Oh Susanah". (might have been ID-ed but missed it)

Well I've waited long enough to post thinking that by osmosis that I would suddenly be able to express something. Yet another test that finds me looking at it like some second semester chemistry exam. I've given both discs more than a few listens - so mush great music- so I will just post some thoughts as I have had a hard enough time seeing all the replies pile up and can't wait to read them. Track 1 - Sounds like it might be Lester Young but it appears to be too new for that. Also gives me a feeling of a Grapelli tune. As I have neither (gather yer stones) this is just purely as guess as will be many too follow. Very lovely tune that would certainly accompany some red wine and fatty food nicely. Track 2 - This must be from Ubu's stash of 78s. Very nice and consitent crank turning I must say. This and the next few will be openers for me. Track 3 - Again. The tenor here is great and wish he had gone on a bit longer but thems the breaks with such speed. Track 4 - Tune has that "Body and Soul" melody but it is entirely another that I can't come up with. These three might be a trio medley of the same artist? Track 5 - Some serious bar honking going on here but sounds very much in that Jazz in Paris series. Might be a Hampton band from the series. Just a great stomping cut. That geet box is wack! Scrambling all around the drawing board to this one. Track 6 - This cut I thought I recognized on the first go round but have since given up. Sounds newer than a Lee Morgan side. Has that Kenny Drew blues BN sound (maybe) and I almost expected to hear McLean come in but he doesn't and I give up on the tenor. Maybe this is a modern take by a Marsalis? Nah, it's a Blue Note that is somewhere in the closet laffing. Track 7 - Nice "What is This Thing" but no idea. Rhythm team is just fantastic - the runs by the piano and drums are stellar. The bass is back there somewhere too. Track 8 - Dang, I'm supposed to know this piece. Too much tunes in the head and not enough smarts left over. Flawless rendition. Not many accordions in the BFTs, they're always good for a stump. Track 9 - Wish I could come up with more astute commentary here. Very familar tune. The first cue sounds a bit like an Ornette but it can't be that. Just maybe a sample tossed in as a quote. Have to come back to this one again. Track 10 - Pretty challenging trio. This took a couple of listens but just some fantastic interplay. Track 11 - Bit of a Silver a go go happening but sunk for the electric bass that is completely out played by all around. Probably the lightest of weight tune of the bunch. Track 12 - Eastern feel never really quite opens up in the bottom and I guess it remains a showcase for the saxophone. Some very expert durbucke as Mike can tell us that it's hard to keep that drone going for so long. My stab would be Thomas Chapin. Track 13 - Nice segue here from cut 12. Two horn line up that might teach Zorn a bit or two. Since I already used up my Chapin guess maybe this is Zorn on some Bill Laswell date. I used to be all over this way out stuff and am thoroughly taken a back as it is not my cup as much anymore but there still remains some in the bottom that I can't wash out. Track 14 - Another nice bridge from the previous. Damn pretty and I'll bet Terrason with that Ogunogunokowelloguy. Track 15 - Nice. More wine and fatty foods with these last two. Track 16 - Now where'd this come from. Shouldn't this have been after #11? I think I've heard this tune but not a clue. I like this and will very interested to see the guesses. The recording is a bit muffled to really show it off. Some Zawinul big band thing?? Track 17 - Frisell live. Man I just don't care so much for Bill anymore but Baron is always killin! Track - 18 - Duke's biznis. Truly inspired first half!! Really wish I had a smidge of the knowledge of coming up with good commentary like the others here but will just peruse happily and hopefully post disc 2 impressions soon. edit fer spellink.

last night's homework assignment brought home by my fourth grader was to fill out the brackets. i helped for the first rounds but she picked Arizona beating Gonzaga / Kentucky beating UConn and Arizona in the end. much better than math. and it gives us good reason to watch all the games we can now! -

Bruce Springsteen ESSENTIALS
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Tjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
fer certain! I remember he opened up those '78 summer shows w/ "Summertime Blues" and then did an extra work out on the Stones "Not Fade Away" right into "G L O R I A" and that Bo Diddley jungle version of "She's the One" Burning it down all the way! It wasn't ever like he was pushing goods during the old tours, just playing like no tomorrow. -
Bruce Springsteen ESSENTIALS
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Tjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Any clean issues of the '78 (?) shows from the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland(played the heck out of those cassette FM dupes) available. Missed going to that one as it was a "draw" lottery but stayed up many nights or drove down to the post office right next to the Cleveland Colliseum for Springsteen shows in the late seventies. Them tickets were like $7.50 and the shows were, what, FOUR HOURS! You can't get a kid to shovel the drive for that and guaranteed he won't finish it off with CC Rider and Devil in a Blue Dress! ... and, yes, "Held Up without a Gun" is a great B-side.... that needle used to fly across that one. Changing 45s... how inconvenient. -
Marc Ribot y los Cubanos Postizos
Man with the Golden Arm replied to mikeweil's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
The difference between them discos IMO is Medeski vs Anthony Coleman. Medeski seems to have more a grasp of the groove created by Ribot and the rhythm team that is rooted a bit more in the afro than Coleman who seems to tinker about and let those Sun Ra echos in his head come to play. Both good and even better as a whole all smattered about on a single disc. Any ever heard his Haitian music explorations? but please yall go here: afraid?, no... -
yikes! i don't think the entire state of Utah sold for that!

Favorite Stevie Wonder album
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Alon Marcus's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I voted up 'Innervisions' as well but looking at 'Songs in the Key of Life' had me thinking that that would have been more of a classic than it is had it been a single LP. Nothing wrong with the whole weave that was there and I always loved pulling out the 45 to play "Saturn" and "Ebony Eyes". But if "Knocks Me Off My Feet", "Pastime Paradise", "Ordinary Pain", "As", "Another Star" aren't the basic root of today's neo-soul then I don't know what. -

i'm gonna go home and see if my LP still smells. Not as bad as you might remember it being! The words are goofy as hell, but the music itself is pretty darn interesting more often than not. no, no. that album was the whole 'sensory thing' at the time and had been olfactorily embibed with lavendar or rose as well as having the braile embossing. a literal smell! -
Joe Williams and Ben Webster???!!!
