  1. Ditto. I've been playing it after reading this thread and it sounds fresh and fun.
  2. I would highly recommend this one!!
  3. Went back to check this out based on this thread - very tasty date.
  4. a rare peach for the Hank fan: http://cgi.ebay.com/Hank-Mobley-Roll-Call-...1QQcmdZViewItem

Ha - I was in NY and saw these guys on Weds. the 6th. Great show. My ony complaint too, was that Frisell was standing at kind of a right angle to the audience, so I did not get to see his technique either. Lovano - a guy I never really warmed to on record - was superb. Maybe I need to get out more
  6. Exactly. With kids, stuff gets jacked up - potentially really jacked up. It took me a while to "just deal with it" but I have and now I can look at some of that stuff with affection versus being very PO'd. You do save money by not buying nice stuff. The existing nice stuff (as you have discovered) is where the issues reside
  7. Got the Blakey - have not had a chance to view it yet. But - as noted above - the production appears to be first rate. Lots of photos, notes by Cuscuna, etc.
  8. No AH fetish here, but I have always enjoyed that one quite a bit.
  9. I have seen him three times over the years and find the experience very inspiring.

up to give attention to his new CD - Another Place. Very nice.
  12. Gee Jim, I thought you could toss this off the top of your head At your convenience, I would enjoy your thoughts ... if it is anything more than a complete labor of love for you, no need to bother Having said that, I am enjoying my own spin back through this material. Lots of surprises and lots of regrets!

I don't know the answers to any of your questions, but I agree - the Joe Champers compositions are a big plus on this date.
  14. I just received set no. 945 ... so not to worry.
  15. Interestingly, Terri Hinte shows up as the press contact on the new Sonny Rollins site. http://www.sonnyrollins.com/contact.php
  16. So Jim, which Milestone cuts do you have on your personal Silver City list? I am finding much of this material to be interesting and would welcome your thoughts.
  17. Ditto. Never seen him live, but his records on Savant are a blast
  18. Jim - Do you have your own Milestone "Silver City" list? I would love to see it ... I have a bunch of those lps which I never much listen to ...
  19. uhm, where is the full wood icon? awesome
  20. The second concert is as good as the first. While I agree that these concerts are more conservative than the fall concerts, they do have the upside of featuring different material. Guy In this context, I don't think "more conservative" means to imply that this is not great stuff - it is! I made the mistake of letting it "sleep" in my collection for too long (under the incorrect assumption that it somehow sounded circa 1962 ... ).
  21. That would be my recommendation too. Ditto. That is the track ("Famous Alto Break") I play for folks when I want to convey what Charlie Parker was all about. The Lee Morgan track gets big points for sheer exuberance
  22. This is a very nice one, much more recent (listing from Downtown Music Gallery): JACK WILSON TRIO - In New York (DIW 615; Japan) Jack Wilson (p), Leon Maleson (b), James Chirillo (g), Jimmy Cobb (ds). Recorded at Sound On Sound, NYC on June 4, 1993. Jack Wilson is an underrated and vastly talented pianist who made some beautiful recordings for the Blue Note label in the 1960s. Like his label-mate Big John Patton, his 90s re-emergence should introduce his talents to a whole new generation of jazz fans. This date from 1993 has never been available in the U.S. It is a crisply recorded set of mostly standards played by a sensitive and swinging trio. The tunes include Jerome Kern's Long Ago And Far Away, the Cahn-Van Heusen chestnut The Second Time Around (made famous by Sinatra) and the gentle ballad Sandie, My Love, penned by Wilson. Even though it says trio, the guitar appears on several tracks.
  23. Motian, Frisell and Lovano and the Vanguard tonight. I've had a slight negative bias towards Lovano for some time. That was completely destroyed tonight ... shame on me
  24. Me too. Me three, esp. with Mark Turner in the group. I really like what Binney has had to say the last few years.
