Amazing how many people who could/couldn't care less, have cared just enough to tell us how they feel! -
CDC Links Extra Pounds, Lower Death Risk Email this Story Apr 20, 7:56 AM (ET) By CARLA K. JOHNSON (AP) Play Free Online Games - Collapse, Bounce Out, Jigsaw, Crossword, Mah Jong and tons more. http://games.myway.com CHICAGO (AP) - Packing on the pounds is not nearly as deadly as the government thought, according to a new calculation from the CDC that found people who are modestly overweight actually have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that obesity accounts for 25,814 deaths a year in the United States. As recently as January, the CDC came up with an estimate 14 times higher: 365,000 deaths. According to the new calculation, obesity ranks No. 7 instead of No. 2 among the nation's leading preventable causes of death. The new analysis found that obesity - being extremely overweight - is indisputably lethal. But like several recent smaller studies, it found that people who are modestly overweight have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight. Biostatistician Mary Grace Kovar, a consultant for the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center in Washington, said "normal" may be set too low for today's population. Also, Americans classified as overweight are eating better, exercising more and managing their blood pressure better than they used to, she said. The study - an analysis of mortality rates and body-mass index, or BMI - was published in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association. Last year, a CDC study listed the leading causes of preventable death in order as tobacco; poor diet and inactivity, leading to excess weight; alcohol; germs; toxins and pollutants; car crashes; guns; risky sexual behavior; and illicit drugs. Using the new estimate, excess weight would drop behind car crashes and guns to seventh place - a ranking the CDC is unwilling to make official, underscoring the controversy inside the agency over how to calculate the health effects of obesity. Last year, the CDC issued a study that attributed 400,000 deaths a year to mostly weight-related causes and said excess weight would soon overtake tobacco as the top U.S. killer. After scientists inside and outside the agency questioned the figure, the CDC admitted making a calculation error and lowered its estimate three months ago to 365,000. The new study attributes 111,909 deaths to obesity, but then subtracts the benefits of being modestly overweight, and arrives at the 25,814 figure. CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding said because of the uncertainty in calculating the health effects of being overweight, the CDC is not going to use the new figure of 25,814 in its public awareness campaigns. And it is not going to scale back its fight against obesity. "There's absolutely no question that obesity is a major public health concern of this country," she said. Gerberding said the CDC will work to improve methods for calculating the consequences of obesity. CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said the agency will probably start using a range of estimates for obesity-linked deaths. Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said she is not convinced the new estimate is right. "I think it's likely there has been a weakening of the mortality effect due to improved treatments for obesity," she said. "But I think this magnitude is surprising and requires corroboration." The analysis was led by Katherine Flegal, a senior research scientist with the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. The study that had to be corrected was conducted by a different arm of the CDC, the Division of Adult and Community Health, and its authors included Gerberding. One major reason for the far lower number in this latest study is that it used more recent data, researchers said. "This analysis is far more sophisticated," said Kovar, who was not involved in the new study. "They are very careful and are not overstating their case." A related study, also in Wednesday's JAMA, found that overweight Americans are healthier than ever because of better maintenance of blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Diabetes is on the rise among people in all weight categories, however. Flegal said the two studies raise questions about what definitions to use for obesity and "where to draw the line." Under current government standards, a BMI, or weight-to-height measurement, of 25 or higher is overweight; 30 and above is obese. In recent years, the government has spent millions of dollars fighting obesity and publicizing the message that two out of three American adults are overweight or obese, and at higher risk for heart disease, arthritis and diabetes. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050420/D89J46M80.html

What class. Umm, you called me a dickhead first, but that was done with taste. Funny, EVERYONE thought Kenny G being called a pentatonic fairy fucker was hysterical awhile back, but calling him Kenny G(ay) is beyond the pale. Granted, not in the best of taste, but people have been making fun of the new Pope all day, not worried in the least about offending any Catholics on this board (To Chuck's credit, he said it was in bad taste on the Pope thread)
-
This does raise an interesting point, and this isn't the first time I've wondered about this kind of hypocrisy here on the board. Being a Christian or a Republican is a choice people make. (I dunno about fatness.) And Not believing in God or becoming a Democrat is NOT a choice one makes? Wow, I learn something every day!
-
Nah, we insult dickheads too. Didn't know you're fat too. Keep on smoking you old asshole ....hey, you must be dancing in the streets now that copyright is forever for record companies, eh what? Keep your fingers crossed about Europe, you won't have to worry about filling in the rest of Classics collections you are missing.

I'm sure there is some joke that can be make about Fat, Christian Republicans, but considering how many fat, Non-Christian Dems there are here, it would just be best to leave it be....
-
remember, it is only PC to make fun of fat people, Christians, and Republicans on this board!

Man, that sucks! Do you do the .00 for cents, or 00 over the -- mark?(And zeros under the slash, does this make sense?) I just wrote a check to the IRS and they want the .00 for cents, but it seems to me a digital reader could miss a decimal point....I would think it would be something you could fight with your bank, surely it is illegal to write a check for a hundred, and have someone cash it for a $1000! -

So, I am thinking, time to make a payment on my ol' Discover card. I sign in, page says.... Account center home Account summary Current Balance $1,383.09 Last Statement Balance $1,262.55 Minimum Payment Due Apr. 26 $26.00 Credit Available $507.00 Credit Limit $1,900.00 Available Cash $516.00 I then click on this month's statement, (ending March 27th) Discover® Card Account Summary Credit Limit $ 1,401.00 Credit Available $ 138.00 Cash Credit Limit $ 800.00 Cash Credit Available $ 138.00 This is one of too many credit cards I have, I don't use it much,(Did charge $120 for a rolling table for Mom to use in bed) I am trying to pay down some higher interest cards at this time, before I attack this one. So, my paper statement and the online one for March say I have only $ 138 of credit, but as you can see on my Account home page, it says I have a credit limit of $1900, and $507 available for credit, and $516 for cash advances!!! So, what has happened since they mailed out the statement? They think it would be nice to surprise me with a bit more credit, just didn't want to tell me about it? (And hey, give him 9 more bucks if he really needs to get a cash advance!) Did they think like I did that a $1401 limit was just a weird limit? I guess the home page will be the most up to date one, but wouldn't it hurt your head to see to different credit limits from the same company at basically the same time? Oh, I forgot, the March statement says I have $138 of credit available, $138 of cash credit available, but I have a cash credit limit of $800...I guess IF I have $800 on my card that is all I could take off the card, right??? double -
a few years ago, when I used to do half decent biz on ebay, I used media mail for awhile, but it caused customers and myself worry thinking items they ordered were lost in the mail, 2 to 3 weeks to the west coast sometimes. So went to first class. Videos were more expensive, but 99% of the time, a single cd costs the same whether it is shipped first class, or Media!

I bet ABC is a bit mad at their little brother right about now.... 'Monday Night Football' moving to ESPN Deal to cost cabler $1.1 bil over 8 years By ASSOCIATED PRESS The NFL's 'Monday Night Football' is making the move to cable after 35 years on ABC. The NFL's "Monday Night Football," a hallmark of television sports programming since the days of Howard Cosell, is leaving ABC after 35 years for ESPN starting with the 2006 season. The NFL's new broadcast deal also brings football back to NBC for the first time in six years. NBC will take over the Sunday night games previously broadcast on ESPN, and plans to use a flexible scheduling model that ensures meaningful games will played in that slot late in the season. The Monday night move to basic cable, which includes an earlier start time of 8:40 p.m. eastern, is expected to cost ESPN $1.1 billion over eight years, two sources familiar with the deals told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. NBC will get the Sunday night package for $600 million over six years, according to the sources. The network will also get the Super Bowl in 2009 and 2012 as part of the deal, one of the sources said. The NFL will continue to show all cable games on free, over-the air television in home markets. That means that local stations will carry ESPN's Monday night games in the cities of the teams involved. The moves leave ABC -- which reshaped sports broadcasting by turning football into a prime-time ratings draw with the advent of "Monday Night Football" in 1970 -- as the only major network without NFL football. ABC and ESPN are both subsidiaries of The Walt Disney Co. The deal with ESPN, which currently carries games every Sunday night and sometimes on Thursday, was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. "A great deal with the NFL is the best deal you can get in television," said NBC sports chairman Dick Ebersol. He said the network hasn't started working on finding anchors for the Sunday night broadcast. "We're celebrating for a day," Ebersol said. "Then I'm sure we'll get a lot of calls." Last month, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue said during the NFL meetings in Hawaii that the Monday night move was a strong possibility. ABC, which has been losing money on the package despite high ratings, had been balking at the NFL's asking price. NBC has been struggling in prime-time this season, and even risks an unprecedented fall into fourth place in the ratings. ABC's newfound ratings strength with "Desperate Housewives" on Sunday nights has been particularly damaging. NBC will devote its entire Sunday night prime-time lineup to the NFL. The Sunday night games will start at 8:15 p.m. eastern and include flexible scheduling for the final seven weeks of the season, details of which will be developed by the league. That issue has become more pressing since parity caused by the salary cap has resulted in teams moving up and down the standings annually, leaving bad teams that were strong the previous season in prime time and good teams that were bad the past season off of it. CBS and Fox already have agreed to pay a total of $8 billion over six years for the rights to Sunday afternoon games. The NFL is still considering an eight game late-season package of Thursday and Saturday night games on cable and satellite. Tagliabue has said the NFL's own new network could show some or all of those games. Associated Press Writer David Bauder also contributed to this http://www.variety.com/VR1117921273.html

Yeah, like there's not enough of those already... No, I don't...please explain in great detail. -
I have volumes 1,2, 3 and 6. The first cd has some nice numbers like Waiting for Katie, Memphis Blues...I enjoy the rougher Benny Goodman style that you hear back then...a fair number of Alternates on the first 2 volumes....I've always liked the novelty songs like Buy, Buy for Baby(or Baby Will Bye Bye You) so sue me! Heck, I even like Ben Pollack singing My Kinda Love(Volume 3), which appearently makes me an evil human being.

No joke, I have thought about posting something like this on and off for quite some time, but never could word it quite the way I wanted to. I wanted to praise, and slap them all at the same time! Seriously though, it is one thing to write pretty good English (better than many of us here) but to "get" American humor, to be funny in something that is not your native tongue, to say something like you feel "stoopid" well dammit, bravo! -
Funny, I compare all tenor players to Larry Binyon and Babe Russin. I find it's more fair.
