  1. How are you paying for them? Are you giving Credit card info over the phone? Or are you living overseas these days? Do they have nice booklets? Enough with the questions already Berigan!
  2. First, there seems to be two Past Perfects.... the one in England.. http://www.pastperfect.com/index.html and the one in Germany, that puts out 10 "gold" cds (they don't look quite like other Gold cds) in box sets, with nice, thick booklets. I thought I caught a break a couple years ago getting a Duke Ellington set for $39.95 . Pretty decent sound, and a cheap way to catch up on a large period of an Artist... I never got the Billie Holiday set, nor the Coleman Hawkins one...now they are all over Ebay for under $30, and if you dig around Barnes and Noble, you can find them in the mid $20's!!!! Portrait is usually in the title of the box set. And then I checked deepdiscountcd.com.... $19.48!!!! And they ship for free! http://www.deepdiscountcd.com/search.cfm?a...x=49&search.y=7 (there is a Benny Goodman set, they seem to have just a one cd "Set" for sale there) So, what is the story anyway??? Did the German company go out of business? If not, how the heck can they make money when the sets are selling retail for about $2 per disc?????
  3. Sad news indeed....I am glad he showed up the doctors,(His son made an excellent point about doctors having no right to say how long someone is going to live) who gave him 3-6 months to live, and made it much longer than that.....
  4. a few things from the article I noticed....The New York illusionist Who is this dope??? Oh, now the name rings a bell, noted illusionist/time waster! http://www.davidblaine.cjb.net/ also.....Blaine's girlfriend Manon von Gerkan was forced to wipe the egg yolk off the box which measures 7ft deep, 7ft long and 3ft wide. Who forced this beauty to do this??? Isn't England a free country??? Who is going to care about this, this, what would you call it? He is not starving himself like Gandhi did to help free a nation, (As far as I know) is some restaurant/beer company sponsoring this idiot? Meanwhile, I don't stand a chance with some women because of my taste in music,(old jazz, heavy metal) Movies(old) cars,(big and old) tastes in sports, whathaveyou, yet this nincompoop gets her.... and don't you just know he is holding onto his precious bodily fluids for the next 40 days and nights......she will have to do without for a month and a half!!!! at least I'm not bitter about this......

Besides Smoltz, Ortiz, and perhaps Hampton, who would most playoff teams even want? Of course, I am sure if one dug thru the early posts I posted this year, I swore there was no way this team could compete, so perhaps they will just bash their way into the WS, beating the Yankees of course! 6. If you want to see what some have sold for, and what is still up.... http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcI...&sort=3&rows=25
  7. If he/she is so sad to see them go, then why do most of the sets say, like new, never played??? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=2557035222
  8. Makes me mad, and a little scared using credit cards on the web! http://www.iht.com/articles/108857.html
  9. oh yes, the Cassettes! Not quite as good as the Marvelettes, or the Exciters, but still good in their own right!
  10. SEK/Steve, your story is amazing! It is great that you have proven the doctors wrong, again! It reminds me of hearing about how The rock musician Warren Zevon has just past the 1 year mark of his diagnosis of lung cancer, and was of course given just 3-6 months to live. His son made a very good point saying doctors have no right to say how long someone will live. There isn't really an up side to that, some patients no doubt go home to die after hearing that kind of news. I do see exactly where you(And Soul Stream) are coming from with using energy to fight a case that might be better used for fighting the Cancer. I have been less upset than I thought I would be with the doctor(s) negligence. I just want my Mom to get better! But, I also think society sometimes lets things "be" and does not press charges against known rapists, or fighting back if they are fired for unjust reasons, or, dragging a doctor into court who really needs to be. The main heart specialist should have taken the time to read the radiologists report, and if he failed my Mom, he has no doubt failed others, perhaps he is close to being pushed out of group he belongs to, and this could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. We'll see, down the road.....
  11. Rooster, some choices, depending out your taste, which I assume runs more serious from what you said but will toss in a few comedies as well. First, Call Northside 777 is very underrated, check out the review, though there are always spoilers in their reviews...Winchester '73 his first turn at a serious western, which seemed so far off from what he could play till he did it...when he pushes a guy's head down into a bar in one scene, he looked as crazy as I have ever seen him look! My favorite western of his is Naked Spur (directed by Anthony Mann who directed him in several films) I will now get lazy and post what Allmovie says///Stewart plays a taciturn frontiersman who loses his home while he's off fighting the Civil War. To raise enough money for a new grubstake, Stewart becomes a bounty hunter in Colorado territory. His first quarry is fugitive, killer Robert Ryan. Stewart's efforts to bring in Ryan and collect the reward are compromised by the presence of Ryan's loyal girl friend Janet Leigh and Stewart's two disreputable sidekicks, wily prospector Millard Mitchell and disgraced Union-officer Ralph Meeker. There's plenty of "cat and mouse" byplay between Stewart and Ryan before the brutal climax; the drama is intensified by the fact that both men are on the outer rim of total insanity. No Highway in the Sky is a suspenseful tale about an engineer who, as allmovie saysengineer who has formed a scientific theory about metal fatigue in a specific model of aircraft. He tries to convince British Airways that their airplanes will come apart after a certain amount of miles, but no one believes him. now, comedy wise, Destry Rides Again is very good, it saved Dietrich's career, (she is also in No Highway in the Sky) The Shop Around the Corner, with the ultra sexy voiced Margaret Sullivan in the first and best version of You've Got Mail....I mentioned on another thread that I didn't "get" why Harvey was so well thought of, but it grew on me each time I caught it, to the point it is one of my favorite Stewart films...and Peggy Dow....is a babe! It's a Wonderful World(no, I didn't confuse the film title!) from 1939 with Claudette Colbert , and Vivacious Lady from 1938 with Ginger Rogers are both out of print, but you might find them...but start with the earlier ones if you have missed them! Many Anthony Mann westerns to see if you like them!
  12. B3-er, thanks!!! I am so sorry about your Mom!
  13. Thanks again everyone for all the suggestions and the kind words!!!! It means a lot to me..... My Mom saw her new Oncologist last Thursday. We like him, he seems to get the urgency of the situation. I doubt she will see the breast specialist again....hell, he is just getting back from vacation Tomorrow. The new doctor, with a hard to pronounce name seemed quite thorough. He is part of a practice on the south side of Atlanta, where we live. I went along with my Mom and Dad to meet him, because I was going to check him out, and if we/I didn't like him, it was to Emory, Mayo, the Houston clinic, anywhere, to find a good Doctor. We had brought along records from her recent CAT scan, the half done MRI, x-rays, and records from her stay in the hospital around New Years for her Heart condition. We had to cancel the first appointment with this new doctor last Tuesday because the skeleton staff at the breast doctor's office claimed they could not get the records copied in time for Tuesday. So, anyway as the doctor is looking thru 20+ pages of records, not to mention the films...he says something to the effect of, Wait a second! This report from the radiologist dated 12-29-02, mentions an enlarged Lymph node!!! Man, I felt the blood drain when he said that. He seemed kind of stunned himself. Seems at the bottom of a page there is mention of a 4.7 cm mass. Of course, no one saw fit to mention this at the hospital, nor did any of the heart specialists that saw her, and she saw 3 or 4 when she was in the hospital for a week. I recall getting kind of concerned when we didn't hear back as soon as they claimed we would on the CAT scan ....Think it had to do with her being slightly anemic. They did a lower G.I. and this CAT scan and we were told the only thing that showed up were a few small gall stones. So someone really dropped the ball, and even though they are paid well into 6 figures, could not be bothered to read what the Radiologist said, and the radiologist didn't seem to word it in such a way to make it a real red flag! So Mom could have had treatment right away, and instead has had the tumor(s) growing for 8+ months without treatment. We are mad, but still kind of in shock, I think we are just more concerned with getting her well first, then worrying about suing....her nephew came to visit just as we found this out (He is a Public Defender in Northern California) and thinks we should sue now...I just don't know if the stress on my Mom is worth it. He said we have a year from finding out about the negligence to sue...might just want to wait till Mom is stronger. The Doctor said on a scale of 1 to 4 with 4 being the most serious, this case is at least a 3 with the size of the one tumor, and the spreading. Perhaps a 4. He has ordered the PET scan that still was not ordered at the other Doctor's office. He ordered another CAT scan that she had today, to see how much bigger the main tumor had gotten in the 3 weeks since the last scan. Her lymph nodes on her neck have gotten even bigger in the last few days, very scary. She just wants treatment, today!!! The doctor had said that there are many types of Chemo, and that hers would as of now have to be classified as a Cancer of unknown origin. He had mentioned starting her on Chemo either this Friday, or perhaps Monday. I don't know if he wants all the tests done before hand,(Bone scan is the 18th, I think) but she needs to get started ASAP if there is to be a fighting chance. The doctor said the right things when we saw him , he was upfront, didn't sugarcoat anything(As her Neurologist claimed most Oncologists like to do) but still was optimistic. He said if Mom had any questions to call, that he was at this office 5 days a week. I don't know if it is like it is here in Atlanta where everyone else lives, but most Doctors seem to want to spread themselves between 2 or 3 offices, and you can only see them on Mondays unless you want to drive 55 miles to their other office where your records or not on hand. He talked about a support group at the same clinic we were at, and something about 80 oncologists somehow involved(Some information is still a blur) He gave us all confidence, and hope as we left his office, we got less secure feelings once we left, just because we all know how serious this is, and LOTS of time has been wasted by health care professionals who could/should be better than they have been to my Mom. They should treat any patient like they were a relative, not just a number. It is funny, with my Cousin in town, Mom perked up, and she made it abundantly clear to the Oncologist that she isn't ready to die, so that is important, and for the most part, she has kept herself positive, and we have tried to do the same for her. Things will seem just about normal for a few days....Last night when she showed me how the lumps in her neck, I could tell she is getting very concerned, as if she wasn't already. She is more concerned for my Dad and Me, than herself... a truly selfless woman. So, if anyone here has been putting off getting any kind of medical test, or has a stubborn family member who needs one, for God's sake, get in there and get the test!
  14. Several months back, I posted on one of the jazz boards(Harlem perhaps?) about how it seemed strange that a major figure in Woody Herman's band like Chubby was still alive, and yet we never read much about him, and someone was nice enough from the website this link comes from to email me this link...since they said it was aok to post it, thought I would....I didn't know he was the one you hear yelling in so many live performances! Haven't seen their website before, but looks interesting! http://members.aol.com/plabjazz/jackson.html
  15. Soul Stream, who is the lovely lady on your Avatar????
  16. you know, I read in some mag last year the Shakira was a jazz fan!!! Had gone to see somebody at some small club in California ....no , I don't remember who, where I read it, or what club...but I really do have a photographic memory, honest! In case you don't know who she is....
  17. Yes!!! I am the only one overweight so far!!!!
  18. Well, surely you can up your posting prowess to 4 posts a month eh?
  19. SEK, So sorry about your Father! You are quite the fighter, and it really paid off! Glad to hear that a delay in diagnosis doesn't always mean it is too late. A few years! I hope that doctor is paying much more attention to his patients these days, or better yet, is now out of the medical field. Sounds like you could be a motivational speaker for fellow cancer survivors. Did you go to support groups?
  20. No joke, my top 3 films are.... 1It's a Wonderful Life (Hey, I watched it in the late 70's on PBS-if you catch it in the middle, it almost seems like an early Twilight zone show-I liked it before it was cool to like it, or dislike it) 2) Casablanca. The perfect film, simple as that. 3) Airplane. Best comedy ever, IMHO. Julie Hagerty as Elaine Dickinson: Cream? Michelle Stacy as Young Girl with Coffee: No Thanks. I take it black, like my men. >listen<
  21. Lots o' good choices!!! Rooster Ties, interesting your take on the Godfather movies! I was born in 1967, don't think I saw them in the theatre, but saw them on TV all the time growing up, which I think helps greatly, since they were "Just movies" not icons like they are today. I usually can't care less about Mob stories, but Coppola and Martin Scorsese (Goodfellas anyone??) make great movies about people I don't care about as characters, yet always watch anyway. I think seeing films that are considered great works of art, best of all time kinds of films is an uphill battle. I forced my best friend to sit thru 2 films he had never seen somehow(And he is a few years older than me) Casablanca, then Maltese Falcon. His reaction after seeing each was, "That's it?" Seeing movies like those with someone seeing them for the first time is interesting....Mary Astor seems quite hammy, almost as if the role was too demanding of her talents.(I think she is much better in light roles in films such as The Palm Beach Story, or Across the Pacific) Nothing is wrong with Casablanca of course! And As I pointed out to my friend, he guessed wrong as to what the outcome of each film was going to be, and he usually guesses newer films dead to rights early on. I hope some day he will give the films another chance, expecting less. I remember seeing Harvey the first time, and having the same sort of feeling, what is the big deal about this film? Caught it in the middle years later, and laughed a few times, then caught it from the beginning later on, and thoroughly enjoyed it, having no expectations! Kind of like what happens in jazz sometimes, eh????
  22. I always suspected that! The old Verfremdungs-Effekt... Is it true, Weizen? And how was your trip?? Speaking of MIA's where you been at, Maren?????
  23. My God, just saw this!!! He was at the ball park Weds! What a strong, strong man. One of my biggest thrills was Bobby being traded to the Cards . A real power hitter on my team! He was 34 and looked to have several good years ahead, but got hit in the wrist with a pitch, and was never the same....He played for the Cubs the next year(His last) and I saw him hit a homerun against the Cards that won the game for the Cubs. I was estatic. Really confused the friend of my Dad who had taken me to the game, thought I was a Cards fan!
