  1. Up.......well, I thought it was cool...... Perhaps down would be the better word to use!
  2. I am not a drinker either, I must confess.....Beer , draft beer is ok, but think most alcohol should just be used to sterilize utensils.....Don't tell Weizy, or Catesta....the shame, oh the shame......
  3. Hey, same birthday as my Mom! No wonder you are cool!
  4. Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Did it have a happy ending?????
  6. Happy Birthday!!!! Hope you get another Mercedes, 2 is just not enough!!!!
  7. Never heard of it, but I haven't really looked all that hard for other brands either. I can tell I probably need to check out a good liquour store sometime, and see what else is out there, in the way of other brands of hard cider. Say it out loud, and quickly Rooster!!!!
  8. Late, I do believe you are correct! Yes, he is a fun player, wish more folks felt that way, hopefully the Proper set has helped the situation... Mills Blue Rhythm Band also used Baritones in unison for an bit of a sinister effect....>St. Louis Wiggle Rhythm-track two, bastards won't let me link directly!<
  9. Some motorcyclists think they are indestructible they find out in the split second before death, that they are not!!! I still shutter when I think about this on time I am driving thru Atlanta on I-75 and I see a bunch of young guys driving in the HOV lane on race bikes, popping wheelies!!!! Did I mention it was nighttime, and I was doing 75-80, and they were passing me like I was standing still??? What really made me feel ill, was when one guy was just on one wheel, and decided to leave the far right lane and go over a lane, across those reflective bumps Thought for sure I was going to see him die, somehow he just rocked a bit....wonder if he is still alive a few months later.....
  10. Glad to hear so far, so good!!!! I thought I should mention that Vibes parents had the right idea! Folks should have photo albums, important paperwork, a few OOP cds , in a few boxes to take at a moments notice, just in case the winds kick back up or some nut decides to be a copycat. Hell, just a cigarette out a car window could cause a new problem! Something else to mention, I saw that a couple tried to drive thru some fire in sporty car,(Or the fire found them as they were trying to escape) and didn't make it...perhaps having an escape route planned out, with as few trees overhead as possible isn't too crazy.....
  11. Rooster, I hope it didn't seem as though I was going after you personally, I wasn't! I just feel that a mistake that was not of Borders making, is not the kind to take advantage of. They are not being reimbursed as they would be from the publisher with the book coupon. Heck, if so many folks want to save 33% on most everything (except net titles, inside joke ) and 40% for one day,(employee appreciation day) get a part time job at your friendly neighborhood Borders during the holidays! Not only will you get the sheer unadulterated joy of gift wrapping bargain books just as you were about to go to lunch, having customers tell you about a "blue covered" book they have heard about, or trying to return a boxful of yellowing books, or the scratched cd(It was scratched when I opened it!) but you will also work with some of the most interesting folks you will ever come across.
  12. Hope everyone is ok!!!! Amazed at how very little media coverage this story has gotten overnight, as it sounds like as bad a fire as there has been in California, in decades.....Sounds like from what I read on a non jazz board that the story is very big in California of course...but Hurricanes get so much press upto, during and after the storm, so it isn't just a "local" story issue, IMO. I bet we will hear much today, hope the Santa Anna Winds die down!
  13. Canadian wins rock, paper, scissors world title The competitors, in glitzy, off-the-wall costumes, call themselves professional athletes. Some even bring along team doctors to supervise their nutrition and take them through intense warm-ups. This, it seems, is serious stuff to the 320 competitors who shook their fists early into Sunday morning at the World Rock, Paper, Scissors Championships at a nightclub in downtown Toronto. The man who did win, and netted himself a purse of C$5,000 ($US3,825), was Toronto's Rob Krueger, a member of the team "Legion of the Red Fist". To achieve the lofty title of World RPS Champion, he threw a combination of rock-paper-paper, defeating his opponent's offering of three rocks. Treading a thin line between silly spectacle and serious sport, the event drew a crowd of about 900, including many bemused spectators who wandered around , with drinks in hand, among a slew of local and international media. Andy Cumming, 28, flew to Canada from London with five other members of the United Kingdom team, as well as their team doctor who counsels them on warmups, diet and practice. "It's an internationally played game, you know," he said, wearing a pair of worker's overalls with the red, white and blue of the Union Jack patterned on it. "It's a complete travesty that not many people take it seriously." To the uninitiated, taking the playground game seriously is something of a tall order. Many competitors wore crude, homemade costumes, and played with a can of beer in their non-throwing hand. Douglas Walker, managing director of the Toronto-based, 700-member World RPS Society, is a little more realistic about the so-called sport he promotes. "We take rock, paper, scissors about as seriously as you take something like rock, paper, scissors. We have a lot of fun with the concept." --Reuters http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/s975703.htm
  14. Man, thought for sure someone would have mentioned Ernie Caceres! Though checking at allmusic.com, I saw no solo albums, is that true??? He played with Eddie Condon a fair bit, Armstrong, and others...really wish he had recorded more Baritone, his clarinet is fine, but he seemed born to play the Baritone.... I REALLY wish Jimmy Dorsey had played more baritone...he did some recordings with Joe Venuti/Eddie Lang in the mid/late 20's and seemed very comfortable playing one.....
  15. MOOSE, I think you need someone who has a real discography to do real research....I think a few tracks are on the two cds listed below, but unfortunately, when I looked up magic cds, the sites selling them had no track listings!!!! http://www.venerablemusic.com/catalog/Titl...sp?TitleID=4156 http://www.venerablemusic.com/catalog/Titl...sp?TitleID=4138
  16. I am sure you jazz snobs, I mean... connoisseurs , don't stoop to look in the Miller section , lest a jazz friend catch you doing this, but there are dozens and dozens of live cds....Magic has put out tons of them....I just can't believe that some, if not most of the tracks are not on cd at this time, unless BMG just has a stranglehold on these tracks, and they love to make moola off of Miller....Moose, can you give me a few tracks that are on these lps??? The slightly less common ones???? I have also said it before,(and wow could people care less! ) but there is a all instrumental cd from RCA called The Spirit is Willing, that is the best of the non-Army Band recordings, IMO. (A quick check shows the cd is out of print) The title track is about as un-Miller a recording as you will ever find....of course, since it is out of print, no samples could I find.....
  17. Exactly. I know a very good second hand jazz record dealer - unfortunately he had to go out of business for reasons of poor health - who got several large collections that way, and one of them had a complete selection of the Chronological Classics CDs. Jazz Is Beck, a German mail order shop, offered a subscription to these until recently, and quite a few jazz lovers didn't miss a single issue. Man, to not miss an issue would be great! It is sad to buy a used cd, and to think someone who loved jazz most likely died for you to get it...I have gotten some cds with little post-it notes saying when it was listened to, in shaky handwritting. perhaps bittersweet is better than sad, as the jazz isn't just sitting in a damp basement, or tossed in a dumpster, but being listened to by the next jazz fan... and Brownie, don't feel foolish!!! Get it wherever you can!!! besides, I get outbid half the time I bid on this sellers cds....
  18. Damn!!!! Imagine what a real one would go for???? I see the fake ones(I assume) a fair bit at car shows around ATL...they look great, and if you have to pay into 6 figures for a real one, I say replicas are a good idea...of course, I have two cars that didn't cost a third of this reserve not met vehicle....of course, they aren't as fast either, but I would take on a Cobra any day at a demolition derby!
  19. You know, I am surprised how few people voted for plain ol' bop.... I voted for fusion of course....don't let the zero fool you.
  20. I had ignored the dull looking letter at the top of the Amazon page (Who cares what they are touting, I want to look something up, outta my way jerkface! ) So, I put my ADD on hold for a sec and read it...says something about being able to search every word in over 120,000 books! Search didn't look any different ( A mistake not to have an advanced search separate for this, IMHO) but I typed in Manny Klein, not the most famous name in jazz, and several books came up, with a excerpt with his name mentioned, and the page it is mentioned on. There is a link to get to the text from the Book! Hard to read, but there is a zoom at the bottom of the (copywrited) text. I was able to highlight the text and print, but looks kind of poor. But, I think long run, this is going to be great to see if someone is mentioned in a book, or what book it was you saw the reference...obviously, it will work nicely outside of jazz as well, but all I have used it for....anyone else use this yet??? If someone has mentioned it before, sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. You know, I had no idea how amazingly good the Marlins starters were before the playoffs started!!!!! Becket hit 100 against Sammy Sosa, Penny hit 99 the other day, Pavano was mid 90's, and one of the main reasons they were able to be in the World Series, Dontrelle Willis, was a left hand specialist in the WS! and to think they did this without their stud pitcher!!!! I always heard about was A.J. Burnett. When he gets healthy, look out!!!! Wonder how Burnett, and Torburg feel about this????? A May 7th story about a team that you would not expect to be in the World's Champs .... Team schedules elbow exam for Beckett -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins, who already have two starting pitchers on the disabled list, lost right-hander Josh Beckett to an elbow injury Wednesday night. Beckett Beckett was pulled from the 3-2 loss to San Francisco after one inning because he felt discomfort in his elbow. After Beckett was examined by team physician Dr. Dan Kanell, the Marlins hastily scheduled an appointment for the right-hander Thursday with orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Andrews performed reconstructive elbow surgery April 29 on another young Marlins right-hander, A.J. Burnett, who may be sidelined until 2005. Left-hander Mark Redman broke the thumb on his pitching hand the same day and likely will be out until late this month. "I didn't think it could happen again," manager Jeff Torborg said. "Unfortunately it has." Beckett threw 28 pitches in his only inning against the Giants, including more curveballs than usual. His fastball topped out at 96 mph, but he walked Benito Santiago with the bases loaded and left trailing 1-0. "He wanted to keep pitching," Torborg said. "I said, 'Uh-uh. I'm not fooling with this.' " Beckett said he has been bothered by stiffness and tenderness in his elbow since a start in Philadelphia on April 15. He downplayed the symptoms in discussions with the training staff -- until Wednesday night. "It has been an ongoing deal," he said. "I don't think it's that bad. Hopefully I miss five days and I'm back at it." Beckett, 22, has never had elbow trouble. He had tendinitis in his right shoulder as a minor leaguer in 2000, and he spent three stints on the disabled list last year because of recurring blisters on the middle finger of his pitching hand. Beckett is 2-3 with a 3.76 ERA in eight starts. http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2003/0507/1550643.html
