  1. Just got my set....YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Clandy, I like vocals very much, I can take most vocals, but I know a lot of jazz fans really chafe at the chaff when they hear the vocals, and some are not going to like those early tracks...I want people to get this set, but they have to know that singing was so very different back then, and you really learn to love someone who could sing in a timeless way...have had to paint all day, so only got to hear the first disc...some poor vocals IMO, and Bunny doesn't get to do much till around track 8 , then it really picks up, and I have never been so glad to hear the Boswell sisters in all my life! Also, very glad that I am hearing records I don't have, I glanced at the song titles more than the actual groups, so tracks like the very first one,(When I take my Sugar to Tea) are not the Boswells, but some other anonymous group.... So, it sounds like others are ahead of me, what is the 411???
  2. Never read any of the books, too long! My Mom loves them though B) In fact, Friday night/Saturday Morn, my best friend and I hit Books a Million and Barnes and Noble to hang out at a Bookstore in the AM, and to get my Mom a copy, no mean feet, in fact, left Books a Million to try to get a copy at B&N, and got one, after the lines died down....at 2 AM! Weird to see all these little Kids dressed up after midnight, but it is great to see kids(And AARP members like my Mom) excited about a book, and even better to be a former bookstore employee when it happened!
  3. Man, after making thru the letter E, I now need a bath ...don't let Chris A. see what was said about Michael Jackson!
  4. Never found many photos of Bunny Berigan on the web, but here is one.. I am betting the Mosaic will be great for the photos alone! How to guys play trumpet with a mustache anyway??? Just noticed that the cd cover is is clearly from the same date/time/venue as the one above
  5. Wow, never saw a photo of him as an old man!
  6. Weird Al is the man! . Loved it when he took over MTV for few hours, back in the day. Just when you think he will have to give it up, he comes back, better than ever! to Coolio and the Red Hot Chili Peppers for bitching about his parodies, they should be honored. Eminem let Al do a cover of whatever that song from 8 mile was, but not a video..truly a humor challenged "man" I don't know why, but I still remember Weird Al, John Mellencamp, and some MTV dude being at the premiere for Purple Rain, I think, and Weird said, We all knew he could act, but who knew he could sing? Perhaps you had to see him say it, but it cracked my up and lodged in my brain to this day...
  7. I am so jealous!
  8. I was surprised to see this as well, and I should have mentioned to folks you could have gotten it for $12-$13 bucks just a few months ago at Amazon! Now, it is back to $31, but it is well worth it, with better sound than the few RST cds I heard....Hindsight put out a very nice live set of live Artie Shaw in the same kind of long box set with a good sized booklet.... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=music&n=507846 Oh, and >Harry James as well!<
  9. You know, I have always understood why Jackie Robinson got so much publicity, but never have understood why Larry Doby is all but forgotten, he didn't have it any easier....rest in piece Mr. Doby.
  10. First, Catesta, excellent taste! Metallica and Guns N' Roses kind of stretch for the 10-15 year mark, they have recorded in that period, and I like 'em so what the hell . Megadeth, Megadeth, Megadeth! Thrash will always rule! Alice N' Chains, Anthrax!!! The Cult. Morphine, damn but they were good! Marcy Playground, first album deserved better, Sex and Candy wasn't the best song by far. If you, yes you, are old and like mellow music only, Try Cowboy Junkies! So mellow, my Mom says they are boring, but I really like their sound, Lay It Down never seems to get mentioned, but I love that album, not a weak song! Susan Vega. 99.9° F. I know some don't like her non folk period, but this is a great album IMO. No love for Liz Phair??? I would like to give her my love! Besides, Exile in Guyville has many very good songs. her latest album has a song with the title of H. W. C. Figure it out....
  11. It's a lame list, but number one is right! B)
  12. One can win a rave??? They have judges and everything? I learn something every day! So, even you are a NASCAR fan? What'ya know! Interesting question, and I would have a tough time saying, but I think most people will always go with who wins the race...look at the Greg Norman in Golf....
  13. Ghost, I would be for it as well! The Classics are great, but hey, they will release lots of blue note stuff in the next few years as well, yet we know folks will always want the superior sound of the original recordings..and alternate and unreleased tracks. I am sure there must be some interesting recordings gathering dust in the vaults of Columbia/Sony...to be lost to the ages if someone like Mosaic does not get to them someday....
  14. Hey, for those who mentioned wiseguy...good news! http://www.dvdplanet.com/product_listing.a...4137&format=DVD
  15. Aug 26th, a year to the day that season 2 came out...but you can imagine how hard it is to get a few directors and producers together(They have yet to let/have the actors comment on the DVDs)to sit down and watch 22, 22 minute long shows and reminisce for the audio commentary track!
  16. Everything Lon said Ghost! Bunny plays in such a low register as to almost, almost sound like a trombonist! I think the way the miked, and the mike(s) themselves added to the effect, but very cool!
  17. jacknife, thanks for mentioning this site! Never heard of it before, but found some interesting dvds as well (Quiet Man, Rio Grande) for $4.99! And these are not public domain type titles, these are from Republic...pretty cool!
  18. S.W.A.T. You remember (if you were alive in the 70's-and in America) The Aaron Spelling show, with Robert Urich, Steven Forrest, and ...others? http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?ite...temID=COL000346 Kind of shocked there is enough demand for this show to be on DVD...but there it is...so...what else? Just off the top of my head, I wonder how many Playhouse 90 shows are still around? Or some of the other anthology type shows? We always get to see a clip from one when A&E does a Biography show on Paul Newman, etc.... I see some shows on very cheap tapes(Quality, and pricewise) I saw a 6-8 tape box set once that weighed nothing, with shows like The Betty Hutton Show, Annie Oakley, stuff that never, ever shows up on Nick at Night...ok...not a great example of a series that people might pay money for...like S.W.A.T.! Get Smart, perhaps? The Bob Newhart show? Newhart? Bob? (Hey, I would pay for Bob on DVD!) So what am I forgetting that isn't out yet???? Oh, when I joked about S.W.A.T. being out, and told my Mom it was 22 bucks, she said that wasn't too bad, perhaps it would be interesting to see...I started to think so to, but snapped back to my senses..for awhile at least!
  19. I forgot to add....I didn't write this, don't you know!
  20. I think anyone, at any age can.... Recently I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. -- Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how this insidious disease manifests itself: I decided to wash my car. As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the hall table. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the trashcan under the table, and notice that the trashcan is full. So I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the trash first. But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the trash anyway, I may as well pay the bills first. I take m y checkbook off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go to my desk where I find the can of pop that I had been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the pop aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.? I see that the pop is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the pop, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye -- they need to be watered. I set the pop down on the counter, and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, we will be looking for the remote, but nobody will remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: the car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, there is a warm can of pop sitting on the counter, the flowers aren't watered, there is still only one check in my checkbook, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e- mail.
  21. Glad to post it! He comes across much differently than I imagined what he was like, much more open here, at least the day he was interviewed...I have the Mosaic box set, but just skimmed the liner notes
  22. That Mosaic set was only 48 bucks when it was in print, and it is quite nice... also, Imagination is very good, a little better than Blues-ette, IMO, love the song Kachin'...I found it used at a wherehouse music for $2.99! Wish I got lucky like that more often!
  23. Well, I will keep it short this time, as I managed to click on a link in an email and it wiped out a few paragraphs here...even though I had several browser windows open at the time Anyway, I just got a cheap dvd from passport video called Louis Armstrong, 100th Anniversary. Hosted by actress Paula Kelly(Who?) started off poorly, cut a 30's number in the middle, was about to turn off, then it got much better . Gerald Wilson and Red Holloway talk for a few minutes each, then the numbers start to really flow. Louis at the Hollywood Bowl, with Eddie Fisher , Bing and Louis do a TV version of Now You Has Jazz, Louis in front of the troops singing Hello Dolly, Velma Middleton with Louis in the 40's(She dances like a woman weighing 130, not 230 pounds) and some great TV appearances with Buster Bailey and Tyree Green, on trombone and Vibes, and singing with Sinatra as well...not bad at all for the 4 bucks I paid for the disc! I had to buy 100 bucks worth of stuff minimum to get it at buyritedvd.com but I saw it at this site as well, but never dealt with them http://classicvideovault.zoovy.com/product...DLOUISARMSTRONG I think it is on Ebay as well, and for less than 10 bucks, it is worth it, warts and all
  24. I shudder to think Mnytime! Hopefully there won't be too many from Irving Kaufman! I will still be getting it, no matter what! I don't know if Louie said that Bix was his favorite, but he might have...there was a 1941 downbeat that had a page with Louis said that his Bunny was the best player, next to himself, of course! He might have been trying to give Bunny a bit of a lift at that time, because things were not going too well physically, or financially at the time,(He died in 1942) but not to take anything away from either of them, they had a true mutual admiration thing going on, in fact, Bunny sat in and played muted trumpet in the background on a few of Louie's Decca recordings in the 30's...this quote was all I could find, sounds like what I recall the article saying as well... I have a scan of the downbeat article somewhere, and if I find it, I will add it... "I've always admired Bunny for his tone, his soul, his technique, and his sense of phrasing....To me, Bunny can do no wrong in music." http://www.riverwalk.org/proglist/showprom...es_of_swing.htm
