BERIGAN - why can't I see you Avatar???
BERIGAN replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Forums Discussion
So, I guess this avatar has been just for my amusement for the last week! Now the tree should be falling in all forests, and making lots of noise, heard by everyone... -
Hey, I like the photo, something sweet about it! And Chris, I got the PM, no, I don't know her name, or her phone number, sorry!

Now I am curious, does no one see my avatar? Is it just an X??? If they could be a bit bigger, hint, hint, we all could choose some really cool stuff!!!! -
Race and Racial Interaction, in America and beyond
BERIGAN replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Jazzmoose, Rooster Ties, I did check out this topic, didn't really know if I had anything to add to it..(But when has that ever stopped me from opening my mouth!)but the situation in the ATL is different than what you are reporting, at least in some areas.(Some are still all white, others all black) I big chunk of the suburbs are racially mixed. I AM the minority here where I live . I have mentioned before that my neighborhood is something like 60-70 percent black. I have gone into the local Kroger and been the only white person in the store....I am sure some on the left would be shocked, just shocked to find this doesn't bother me, but it really doesn't. If it did, I would move. Clearly a few neighbors were bothered and left dodge though. I also drive old Caddys and Buicks, so there is lots and lots of car talk going on between black guys(Why women rarely like old cars is as big a mystery to me as why they also rarely like jazz) and myself. If they are truly car nuts, or have a classic car, I tell them about the cruise ins around town, which still are fairly white, but you do see more blacks coming to them, which I did not see 10 years ago, for the most part. I don't care what anyone says, there really is not much of a jazz scene in Atlanta, so can't comment on the music scene. Wish there was one, seems back in the 80's there was.... When I did go to concerts, they were of the heavy metal kind, and they truly were lily white, though I did see one black kid at one concert, once! I also date a black girl at work a few years back, not because she was black, but because I liked her. All of her friends though were white, which does make you wonder.... so the solution for you all is to move to Atlanta! We have it all figured out.... -
ebay craziness redux - the return
BERIGAN replied to kulu se mama's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It's just your bad luck! Seriously, I have had that kind of bad luck with the soundtrack to the film Major League. I would see it garner 50-60 bucks, and I found it used twice at different Wherehouse music stores, and each time was counting on getting fistfuls of dollars, and got 9.99 and 15 for it instead. I do feel that even though I hate reserves, it might be worth it for cds that can be worth some bread. Also, if you ever find something that should bring in big bucks, check the completed auctions to see what categories folks used to get the big bucks(Obviously, Duke should go in jazz, but perhaps someone just used-cds "other") and check out their counters also if they had them. If only 10-12 people checked out an auction during a 7 day run, there may not be that many fans, and better to use the reserve thing....just checked completed auctions, you weren't kidding you do have good(and lots of) feedback! Didn't mean to talk to you like someone with a feedback of 20! I think RDK might be right about not having photos, you can always, ummm, borrow photos if allmusic or Amazon has a shot of the cover if you don't have a scanner. I also noticed the guy who got $ 127 put the cd in two categories R&B as well, and got 117 views, and someone else who got 34.99 with buy it now only had around 40 hits in 6 days......interesting...too bad you didn't get more! -

underrated or personal fave film noirs
BERIGAN replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Ghost, I haven't seen The Big Steal, but you mentioned OUT OF THE PAST, and that is very good, IMO. Perfect for folks who think old films always have happy endings. And Damn, Jane Greer was no plain Jane! Just caught a part of the film again a few weeks back, and was just struck by how beautiful she was, wonder why she didn't go on to be a bigger star? Photos don't really do her justice but here is one anyway Anyway, another Noir that is very good is Crossfire, with Robert Young, Mitchum(Is there a trend here?) and the very underrated Robert Ryan....Edward Dmytryk directed, and it was one of the few films to deal with anti-semitism...and Gloria Grahame is in it...how can you go wrong??? -
Guys...explain something to me....I have this set on pre-order from Cduniverse...they and amazon show a May 27th release date, yet Ghost got it thru Oracle a while back and it has been on worldsrecords.com site for a while as well...a shorter timeframe Mosaic select kind of thing????

I guess you have the newly restored edition from Kino? Also, TCM is going to run this version in late May.... http://www.tcm.turner.com/ThisMonth/Articl...4;25817,00.html

So I was wasting time....I mean, doing valuable jazz research, and stumbled across this cd at http://www.timelessjazz.com/ >link to this cd< here is the really big scan of the front of the cd... Ok...I looked at the track listings with very tired eyes...I don't see what they are on! Anyone know what tracks they may be on???? Thanks!

Well, those TV specials were pretty lame, and it is too bad, cuz I have seen outtakes from them, and when someone screwed up, he had a better lines than were ever said in the specials...things like that fascinate me! Why not just get better writers? The Woody Allen Documentary that ran last year on TCM, Allen again went out of his way to say how much he "ripped off" Hope, and they showed clips that proved his point...never noticed that before! Mr. Moose,If you ever are really bored, and want to see if you can take Hope in films, check out Son of Paleface, directed by Frank Tashlin (He directed Warner Bros Cartoons in the 40's) or the 1940 film The Ghost Breakers (If you can get past Willie Best's slightly smarter Stepin Fetchit impression)1944s' Princess and the Pirate, Caught in the Draft has it's moments, as do the Road pictures, but they vary greatly, and I just can't remember which are the good ones right now, dammit! He and Crosby were the first to talk directly to the camera, I believe...It is interesting that he became so popular playing an almost total coward most of the time in films! I dug around allmovie.com to see what I might have forgotten, and saw a film called...."Let's Face It" from 1943, also starring Betty Hutton, based on a Broadway play...they give it 4 stars, and I have never, ever heard of it! Not on video ever it appears, wonder if it is tied up for some legal reasons...anyone know????

Alexander, you have to remember this song from 1983!...And Weizen, best group from San Fran ever??? THE TUBES She's A Beauty Step right up and don't be shy Because you will not believe your eyes She's right here, behind the glass You're gonna like her, 'cause she's got class You can look inside another world You get to talk to a pretty girl She's everything you dream about... But don't fall in love She's a beauty She's one in a million girls She's a beauty Why would I lie Why would I lie? You can say anything you like But you can't touch the merchandise She'll give you ev'ry penny's worth But it will cost you a dollar first You can step outside your little world [step outside] You can talk to a pretty girl She's everything you dream about But don't fall in love She's a beauty She's one in a million girls One in a million girls Why would I lie Why would I lie? But don't fall in love If you do you'll find out you're gonna lose She's one in a million girls One in a million girls Why would I lie Now why would I lie? Step outside your world... But don't fall in love She's a beauty She's one in a million girls One in a million girls Why would I lie Now why would I lie? But don't fall in love If you do you'll find out you're gonna lose She's one in a million girls One in a million girls Why would I lie Now why would I lie? But don't fall in love She's a beauty She's one in a million girls One in a million girls Why would I lie Now why would I lie?

Ghost, that is interesting! Bozy is mentioned from time to time in the book you will get thru, eventually! I don't need to find out any more tracks he is not on...I saw that the Jack Purvis set has a Boswell sisters song that was always credited to Berigan (It's the Girl?) 600 tracks that he is not on? I had heard Berigan was on around 600 tracks total...will be interesting to see if that number goes up, or down! I can tell him most of the time with an open horn, but a few tracks muted I have heard I could not swear it was him....I have read that Manny Klein was confused with him sometimes but Manny seems to play more NPM's (notes per minute ) so I can spot him...Purvis fooled me though...

Have Mosaic or BN Sales Been Hurt?
BERIGAN replied to Leeway's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, we will never know cuz Norah has increased sales so much, that the microscopic sales of jazz cd dropping another 5-10% , well no one will even notice that. I didn't want to go out of my way to punish Mosaic as well, but I was going to ask for a Venuti-Lang in mid March for my B-day but the board thing left such a bad taste in my mouth I didn't....Take that Blue Note! -
When Epic issued these on lp they cut out the Chick Bullock vocals (not a bad idea). Classics reissued these versions in their Berigan series, but issued the complete versions in the set called "Complementary Tracks". Hey, lay of the Chickster man! He's no Irving Kaufman! And the white of one of his eyes turned black, just before he was to go to hollywood, how weird is that? I also read in the New Grove Dictonary of Jazz that he was on 3000 recordings!!!! Do yo think they meant to say 300? Chuck, you did answer a question I had on the AAJ about why Chick was listed as being on many of the tracks, but the songs had no vocals! Thanks!
