  1. I agree, a great "little" label! I am into more creaky jazz, but last year cduniverse.com had just incredible prices for these sets! Had a couple of their compilation sets, so felt safe in grabbing a few that were around 17 bucks each.(Perhaps they just started carrying them around that time?) I had wanted to hear more Fats Navarro-Fats Navarro Story(the only box set on him I believe). Liked it and the very nice booklet, so over the next few months, I grabbed Sidney Bechet Story ,Gene Krupa Story , Woody Herman Story ,Stan Kenton Story, Billie Holiday :The Lady Sings, Anita O'Day : Young Anita, Jo Stafford :Yes Indeed! Charlie Ventura: Bop For The People,(with the Pasadena concert from 1949) and Like I mentioned, they have a few really nice compilation sets, Engine Room(Drums) Doughboys, Playboys & Cowboys...Western Swing (very highly recommended, I or someone else needs to start a thread on Western Swing)Hittin' On All Six: History Of Jazz Guitar(Couldn't find it listed under Proper label on Cduniverse, their proper listings are a mess, try by titles, or click on every Proper heading if you search by label!) Cduniverse seems to have as good a price as deepdiscountcd.com has, which is a bit of a surprise. Proper is also putting out 2 cd sets like..Tiny Bradshaw : Breakin' Up The House . I even got a cheap Sidney Bechet cd at Borders a few years back for 8-9 bucks, and few of the tracks are on the 4 cd set! Sound is not quite up to Mosaic, but still pretty darn good. Like Brad mentioned, a Johnny Hodges set is coming out May 13th, along with a Mildred Bailey set, and a Milton Brown-all $16.79 since they are new....I don't think anything has been proven with ripping off Mosaic, fingers were pointed at one point, then someone remembered it was the Definitive label from Spain that seems to do that...Hope this Bailey set doesn't prove to be ripped off from Mosaic, cuz I really like this label! Proper can now feel free to send me the sets I didn't mention(Or Own) for this glowing review!
  2. You know who EVERYONE forgets? Cy Young...I mean, 511 wins, you gotta be pretty good to do that.....its cuz he played some in the 19th century, right? so unfair
  3. Michael is the greatest basketball player ever, but the athlete of the last century was Babe Ruth.......
  4. surely?.... ! How ever did I miss that one? or should I say (o) (o) ?
  5. NOW IT'S M'SOFT By TIM ARANGO and ERICA COPULSKY -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 12, 2003 -- Microsoft has expressed interest in buying Vivendi's Universal Music Group, setting up a possible bidding war between the software maker and rival Apple Computer, according to sources familiar with the matter. Microsoft's interest is said to be at the level of "poking around, kicking the tires," but it has indeed had conversations with Vivendi executives about buying the music division, sources said. The unit is the world's largest record company. The music and technology worlds were abuzz yesterday after a published report revealed that Apple, and its technology maven CEO Steve Jobs, is weighing a bid for Universal Music. For some in the beleaguered music industry - which has seen compact disc sales plummet in recent years due to rampant piracy - the prospect of a tech giant like Apple or Microsoft delving into the music business is an affirmation that it is possible to make digital downloading profitable. "It would be a great shot in the arm for the music industry," one music industry insider said. Another industry veteran said, "It's wonderful when someone like Steve Jobs - who is generally viewed as a visionary and a futurist - has a genuine interest in music as an investment at a time when everyone is running scared from the music business." Jobs began meeting with Vivendi officials last October about possibly investing in Universal Music, according to sources familiar with the matter. While he initially considered buying just a piece of the business, he has now decided he wants to buy the entire division, sources say. These people say the deal is a long shot, but Jobs is likely to submit a bid worth between $5 billion and $6 billion. Vivendi has said it hopes to raise at least $7 billion from asset sales this year. A bid at such a price would be an admission that the value of the business has fallen sharply in recent years. Universal Music was cobbled together from several investments over recent years, with the total invested far greater than $6 billion. In 1995, Seagram - which was eventually bought by Vivendi - purchased record label MCA for $2 billion. Later, in 1998, it bought PolyGram for almost $11 billion. Universal Music may be too big a bite for Apple to take on its own. With Apple's market value at just under $5 billion, sources say the company will likely have to bring in private equity firms to back its deal. Apple has held talks with firms Thomas H. Lee Partners, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Blackstone Group about making a strategic investment in the computer maker to help finance its deal. But even with help from the buyout firms, sources say it will still be tough for Apple to buy the entire unit. Apple's interest is said to be stronger than Microsoft's - but Microsoft might intensify its interest as an April 29 Vivendi board meeting approaches. At that meeting, Vivendi is expected to weigh a variety of proposals for selling its U.S. entertainment assets, which include a movie studio, theme parks and television properties. Representatives of Universal Music and Vivendi declined comment. Spokespersons for Apple and Microsoft did not return calls seeking comment. The only other known bidder for Universal Music is an investment group led by billionaire oilman Marvin Davis. This group is bidding close to $15 billion for a majority stake in Vivendi's entire entertainment division, and reportedly will withdraw from the process if the music unit is sold to another party. Representatives for Davis declined comment. http://www.nypost.com/business/33958.htm
  6. Well, RDK put it best, butt... From what I saw,(Last hour) it was not bad...funny, when they showed some ladies in pre-op for boob jobs, you saw their nipples, but when they showed footage of strippers, they fuzzed them out! Plus, they showed a woman who makes a martini-shaken-not stirred, in her too ample cleavage, for her burlesque act A high water mark for the History Channel, IMO Now, if they will just do a docu on the History of Booty shaking.....
  7. Are you seriously suggesting that you're not interested in cleavage? I guess if you are always playing with organs, you lose interest............
  8. Some day, I am gonna punch you right in the kisser for saying that!!!! I still won't believe it till it is in black in white on the site!!! Y'all just don't know my luck! Glad to see it is looking like it will make it! Only 7 discs???
  9. It's not even sweeps month! It's been swell!!!!! Gotta go!
  10. Al, you are correct in that the Tower Closed down at its old location, it is now a mile south on Peachtree in a strip mall(I am sure Buckhead folks would hate me calling it a strip mall! ) with a LA fitness....its a bigger store than before, but mainly for the used stuff....pretty cool....
  11. Not Really! Right outside of the airport area, is well, nothing! No cd stores of any kind. I guess it depends how much time you have, and how far you want to go. Wuxtry has a fair bit of vinyl jazz, not cheap...I think a few months back they had the Tina Brooks Mosaic on lp, but you could get it cheaper on ebay....they have cds of course, you have to flip thru booklets, they don't have room for the cds in their racks.... here is a link to them http://www.wuxtryrecords.com/main.html Tower records in Buckhead (3232 peachtree road) has some cool jazz cds in their used cd section ...cd Merchants a few miles away (3655 Roswell Road) has a pretty nice selection as well. But I don't know if any are worth going way out of your way for, you might find one or 2 cds, but if you were hoping to walk out with fistfuls of cds, you might be disappointed...if Vinyl is a big deal to you, it might be worth it of course...tower is even getting into vinyl, more rock than jazz, but it is growing....why did you mention Stone Mountain, anyway??? There is a wherehouse that is not going out of business there, and a Borders, a Media play, and thats about it...sorry!
  12. From everything I have heard, Griffey has been working out very hard the last few years...the clip I saw showed Griffey going all out, leaping into the air, and landing on his right shoulder, his glove arm, on the inside of his shoulder(If that makes sense)and it looked like he rolled the arm under his body in a VERY unnatural way...Sad...I would rather see him have the all time home run record someday, but it won't happen if he keeps missing such huge chunks of seasons
  13. No, "we" somehow won a game...The smart folks and Time-warner/Aol who have helped steer the team into Kevin Millwood for a 3rd string catcher (back in the Minors) also thought the team of Pete Van Wieren and Skip Carey, who have broadcast games for 28 years on TBS/and or on the radio, were, get this...homers(DUH!) and that they shouldn't be on TBS anymore! Just sports south cable for 30-40 games. I am sure people like me who have watched TBS braves games since I lived in Jacksonville, when they were forever mired in last place, are so glad they have protected us from announcers that root for the home team (Not that Joe Simpson and Don Sutton don't, but I guess they could be arm-twisted into toning it down, more easily than the "old guys") Gee, where is Time/Warner based out of, anyway? They got Tom Glavine, they should have grabbed Milwood as well, but that might have been too suspicious...but the Braves are much weaker, and seem to be almost without offense (Except for the game last night) so the Mets will only have to worry about Philly-hey, 4 games into the season, tells you a lot!
  14. Ghost, if there are not too much electronic gizmos at your workplace, a really good am radio (Like a Sangean radio?) will pick up many far away stations, we can get most of the NY stations here in the ATL..... Where we always drop it like its hot... :rsmile: Braves will not win 90 games this year, by the by
  15. "Tank heevan, for lettal Girls" She is now old enough to drink...wasn't old enough to smoke in the sink photo! She breaks my usual iron clad age rule

Yeah but that was alright She was hotter than the sun but she just wasn't that bright My mistake she was more flaky than a leper colony I think a wooden clothespin would have been much better company Ass like a donkey acting funky gave her "L" now she's a flunky So my love for her died quicker than a batch of Sea Monkeys Early bird gets the worm spread your legs or spread the word So what if I'm not the smartest peanut in the turd I'm white which goes with everything but I can come in any color And I'm looking for the kind of girl that reminds me of my mother But it's hard to find a girl with a viper tattooed on her tushy And how many girls do you know that can play the harmonica with their pussies? 18. Big Al touched on it...their music is the essence of simplicity, and yet....it doesn't seem boring, like listening to the Ramones(Sorry! I like a few of their songs a lot, but a whole album....) There is just a ton of energy in their recordings, you can tell they just flat out like to rock! I came to them late, wasn't all that impressed with what I had heard(Just a few songs) until I heard "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" come across my radio in the Mid 80's (Imagine turning away from some crap Milli Vanilli track and hearing this! ) Just read at Allmusic about Dirty Deeds Originally released in 1975, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap did not hit the U.S. until 1981 I grew to love Bon Scott's singing more than Brian Johnson, but still liked them. Plus, how can you not like a group with two songs with balls in the title? (SHE'S GOT BALLS, and BIG BALLS) And, though I did not hear but two tracks off of their last cd, Stiff Upper Lip, one track Satellite Blues, sounded as good as anything they ever did IMO. For all the jazz snobs here,(Jazzmoose, shame!) some non-snobbish lyrics for ya! I'm [ever | rather] upper class high society God's gift to ballroom notoriety I always fill my ballroom The event is never small The social pages say I've got The biggest balls of all CHORUS: I've got big balls I've got big balls And they're such big balls Dirty big balls And he's got big balls And she's got big balls But we've got the biggest balls of them all And my balls are always bouncing My ballroom always full And everybody cums and cums again If your name is on the guest list No one can take you higher Everybody says I've got Great balls of fire CHORUS Some balls are held for charity And some for fancy dress But when they're held for pleasure They're the balls that I like best My balls are always bouncing To the left and to the right It's my belief that my big balls Should be held every night CHORUS And I'm just itching to tell you about them Oh we had such wonderful fun Seafood cocktail, crabs, crayfish... Ball sucker
  19. Sharkey Bonano? Never heard of the dude! Learn something new everyday! (thought it might be Sonny Bono's real name....) http://store6.yimg.com/I/jukejoint_1724_82935543 HMMMM can't show actual photo, board software said....You are not allowed to use that image extension on this board.
  20. Oh, I don't know, I guess I would rather say to folks I am number one, not a number two!
  21. Ok. I blame a crappy job, and being tired, not a lack of jazz knowledge! So I go into tower records, after working till 11 pm, with not much money in my pocket a few years ago(unlike today when I go in there with not much money in my pocket) Anyway, I saw a Johnny Hodges cd for sale, 7.99, 8.99 tops, from RCA. I think, it was this cd In a Mellow Tone (I can't find the cover of this cd on the web) Then, my brain decides to fill in what I think I have read. Johnny Hodges with Wild Bill Davison! Cool! Cool Alto, with Hot Cornet! I have never heard of this record before! Wonder how well they work together??? So, I buy it, and put it on...hmmmm.....I hear Hodges, but where is Wild Bill? All I hear is this damn Organist!!! (If saying this doesn't get me thrown off the board, nothing will! ) Next track, no Wild Bill Davison! So, I start looking thru the liner notes...Wild Bill Davis! On Organ!!! D'oh! indeed! I probably didn't give the cd a fair chance after that..I sold it soon afterwards...It's like expecting ice cream, and getting Orange Juice..you may like both, but if you wanted some Ice Cream now... Anyway, I learned something. There should be a law against two artists having virtually the same name ( or the same name, Bill Evans?) So....bare your soul today, admit your musical sins....
  22. Be the first member on your own board??? Seriously, was there a problem the first time around, or what??? A lottery?
  23. Can anyone believe that this board has only been around less than 3 weeks????? Doesn't it seem like it has been up for months? Relax! Politics will die down...if folks turn off the news for a few hours, and play some jazz, ideas will come back!
  24. reminds me of the Kentucky Fried Chicken Movie's "Danger Seeker." It is better to be prepared!! "It's been said that the test of a man's courage is how performs in the face of danger. Well, in the next half hour, you're gonna meet a very unique breed of cat. The kind of man who doesn't know the meaning of the word fear. Rex Kramer, part-time airline mechanic, full-time daredevil. A man willing to risk his life for the sake of adventure. He has to chase it, confront it, and whip it. Rex Kramer, Danger Seeker." I forget, what did he say, anyway???
