Thanks, I had completely forgotten that connection. Oh well, at least he's still collecting jazz CDs....

From a machine translation of that article: I wonder how it's going with that. A number of OOP titles were reprinted quite some time ago, but has anything happened since then? By the way, even new Classics titles seem to be poorly distributed, unfortunately.

With the sad state Verve is in you can forget about any expanded reissue. Perhaps a Mosaic Single might be an idea, but the Getz estate problem would have to be solved first, and if it were, would Verve lease a big name like Getz? It's worth mentioning here too that Verve reissued Reflections in 2003 as a straight LP reissue, without any of the four outtakes that exist from the same sessions. It was in the LPR series, and heck, even that series is discontinued now. As for mystery sessions for Verve, Getz made three of those in February 1961. The third of them is a full session with Scott LaFaro, just a few months before his death, as well as half of what had been the early John Coltrane Quartet (Steve Kuhn & Pete LaRoca). How's that for a session? Only one track has turned up on a compilation. RCA Jazz Classics German re-issues series list?
Swinging Swede replied to bakeostrin's topic in Discography
Yes, there was another RCA album, Strictly Powell, which predated Swingin' With Bud. I haven't seen a RVJC (AFLA ) release of it, although that doesn't necessarily rule out anything as we see. There have in any case been other CD reissues of it. -
RCA Jazz Classics German re-issues series list?
Swinging Swede replied to bakeostrin's topic in Discography
Thanks for the addition; I've updated the list! I remember seeing almost all the 1993-94 releases in stores, but for some reason I saw very few of the 1995-96 releases, and the Winding/Johnson was one title I didn't even know existed until this thread, as was the Nat Pierce Baker mentioned. Incidentally the catalogue number of the Winding/Johnson is not close to any of the other releases. One wonders if there is more? -
RCA Jazz Classics German re-issues series list?
Swinging Swede replied to bakeostrin's topic in Discography
That was a great series! The majority of what was released had not been on CD before, and we got original album covers and liner notes in a fold-out, complete discographies, and in some cases bonus tracks. The reissues are listed as produced by ”Rolf Enoch/proJAZZteam”, and whoever he/they was/were, this series was very well done. It seems to have run 1993-96. Maybe it came to an end because many of the titles weren’t big sellers, but at least they weren’t the same old hackneyed titles being reissued over and over again, as often has been the case with the majors. I picked up many of the releases I saw in stores, but since this was in the pre-Internet days, I didn’t know about any titles I didn’t see, and some I’ve only learned about later. Below is a list I have compiled, which may not be quite complete, though. There are some gaps in the catalogue numbers (although that does not in itself mean that there is a missing release), and the 1995 titles are fewer than for the other years and disconnected catalogue-wise, so maybe there’s.more. Please feel free to make additions or corrections to the list. With our combined efforts we can probably make it complete (if it isn’t already). Ellington 1941 transcriptions: Amazon marketplace bargain
Swinging Swede replied to bluesbro's topic in Recommendations
I think 16 of the 29 tracks were not recorded commercially by Ellington, so that's a big reason in itself to get it. And it's by the Blanton-Webster band. Nuff said. 26 of the 29 tracks were previously out on a Vintage Jazz Classics single CD. The Soundies set is a double CD with all the tracks, but I must say that the sound is very different on the two releases. I couldn't decide which one I preferred though. -
Blue Note alternate takes discography

Perhaps JSngry is talking about this session: Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers Lee Morgan (tp) Hank Mobley (ts) Bobby Timmons (p) Jymie Merritt (b) Art Blakey (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ, March 8, 1959 tk.5 Jimerick Blue Note rejected tk.10 Quick Trick - tk.14 Hipsippy Blues - tk.15 M And M - tk.19 Close Your Eyes - tk.21 Just Foolin' - This is one of those sessions about which one wonders how bad it really can be. It should be made available as a download at least. -
Update: I looked around and there is a Collectables CD from 2005, which has all King recordings except four. The good news is that those four tunes are different from the four tunes missing from the Charly CD. This means that if you buy both CDs you will have all the King tunes. If the Collectables CD has the master takes, it also means that the only thing you will be missing is the master take of Old Spice (the Charly CD has an alternate).

Excellent decision! Lucky Millinder had a great band. I'm particulary fond of the 1941-42 recordings. Some of those tracks are among the best big band sides ever laid down, for example Apollo Jump, Savoy and two tracks featuring Dizzy Gillespie: Mason Flyer and Little John Special, the latter using the 'Salt Peanuts' riff just three days before the regrettable recording ban started. There are also gospelish tracks, some featuring Sister Rosetta Tharpe. As the 40s went on the band became more R&B-ish of course. As for the 1951-55 King recordings no Classics CD exists, yet anyway. The latest volume, from 2001, says "To be continued..." so one was probably planned, but the release pace is very slow these days, and the label's future uncertain, so who knows whether the fourth volume ever will materialize? If Jaffa were here, he might be able to say something about it. There is however an OOP Charly CD, which shouldn't be too hard to find, called Ram-Bunk-Shush, that has 16 of the 20 1951-55 tunes, although some of them are alternate takes of the originally released versions. When you say 24 tracks, you are counting alternate takes also, right? The Charly CD is in any case currently the best choice I'm aware of for the 1951-55 recordings.

jazz musicians really suck
Swinging Swede replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I read some time ago that Charlie Parker showed great talent the first time he was on a golf-course. He was supposedly good at doing quick magical tricks with his hands too. Apparently he was born with an unusually good limb control, which is part of the reason he became such an extraordinary saxophonist. I find that to be a fascinating aspect of Bird. I think I read about this in some liner notes, but probably not to a Parker CD. Does anyone recognize the golf story and know from where it comes? Speaking of Kenny G and Bird, who can forget the following quote: "Charlie Parker would squeak a lot, and that's why they called him Bird, because his reed would chirp."
