  3. In science classes? Well, put the Spaghetti Monster theory there too, then.
  4. I had never seen this album cover before: Ernestine Anderson - Never Make Your Move Too Soon Btw, that position is impossible. And what is the queen doing anyway?
  5. Long Island Sound! Actually, ubu, you might also want to get Getz's Savoy and Sittin' In With sessions, to complete the picture of early Stan. One way of doing that is to get the first Classics volume, 1946-1949.
  6. Yes, if it's already remastered and ready, as it is rumoured to be, it should not be too difficult for Sony and Mosaic to make a deal, one would think.
  7. Or Start > Run > type "charmap" > OK (You only need to type "charmap" the first time. Next time it will be one of the options.) By the way, the Danes have the letters in the wrong order. It should of course be å, ä, ö.
  8. Kenny G has a new album out. I know this because the last time I surfed to AMG, a sound ad started to play automatically in a pop-over window.
  9. even though no one answered this question - i seem to remember this being the case. That was where he first heard this Newport set, but he then found out that Columbia recorded the entire festival (in stereo), so the CD is mastered from tapes in the Columbia vaults.
  10. From the Morelia/Linares super tournament, which started yesterday: "A fan watches Magnus Carlsen fill out his scoresheet."
  11. Reminded me of the following video: The contestants are asked to name a country that starts with the letter 'A'. One says "Asia", one says nothing, and one says "Amsterdam"...
  12. The video has been viewed 5 million times. It has to be seen to be believed. Is Europe a country? The question is "Budapest is the capital of what European country?", and here are some excerpts of what the American Idol participant has to say about it: "I thought Europe was a country!" "Budapest? I haven't even heard of that." "I know they speak French there. Don't they?" "Is France a country?" "Hungry? That's a country? I've heard of Turkey, but Hungry, never heard of it!"
  13. Dexter Gordon, baritone (in 1952) Budd Johnson, alto Eddie Miller, alto
  14. The CD has a fourth previously unissued tune (13 minutes long), so that is an additional reason to track it down. By the way, the Marlena Shaw at Montreux has been out on CD in Japan.
  15. Bird also played tenor on Miles' first leader session for Savoy in 1947, and on the so called Redcross recordings from 1943.
  16. The line can be difficult to draw sometimes, but in the case of Ventura I think it is safe to say that tenor was his main axe. Add alto to his instruments, btw.
  17. McLean plays tenor on the title track on A Long Drink Of The Blues. A couple more: Sidney Bechet played tenor sax on his one man band recording. Charlie Ventura, soprano & baritone
  18. Jackie McLean, tenor Benny Carter, tenor Johnny Hodges, soprano Charlie Barnet, soprano Jimmy Heath, alto (if it counts as switching; I think it was his main instrument in the early years) Doesn't Coleman Hawkins take a baritone or bass sax solo on a Fletcher Henderson recording? I think he does, although I can't remember on what tune. There is one recorded solo of Chu Berry playing the baritone sax too.
  19. And what if the performer is long dead and gone and the record company is unwilling to reissue the recording? There are not that many performers who will be around say 80 years after the recording was made.
  20. Will this be retroactive? In other words, will recordings that already have entered public domain be protected again, or will it only affect recordings that still are copyrighted? If the former, it will dramatically change the European reissue scene, since even the earliest ODJB recordings then won't reenter public domain until 2013. It will not affect online piracy, though...
  21. Düsseldorf, 1st April 1960 (and that is not a joke!). It was supposed to be a Miles Davis Quintet set, but for some reason Miles didn't show up, so Coltrane performed as the sole horn with the rhythm section. This was part of a Jazz At The Philharmonic tour, and perhaps to compensate for Miles's absence, Getz joined the group at the end for two numbers and Peterson replaced Wynton Kelly for one.
  22. Zombie Mosaics! Beware, they will get up at night and eat your brain!
  23. This one? How can we lobby to get Rare Grooves back?
