  1. What about Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, and Hud? ... all great performances and I am sure I am forgetting others. Too bad he got the Oscar for a crappy film.
  2. Happy Birthday Larry Kart
  3. I saw this and enjoyed it but must say I was very disappointed there was no mention of Atlantic's jazz releases. I realize that jazz was more of Nesuhi's department, but still the title of the program was Atlantic Records: the house that Ahment built. TO say nothing of the Atlantic jazz releases was a bummer, especially since the program did cover what big jazz fans both Ahmet and Nesuhi were.
  4. Has anyone seen this or does anyone know anything about it?
  5. I have not seen the film, but thought I would "recommend" it here because it looks interesting and I have seen no films about this legendary school. It is a documentary on the "school" that was set up in Lenox Massachussetts every summer beginning in 1951 basically for jazz musicians. I think I have read that John Lewis of MJQ was associated with this and that one summer Ornette Coleman made a big splash there. may want to check details at www.tribecafilmfest.org
  6. I just remembered a little story about Andrew Hill that you may find amusing. Although I saw him in performance about a dozen or so times, I never really felt comfortable approaching him at a gig. However, one day, probably 10 or 15 years ago, I was at the J&R cd store in Manhattan and who should I see but Andrew Hill. Andrew was kneeling down attempting to get a copy of the Village Voice from a bundle of papers that had a cord or something holding it together- it had yet to be opened so to speak. He was furiously attempting to break the cord with his fingers which to my eyes were about to become bloody or worse. I said "Excuse me, Mr. Hill, but would you mind letting me open that for you, I wouldn't want anything to happen to those fingers." He looked at me with a big grin and seemed surprised that I recognized him. I handed him a Voice and told him I was a big fan - he thanked me and went along his way.
  7. I like this one a lot. Amazing for a debut release and just very good playing and compositions.
  8. Includes obi strip $20.00 US delivered, insured to a US address.
  9. devastating news. Thanks, Andrew for your great music. Makes me glad I saw that concert at Trinity Church here in Manhattan just a few short weeks ago.
  10. That's a good album. The way he plays on Take the Coltrane is pretty incredible. I think at that time John was playing that Johnny Smith jazz box with some chorus and whatever amp was around. I could be wrong on that, though. I think it is a good album, but I just dislike his guitar tone on this record- sounds very synthetic to me. I miss the guitar sound.
  11. thanks everyone for your advice!!
  12. For years, I have used the services of cable tv without using the cable box, because I don't wan't all those premium channels etc., I just want better reception, living as I do in an apartment. Recently however, I have begun to get a rather "snowy" picture (some interference is going on) on the channels which are lower numbers (2-9) while the higher channels appear to be better or fine. A construction project is going on nearby but the problems persists into the evening after the construction appears to be over. Anyone had this experience or have any suggestions? I dislike the idea of being forced to get and pay for the box when I won't be using all that it offers.
  13. Adam I watched it and found it to be excellent: very moving, informative and fair.
  14. Ok, I just picked this one up and have been enjoying it. Have to agree with others that it is similar to other recordings by this trio and breaks no new ground, nevertheless a solid release and I am digging it.
  15. Thanks, I was just wondering about whether to upgrade some of the K2s....Tenor Madness being one of them. sure, but of course, what sounds right to me may be different for you, so I am not suggesting you not get the RVG.
  16. I have bought a few of these which I consider to be definite upgrades over the 20 bit K2s, however, one standout exception for me was Tenor Madness where I thought the RVG sound was rather harsh and I decided to keep the K2.
  17. anyone heard this one yet? give us your reviews!
  18. In truth Rod wrote a lot of great songs in his early career, so you are very wrong to say "never wrote anything". The rest of your message I agree with.
  19. Power to the People is a studio album, not a concert. Guy The live album is "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem". I didnt know there were extra tracks from that. Like to hear them all on one CD - or two even. MG MG I believe that all of the extra tracks from the box were included in the single cd reissue of the live album when it came out as a single.
  20. If you are talking the Joe Henderson Milestone box, of course that box had many more releases than Power to the People on it. I no longer have that box, but I do not think it contained any more tracks than were on the original Power to the People album.
  21. I picked up Power to the People and I do find it sonically superior to the Milestone box and to the Italian single cd issue. However, it is annoying that since Keepnews in the liners said, I think, this series of reissues was about givng you all the art work, etc. from the original albums, I note that they left out the photographs from the centerfold of the lp and from the back cover, which the Italians gave us. anybody want to buy the Italian version?
  22. does anyone know if the June 2007 connoisseurs are still on target for release?
  23. watched the DVD last night and this film rather substantially changes the book. That is not a bad thing per se unless you are attached to a book - you just accept that they are different animals. My general impression of the film on its own was not so positive, again perhaps because I have read the book, because much of what is explained in the book is left rather vague in the film - too much seems to be happening that did not make sense to me.
  24. I was there too, Frank. I can't add anything to your great description of this wonderful concert. I too, was a little upset at how thin and frail he looks, but I was prepared for it, given what I have been hearing about his health, but as you said, the music did not seem to suffer from his physical condition... and that's the good part.
  25. I have read this book quite recently. However, from what I have heard about the film, the film emphasizes points that I felt were not so emphasized in the book and I believe the NY Times review indicates that there were significant alterations in the plot and meanings.
