  1. Someday, I hope to have the opportunity to hear them too. I love duos, and this one is worth hearing, to be sure.
  2. I've had significant hearing loss across the full spectrum. I really can't listen to louspeakers any more, and so found myself gravitating to headphones a decade ago. Loudspeakers simply sound "hollow" to me - no lows, no highs, and midrange like it's in a cardboard box. Car speakers - commonly "hyped up" actually sound better. But headphones - while they don't sound great - I can handle with relatively "flat" (frequency) performance. I can't scientifically explain any of this, and I really haven't approached disagnosis, from a music appreciation standpoint, scientifically.
  3. Several other sources report that Red Holloway has passed. If true, a sad loss.
  4. I'm about eleventeen pages deep into the thread thinking "What? No mention of...?" Finally. Nonaah. Okay, it's Chuck recommending something he played a role in creating and selling, but a solid recording worthy of broader awareness and acclaim. Not just Mr. Nessa blowing his own tooter.
  5. I suppose you've already deduced the big news: Allen Lowe has found an endless supply of closets to come out of. All that door slamming!
  6. 15% off online orders. Just two days. ENTER PROMO CODE mardigras15 AT CHECKOUT (Discount valid through 02/22)
  7. As mentioned in my original post, I dare not listen at the link from work. But I can't help wondering: does it sound like Keith Jarrett?
  8. From MSN A UK radio station has apologized after a Saturday evening broadcast was interrupted by the soundtrack of an X-rated film. The five minutes of graphic moans and grunts could be heard during Jazz FM's "Funky Sensation" program. "There was unauthorized activity and behavior in the studio which we take very seriously," program director Mike Vitti told RadioToday. "We will be taking the appropriate disciplinary action against the individual concerned." A "clip" is available at RadioFail. (I'm on my work computer, so I didn't test the link.)
  9. I'll join the chorus and sing out: "Welcome Back".
  10. Have a great birthday, Hans.
  11. No, not when you can have analog (LP, tape or whatever). Analog gives you the "whole show", not a sample (CD) or a sampled sample (MP3). And compatible/retrievable as far into the future as we can see. When we send those recordings into space for aliens to retrieve, what do we send? Still, I'd rather have Red Book CD than MP3, et cetera.
  12. I'll join the chorus in singing "Happy Birthday"
  13. Re-reading my original post, I sound like the crotchety old man who "walked ten miles to school and back, uphill both directions"...in the "good old days". And "kids these days..." I'm my grandfather. Anyway, turns out this is another kickstarter-funded operation (to some extent, anyway.) http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/benmeadors/the-new-face-of-vinyl-youths-digital-devolution
  14. I'm not personally "caught up" in the vinyl renaissance. I've had my 10,000 LPs, 45s, 78s (acetate, I know), since before the resurgence/fad started, but I do find it interesting all the same. http://www.benmeadors.com/vinyl/ Seeking 15-25 year olds:http://www.benmeadors.com/vinyl/the-new-face-of-vinyl-survey/
  15. I'm a few hours early, but I'll be the first to remind Vic that, once again, it's his birthday. All the best!
  16. If there's someone you love, be sure to tell him or her. Everyday. Today especially. Someday you might not be able to say it. This is really a note to myself, but it's so important, I had to post it.
  17. I never met him, but heard him a few times in concert. And he showed up on a bunch of records I enjoyed. So thanks and reast peacefully.
  18. LA Jazz used to have a newspaper available in record stores throughout the Southland, but I haven't seen it lately. It wasn't really much for outside the mainstream. In fact, it had a bias toward jazz/pop vocals. But give 'em credit, lots of local talent.
  19. A couple of resources I've bookmarked for my quarterly-or-so trips: http://www.lajazz.com/index.cfm - news, calendar, links http://www.catalinajazzclub.com/ - major jazz venue http://www.jazzandblues.org/index.aspx http://www.jazzbakery.org/ http://www.jazzandblues.org/index.aspx - radio station with more local info Locals (Ray?) should have more ideas.
  20. Google Ad: Stop Bleeding Gums Marin dentist specializing in non- invasive treatment of gum disease.
  21. That's two of us. My Grado SR80s aren't all that comfortable, but with all my traveling, headphones are really my only option. (I wonder how many people here understand the reference to Pantani?!)
  22. On one level, I wouldn't argue: there's quite a bit of ridiculous-ness about all of this. But keep in mind that professional bicycle road racing is the second-largest spectator sport in the world (after football/soccer), so there's a lot of money involved. (Not disagreeing with you here clifford thornton, just parsing the word "ridiculous" a bit.)
  23. Hey Big Wheel, keep on turnin'...older. Enjoy!
  24. I agree 100 percent. Cycling was once my life and livelihood. Now it sickens me to even think about it. I haven't had the "gut" to open the recent/ressurected Armstrong thread, since my feelings about him are strong. I'd opened this thread out of - I don't know - morbid curiousity? Doping's gone on in cycling for many many years. I had some periprheral involvement in some quasi-legal doping, once upon a time. Much more recently, when the kids I was coaching for the national foundation grew insistent on assistance in doping - not insistence on how to compete "clean" - that was the end for me.
