  1. I knew him late in his life, where age and general deterioration from a hard life were probably having as much impact as substances. For anyone who has met James Moody - open, friendly, and light-hearted, with everyone - well, Pony was not James Moody.
  2. And ya gotta like Neal Hefti's (Count Basie's) "Little Pony". Yes, same Pony.
  3. Thanks, Dan. You know, I read that up above, and it didn't quite sink in. I'm going to borrow a DVD and make sure my laptop will play it. There's a drive that says DVD, so it seems likely!
  4. Thanks for all the thoughts. Sounds like all I need is a DVD Player (I know they're cheap) and a CD burning component (not cheap), from which I'd rip the MP3s and copy them back onto my laptop to load onto my player. I'm starting to think this is a bit more than I'd bargained for. I may just stick with what I can get on CD. (A "wrinkle" to keep in mind: I don't have a home, so no place to keep all this stuff; the laptop and MP3 player are about all I can have/carry.) zootsi - thanks for the YouTube stuff. I've never used/visited YouTube; no interest in videos, so it's "off my radar". Hey, thanks Brute. This came in when I was writing response a few minutes ago. It looks like a good solution (though, as I think about it, I still would need to edit things into "tracks"...it's all so confusion.) I'd been looking for something like this, but as a USB to RCAs. Hadn't thought about the analog headphone jack.
  5. I've got that Bud Powell Trio record on Fantasy. Yeah, that's a good one. Turned out I was no damned good. No one within earshot regrets it. Legit question deserves a legit answer. I played for a long time. Like 40 years. During the 15 or so, I'd say I was semi-professional. Worked weekends. Had a day job. Needed both the say solvent. Then my day job turned to 24/7/365 travel, and it was keep the day job and quit playing or... So I just play for myself now. Not ideal. But best I can manage when I can't touch a horn or piano but maybe once a week. Wish it wasn't so. When I retire, I hope to play more.

  7. I'm on the verge of buying a couple of DVDs, since I can't seem to find the music on CD. But (just like I bought CDs before I had a CD player) I don't have a DVD player. So, my ignorant question: can I get the music off the DVDs and onto an MP3 player? I know the answer is "yes" and I suspect that the DVD-RM drive on my laptop is the answer. But I haven't ever done anything with a DVD - heck, I haven't watched TV, a video, a VHS, a movie or whatever - since 1978. I'm right out of the Stone Age. So anyway, I have a DVD-RW drive on my laptop. I can play a CD with it. There are USB ports, but none of the RCA jacks I'm accustomed to in the audio world. Uh, what now? Thanks.
  8. I consider Pony to have been a musical friend, and about as close a personal friend as we could be. (Read his autobiography to learn a bit more about the limits on such things. You'll also get some insight on why he never became "big".) To pick one of his recordings as a fun/interesting example, I'd choose Pony's Express. Look at the musician lineup. I'm not really of the mindset to go on right now about Pony; perhaps later. Complex cat.
  9. I'll add to the chorus: Happy Birthday!
  10. A broadcast per day, plus some other archival stuff. I'm enjoying it. PuroJazz Recent features: Fats Navarro John Carter Charlie Byrd Ernie Henry Benny Morton Billy Pierce Jimmy Lyon Von Freeman Jimmy Noone Franklin Kiermyer Cindy Blackman Ted Curson Lew Tabackin Gene Krupa Don Sleet Orrin Evans Kahil ElZabars Infinity Orchestra (...just to give some impression of the breadth of the broadcasts) Also worth noting: discographical details provided for each broadcast, minus label info.)
  11. Have a great birthday!
  12. Like at the Luggage Store? With 6th Street Stampede and Scott Amendola? A few months ago (June, May?) Dang, I didn't know. I'll check out the samples.
  13. Would you happen to know what date this is good until? Thank you. Novmber 1st. Sorry I neglected to mention.
  14. Not a specific bargain, but a do-it-yourself: 20% off any purchase over $10 at CD Universe. Coupon Code: EHOL20
  15. Does this mean you got the Duets with Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse for your birthday?
  16. MC Hammer has announced WireDoo, a new search engine focused on “deep search” and relational topics. Most search engines are built on links and keywords, explained Hammer at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. Google and other search engines aren’t as strong at connecting keywords to related topics — something he called relationship search. Hammer explained a search for a car is not just about the car, but about the model, the mileage, the specs and even the zipcode (you likely want to buy from a local dealer). A search for a home is related to the surrounding community, schools, neighborhood condition and other related concerns. More here. Sign up to Beta test here. Wiredoo or Weirdo?
  17. I hope it's a great one!

    Amps

Sounds like you might be in the market for a dealer as much as for an amp. Consider visiting a few local dealers to find someone you trust, then listen to what they have or recommend. I'm not sure where you are; if you're in London, maybe this isn't a big deal, since most major brands are going to be represented there. But if you're in a smaller city and want local support, the dealer may be the most important choice.
  19. Yes, thanks!
  20. $5 off $25 purchase purchase through 26 Oct.
  21. For me, I'd say that my "connection" was really the result of an intellectual (laughing at myself) exercise. I don't think I appreciated Bluesnik until I put it into context - it's all variations on the blues. I keep that "blues" lower case, because it's not all 12-bar "classical" Blues. (Rather like St. Louis Blues or Birth of the Blues) It shows both the versatility of the form and the creativity of McLean, Drew and Hubbard, as composers.
  22. Bluesnik. Listen to it. Learn its lessons.
  23. I'll second that!
