Happy birthday, Son-of-a-Weizen!
BeBop replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Have a happy, happy. Birthday. -
I'm taking the opportunity to start a new thread on Signal to Noise...and to welcome stnguy. He posted the following in the Cadence thread. STN deserves its own thread, in my opinion. So, I'm cross posting to make sure people are informed about goings on at Signal to Noise. Rest assured, the spring 2012 issue of Signal to Noise will be published and mailed in mid-April, 2012. In fact, our current plan is to publish in both the spring and fall. With the exception of the now-defunct Borders chain, we'll still be available in all of the same old locations. While subscriptions aren't currently available, we will sell individual copies through our website. Many back issues are still available for those who just can't wait! Of course, we wish David Haney and the 'new' Cadence the very best! The magazine has been an inspiration for us and we're glad to know it's not going away. cheers! pete gershon publisher, SIGNAL to NOISE

I haven't heard the samples on this one, but I queued up all the D'Imperio I have on my MP3 player, and it is almost consistently good or better. I suppose that's why I bought six albums worth.
-
I guess I'd bought some D'Imperio LPs at CDUniverse, back in the day. Pretty good ones, in fact. So this message pops up in today's email. Brought back memories. You know, the kind psychotherapy is supposed to supress. Anyway. DEEP is back with another one. Make of the name what you will: Danny D'Imperio and the Bloviators: Alcohol. Quite a cover photo.

Have a great one, Conn!

Oh THAT Paul! Yes, happy birthday indeed!

Making the next album: CD or MP3/FLAC only?
BeBop replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
True, assuming the fund raising was adequate to make the endeavor financially viable. Hopefully it did. -
Happy Birthday, GoodSpeak!

Making the next album: CD or MP3/FLAC only?
BeBop replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
How about soliciting some feedback on a pre-order/fundraising/CD. People could e-mail or PM Jim and say "I'd be willing to pay $50 (or whatever) to get a CD. Sort of a low-key way to express interest and for Jim to do a "temperature check". It seems like past CDs have been supported through both CD sales and this sort of contribution. Just a thought. -
Holy senility. So I pull this album out, remembering it as an enjoyable one. (I only see my LPs twice a year.) Yeah, still like it. Figure it deserves a mention or thread at Organissimo board. Better do a search first, to be sure some genius hasn't already started such a thread. Man, I'm losing it. Not that I had that much to lose. 2004 thread, with a "re-discovery" in 2009. Three lessons here: (1) my tastes haven't changed all that much. (2) Senility is great for enabling revelations again and again. (3) I forget the third one. It's no Griff and Lockjaw or anything. But it should be heard. Based on a quick peek at Amazon, it looks like the download is still six bucks. Otherwise this is still an LP or import item (and out of stock at that).

By the way, I have a sneaking suspicion it's semi-annual, not bi-annual, as advertised. Seems like a relatively large helping of Brotzmann, Vandermark, FMP...and rather light on the bebop, hardbop, postbop, mainstream-ier.

Happy, Happy Birthday, GA!

Link Discount code: "25MORE" Basically 25% off their original prices of sale-included items (about 600 "jazz"), some of which were mighty cheap to begin with. (A bunch of those V-Disc things are now $0.93.) It doesn't look like DeepDiscount's traditional free shipping covers all purchases. Runs through November 20th.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
BeBop replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
With any luck, Sonny Simmons on Sunday in Oakland. (C'mon United Airlines, you can do it!) -
you rich guys will sneer at my 'new' $10 amplifier

I can't quite make it out in the picture, but I bet this baby has a phono input. Useful. And, these days, the exception, rather than the rule. -
Today's E-Mail: A brief hello from the new publisher of Cadence, the Independent Journal of Creative Improvised Music. Dear Cadence Magazine Subscribers: Hello, my name is David Haney. I have been a subscriber to Cadence Magazine. I am also a pianist and composer. Some of you may have read reviews of my music in Cadence. Over the past eleven years, I have successfully worked with Cadence to complete 14 albums for C.I.M.P. Records and Cadence Jazz Records. Recording for Cadence/CIMP has been a great boon and I have always appreciated Cadence's non-commercial approach. I now face my most daunting task: to maintain the standards of excellence established by the previous publishers, and to steer Cadence toward a new generation of readers in a viable format that ensures the future of Cadence, the Independent Journal of Creative Improvised Music. The content will remain the same, including columns and reviews from many of the existing Cadence writers. The format will change to include an online site hosting Cadence Magazine plus an annual print edition. The new Cadence contains a few new features such as "Jazz Stories - A Video History"; video interviews with living jazz masters. There is also a new section targeting higher educational needs with resources such as lesson plans, crosswords, and contests. I am excited at this new endeavor and hope you will be too. With over 25 years experience in magazine publishing, I have dealt with many of the same difficulties that Cadence has experienced. I am ready to go. I do need your help though. Cadence is a community and in this spirit, I need the readership to step forward. We need financial contributors and we need you to renew your subscription as soon as possible. We are accepting subscription pre-orders for the January 2012 launch date. CADENCE MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION PRICES (includes First-Class shipping): Single subscription (online plus annual PRINT edition): One year: $65 / Outside USA: $70 Two years: $120 / Outside USA: $130 Annual PRINT edition only (without online features): One year: $30 / Outside USA: $35 Two years: $55 / Outside USA: $65 College and institutional subscriptions: multiple users can access Cadence Magazine online. Order also includes two copies of the print edition. One year: $300, multi-year discounts available. See the link at WWW.CADENCEMAGAZINE.COM Or send your contributions and orders to: CADENCE MAGAZINE, P.O. BOX 282, RICHLAND, OR 97870 Contact us by email at CADENCEMAGAZINE@GMAIL.COM or call (315) 289-1444 We also need a host of volunteers and contributors. We are seeking photographers, writers, reviewers, artists, proof-readers, transcribers, "Short Takes" correspondents and more. I invite you to lend your talents to the historic magazine and join us in chronicling jazz history. Call me if you have questions (315-289-1444). I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards -David

Ooooh. Power meters. -
I knew him late in his life, where age and general deterioration from a hard life were probably having as much impact as substances. For anyone who has met James Moody - open, friendly, and light-hearted, with everyone - well, Pony was not James Moody.
-
And ya gotta like Neal Hefti's (Count Basie's) "Little Pony". Yes, same Pony.

Thanks, Dan. You know, I read that up above, and it didn't quite sink in. I'm going to borrow a DVD and make sure my laptop will play it. There's a drive that says DVD, so it seems likely!
-
Thanks for all the thoughts. Sounds like all I need is a DVD Player (I know they're cheap) and a CD burning component (not cheap), from which I'd rip the MP3s and copy them back onto my laptop to load onto my player. I'm starting to think this is a bit more than I'd bargained for. I may just stick with what I can get on CD. (A "wrinkle" to keep in mind: I don't have a home, so no place to keep all this stuff; the laptop and MP3 player are about all I can have/carry.) zootsi - thanks for the YouTube stuff. I've never used/visited YouTube; no interest in videos, so it's "off my radar". Hey, thanks Brute. This came in when I was writing response a few minutes ago. It looks like a good solution (though, as I think about it, I still would need to edit things into "tracks"...it's all so confusion.) I'd been looking for something like this, but as a USB to RCAs. Hadn't thought about the analog headphone jack.

Who among us plays an instrument with the most modest of skills?
BeBop replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I've got that Bud Powell Trio record on Fantasy. Yeah, that's a good one. Turned out I was no damned good. No one within earshot regrets it. Legit question deserves a legit answer. I played for a long time. Like 40 years. During the 15 or so, I'd say I was semi-professional. Worked weekends. Had a day job. Needed both the say solvent. Then my day job turned to 24/7/365 travel, and it was keep the day job and quit playing or... So I just play for myself now. Not ideal. But best I can manage when I can't touch a horn or piano but maybe once a week. Wish it wasn't so. When I retire, I hope to play more. -

I'm on the verge of buying a couple of DVDs, since I can't seem to find the music on CD. But (just like I bought CDs before I had a CD player) I don't have a DVD player. So, my ignorant question: can I get the music off the DVDs and onto an MP3 player? I know the answer is "yes" and I suspect that the DVD-RM drive on my laptop is the answer. But I haven't ever done anything with a DVD - heck, I haven't watched TV, a video, a VHS, a movie or whatever - since 1978. I'm right out of the Stone Age. So anyway, I have a DVD-RW drive on my laptop. I can play a CD with it. There are USB ports, but none of the RCA jacks I'm accustomed to in the audio world. Uh, what now? Thanks.
