  1. I only play "cool" jazz. Besides, CDs can take only so many "bops", not to mention "hard bops" before they crack.
  2. Heck, we've got a vinyl forum: that's enough for me.
  3. It's going to be like when the music industry went after Napster. Almost hard to police. I'm on the side of the content providers. I subscribe to 70 magazines, pay for and read them all. I hope your Napster comparison is prescient: where's Napster today?
  4. I found this post to be most harmonious with my own experience. I stop by three times a year, once per Chicago visit. I don't buy or sell for myself - I enjoy browsing and buying gifts. I don't go lookiing for bargains - as was noted, Reckless and others fill this need. The most appealing stuff I see is the non-big name "rarities" - Interlude, Cobblestone, Spectrum, Soul Deep... They cost $, but wher else you gonna get 'em, eBay? Okay, those are LP labels (with which I'm more conversant), but same for CDs - BYG, DIW, Media 7...
  5. Presumably, there will also be a crackdown on the theft of their content, as other media outlets have done/considered/tried.
  6. Listen for me in the audience.
  7. Ben Webster is the voice of God. Listen.
  8. Birdland Looks interesting. Hoping to get to Northern California one of these days.
  9. Have a great one!
  10. Congratulations on the Sonny Clark. My sympathies on the Woody Shaw I'm forty years into my only "completist quest"
  11. Positive thoughts for Japan and the Pacific Rim.
  12. Hap-Free Birthday!
  13. I'm pretty sure that's where I stayed. An Die Musik was a reasonable walk (409 N Charles Street), though, as I say, it was a more "limited" record store, but a cool venue. Sound Garden was a bit further (1616 Thames), but also walkable, as I remember.
  14. I haven't spent a lot of time there, but the Sound Garden and, better still, An Die Musik left me with pleasant memories. The latter is also a performance venue. http://www.andiemusiklive.com/ Hopefully some 'local' will weigh in. I should qualify my response: I'm not really a recorded music buyer. I'm more of a browser and hanger-around-in-record-store guy. An Die Musik is small and friendly. And, again, a live music spot. That's good for me.
  15. Thanks for the thought. I might quibble with your math (1942+70 ) but it wouldn't be more than a quibble. I suppose I have a knee-jerk reaction to Definitive and even indirect support for their other projects, but they may be a less objectionable alternative here. Again, thanks.
  16. Interesting you should mention this (my favorite Mosaic). It was listening to the duets that "sold" my fried on the Django Duets idea. Then interests grew to include duets with Louis Vola, Andre Ekyan, Bill Coleman (!), Eddie South... One possibility, "Two is Company", but it's a Definitive, so not a "first choice".
  17. I've got a birthday list request I'm trying to fill: "Django Reinhardt Duets" Help me choose. I'm not shopping for a completist; looking for "good value" or some such. (Legitimate labels/issues, please...not to reopen THAT discussion) Thanks.
  18. I'd posted the poll because, as I travel about, I encounter this phenomenon many places - "Jazz at Twilight", "Jazz Oasis", "Evening Jazz".... I must conclude that there is a demand for it. But I don't personally find it satisfying.
  19. Does it work for you?
  20. I'm a bit pressed for time right now, and you've already got some good thoughts and recommendations, so let me just add a 40% off coupon at Borders.com. 40% makes for some decent box deals.
  21. BB King played at my hotel last night. I couldn't get off work...as usual.
  22. Short answer? No. I love all my children equally. Well, there are a few black sheep in the flock...
  23. Big birthday, Big Al. !
  24. The selection isn't anything like in the stores, but if you come across something you like, save a few bucks at Amoeba.com
