  1. Well, Buddy Bolden, I s'pose. I'd like to say Wardell Gray, but he was on something of a downward slide (generally, with some exceptional bits)
  2. !Happy Birthday!
  3. One more time!
  4. In the 70s - the late 70s in particular - he was at virtually every concert I attended, and I was attending at least three a week. I'm surprised that this news/thread hasn't generated more activity. It's hard to believe that anyone on the San Francisco jazz scene of the past 40 years dodn't have strong memories of Tom, almost universally positive, I would think. One more link.
  5. Have a great birthday!
  6. Tom was a good friend from many a concert and from his shop. Oh the tales he told, particularly about the San Francisco scene. And it was all first-hand. The man LIVED jazz. I owe much of my appreciation to his enthusiasm. I call him "friend" (and he called me "Wardell" which he knew I'd take as a compliment) though I can't remember but a dozen conversations about anything other than music. I'm pecking this out on my mobile phone, so forgive the spelling and such. But Tom's on my mind. I just learned that he passed away on August 15th. RIP Tom. Swingin' on a Star. http://articles.sfgate.com/2009-01-14/entertainment/17197587_1_jazz-clubs-jazz-quarter-kleinzahler
  7. Bill Evans - Interplay (the album, not just title song) Don't often get to hear Evans really swingin' hard over up-tempo things. Freddie Hubbard really changes the experience from hearing Evans in a trio, which is what I'm accustomed to - Kind of Blue aside. Jim Hall is nice too, but Freddie is FIRE. Recommended with the BeBop Squeal of Approval.
  8. Or we could just structure the tenor poll... Coleman Hawkins Lester Young One of the guys who imitated Lester Young John Coltrane One of the guys who imitated John Coltrane That about covers it, eh?
  9. Happy Happy! Have a great one.
  10. Banjos terrify me.
  11. Or "The Clown"?
  12. In my mind, I can "hear" scary music from Charles Mingus, but all I can think of is Fables of Faubus. Not really what you're looking for. But he could write with a "scary" or haunting sound. Anyone?

  14. Some nice Wardell Gray work, also on Prestige.
  15. Longshot: it doesn't have one of those pinhole things near the drawer? I've had a few players that had 'em. Stick in a pin and it pops the drawer.
  16. Today I bought a thing. (Not something I do often.) It was intriguing. I figured it would have ample amusement value to cover its small price tag. It’s a small book cum CD. The cover is in at least three languages. It says, among other things: Wu Ming 1 The New Old Thing A Free Jazz Anthology Written and selected by Wu Ming 1 CD Edited by LANKOV (rough translation from Cyrillic) Con testo italiano/inglese ABRAXAS/ESP-Disk I can make out most of this. So I did some research on Wu Ming and the WuMing Foundation. Now I know a little, but would appreciate any comments or elucidation from the enlightened folks here. 17. Nice indeed. Out paths crossed many times when I was in Southern California.
  18. Picked this up from another board. Hoping it's not so: RIP Buddy Collette -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't have any details yet but did get word from pianist Mike Melvoin that Buddy Collette died yesterday. I'm sure more news will come forth. RIP Buddy! __________________ Always Know, Steve Schwartz Jazz on WGBH Friday, 8p-12a WGBH, 89.7FM, Boston www.wgbh.org/jazz
  19. 1201 was the label/brand that re-birthed a bunch of the old Black Lion stuff. Including Kenny Dorham's West 42nd Street. I don't know anything about the business/licensing/royalty paying aspects of the company. But there's some fine music in the Black Lion catalog.
  20. Thank you. I'm glad to know this.
  21. All the best, Dan!
  22. I can't watch the video on my (work) computer, but I have vivid memories of trying to cross a major thoroughfare in Hanoi - probably ten lanes, though there weren't any lanes. At one point, I hired a tuk-tuk (Thai name for three wheel motorcyle - I can't recall Vietnamese name) to take me across the street. He went around the block to do it.
  23. Anyone - most likely a Canadian - read Walrus?
  24. Cadence is one of the rare few I let lapse too. Seems like there was a price hike, but my enthusiasm level didn't rise proportionately. And, again, unusually for me, I didn't miss it.
