I don't have a precise address yet, but I have rough dates for Austin. (I've independently decided to maximize my Austin time, especially weekends, based on prior visits. ) Dates: September 10-13 and probably 23-25. Sequence is looking "clockwise", starting in Austin--> Dallas -> Houston -> San Antonio -> then passing through Austin on my way off to Abilene and out.

Perhaps it'll help that I'm not going right away. Perhaps not.

I've got an unusual (for me) three-week assignment coming up for a client with offices in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. I'll have to visit them all, but have some discretion on how to spend the assignment time. (Keep in mind, this is nearly 100 percent work, so I'm not really looking for music, restaurants, things to do...but...) I'm trying to apportion my time within the bounds of, say two (minimum) to five (maximum) days in each city; I'm going to have about a week in secondary/tertiary cities where my questions don't apply. I'm trying to pick an interesting but economical neighborhood, with hotels, to situate myself. Again, not much discretionary time, but I'd rather be in a neighborhood with cool shops and people and maybe some live music, than in an industrial park with an Applebees. Any tips appreciated.

Check out Seasick Steve while you're there!...though he's probably touring. I think he's still in Notodden/Øst-Telemark when not touring. http://www.seasicksteve.com/ -

I've spent a bit more time/mileage with the Simmons "Live in Paris". The sound is raw and livley - both the audio and Simmons. While lacking the echo of the canyons of the San Francisco Financial District, it does bring back memories, even with a decade-plus displacement between SF and Paris.

Buying a CD is a big deal for me these days. In general, anything I buy I have to discard/give away within a week or two. But I couldn't resist Sonny Simmons, LIve in Paris, a two-CD set on Arhoolie. I used to hear Simmons outside my office window in the 80s (San Francisco, New Montgomery Street). Amazon reviews call it unlistenable (or close to it) and AllAboutJazz says "In 2000, Arhoolie music re-issued a long out-of-print live 1969 album Manhattan Egos to fill in a curious gap in the Simmons story. This time Arhoolie found Mr. Simmons in Paris, live in a recent concert. Audiophiles beware; the recording has a rough bootleg feel with the audience talking through some solos and the overall feel of a Dean Benedetti recording.". But in my rental car, it's enjoyable so far (Disc One); thank goodness for failing hearing. This could even be a keeper.

Jim (Alfredson) will be disappointed. -
How do you prioritize your music purchases?
BeBop replied to TheMusicalMarine's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My "want" list is extremely short and consists almost exclusively of things I've been try to buy for 35+ years. So my answer's easy: see it; buy it. Don't hesitate or haggle. -
Another Red Letter Day. Enjoy!

Thanks! I'm working in Chicago this week, and that's about as good as birthdays get, as far as I'm concerned...other than NOT working in Chicago, I s'pose.

Jim, Randy, Joe, I wish all of you the best, and hope our paths continue to cross here. -
I thoroughly enjoyed Romania (Sibiu and Siebel, especially)...but that was 1990. I'm sure it's quite a different place now.

Happy Birthday! Make it great. -
I live in a suitcase. I'm kind of joking, but it feels like it sometimes. Someday, if I do get off the road and into a house/condo/apartment-type thing, I'll be striving for the small footprint this guy's achieved....with a 1,200 square foot annex for my records, of course. Until then, I've got one suitcase for everything I own...aside from a storage locker where some of my deceased mother's stuff ended up, and my books and aforementioned records. I'm definitely in the dis-accumulation phase of life. Thanks for the article and inspiration.

As I think about it, that's good news; taking things on blind faith is much easier!

All the best, Jan!
