  1. Excellent. Bookmarked. Thank you.
  2. delete newsweek (really hate the new format) add "The Week" - really enjoy this one! Agree on The Week and Newsweak. Another that's really gone to h*ll is US News and World Report. That subscription won't be renewed. On the other hand, Business Week seems at least as good under Bloomberg. It ain't the Economist, but what is?
  3. The IAJRC really has improved quality and reliability. If only they could get more reviewers.
  4. Two years on, I thought I'd resurrect this thread. I still subscribe to an outrageous number of magazines and enjoy them all. Since this thread was started, a few have died (Portfolio, Seed) a couple have gone to h*ll (Atlantic) and there are some new ones out. So, what're you reading?
  5. One other option for me, when I can't have LPs or CDs and even an MP3 player is inconvenient, I've found reasonable satisfaction with internet radio, particularly AccuRadio. ...not that the "skip" button doesn't see active use... As I was typing that, Esperanza came on.
  6. In the car, I only listen to LPs. Actually, this is something of a dream of mine, but that's off-topic. My preferences run LP -> CD -> MP3. But my reality is virtually all MP3. It's a byproduct of not being able to take LPs and CDs on the road. I try to keep my MP3s high-bit rate, but then storage gets to be a problem. Sheesh. Never ends.
  7. Friday September 10th, Jacob Fred Jazz Oddyssey at The Parish, Austin. From Allmusic: When novices discover the experimental music of the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, they are surprised to learn that there is no one named Jacob Fred — the group's name is meant to be clever and ironic. Novices also learn that the Tulsa, OK outfit's mildly avant-garde blend of jazz, rock, and funk draws on a wide variety of influences; JFJO have been influenced by everyone from electric Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix to Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Larry Young, and John Scofield.
  8. I hope the millionth says something....worthwhile! (I hope, therefore, this ain't it.)
  9. Sidewinder's birthday? That's worth celebrating!
  10. 30 years of "happy" with mine too.
  11. By contrast, I grew up in (near) Berkeley. I got caught abusing a dog by petting against the "grain" of its fur. Still a lesser offense than the psychological harm it would have caused if I'd called him a "bad dog".
  12. You should try my wife's حمّص (hummus). Chickpeas, yes. But reduced amounts of tahini and oil. A low-fat version. Or maybe not. Purists would surely be offended.
  13. ...not to mention...The Attic.
  14. I've only been to Lou's once that I can remember. It's a bit South and West of my usual California jobs. But I certainly know the story; see it everywhere.
  15. Nice to see you back Bruce. And the music was nice too. You ever heard that group, Modern Jazz Quartet?
  16. Thanks for the tip on Reba Russell. With my schedule, who knows?! I could still be around when Santa Claus arrives.
  17. I've got work in Northern Florida before long here - November-ish. Anything worth working into my plans - jazz? cool neighborhoods? Quick search here suggests that Tallahassee had the Adderleys and Jacksonville has an NFL team and speeding tickets. Record Store Day Venues? Nil.
  18. Perhaps for Kenny G, though the question posed was about musicians. Lester Young advised not to be a repeater pencil. Are you really say ing that, if you're a creative musician, playing all sorts of different things all over your instrument, RSI isn't a problem? Or is it a joke. (I think it's a joke.) MG A bit of "joke", but I found that, as a player, I didn't do all that much of the same thing, over and over again. Playing saxophone, there are different horns, and your fingers (individually) are called upon to do different things (e.g., manipulate different keys in different ways). It's easy to change relative horn/player position, and merely sitting versus standing versus marching versus bar walking gives dynamics to the kinesiology. Piano I played less, but I found myself more restless in doing so. In that sense, I suppose my body may have been alerting me to a hazard. The repetitive stress injuries I've had (minor ones) have come about when one or more "key" positions is fixed. Bicycling, for instance. I'd be interested in (other) musician's thoughts/opinons. (I don't think of myself as a musician.)

  20. Back to Topic A: Welcome Back!
  21. Thank you. The most fun I've had this week.
  22. I hope to be tuned in, at least for the first 90 minutes or so. Thanks.
  23. Okay, I'm coming clean: Chuck bought me a six-pack to say I liked Nonaah.
