  1. Two musicians were driving down a road. All of a sudden they noticed the Grim Reaper in the backseat. Death informed them they had an accident and they both died. But, before he would take them into eternity, he granted that each musician could have one last request to remind them of their past life on earth. The first musican said he was a Country & Western musician and would like to hear eight choruses of Acky-Breaky Heart for remembrance. So that was granted. When it was time for the second musician to reveal his wish, he said: "I was a jazz musican... just kill me now!"
  2. Ok, sorry then I'm not sure I understand your question. So do you want to know about different similar published books and cd's available or do you want to know which issues of the HL/Aebersold to get besides the ones you already have there? edit: I do not know that much HL and since I had acces to some Aebersold, I used those at first. I can point you out to a reference with all the songs with keys and tempo from the Aebersold. Since I'm a singer, I did pick out some books especially for singers of course, and got single songs from the library. Nowadays I use 'Band in a box" for nearly all of my songs. That is a software program which allows you to change keys and pick out the accompaniment you like and change tempo which is very handy. However I still think play along books with cds are very useful for anyone who is learning to play an instrument or sing. If you would like I could check which ones they have here in our music library in Amsterdam and post the titles.
  3. How about Aebersold? I have always found those very useful.
  4. Sad. Thank you for the great songs Lou!
  5. When I feel restless and like you've mentioned the weather is good. I go sit somewhere to catch some sun on my face and close my eyes. The sun helps me to relax. While my eyes are closed I listen to the sounds around me and try to discover something that makes me smile like a bird or something. When all is quiet you could just listen to your own breathing and concentrate on that. I hope you'll feel better soon.
  6. Ok, I'll remember to check there. Thanks, erwbol.
  7. Ah yeah. Well I usually just look in the second hand section. Sometimes recent released albums are already there. Can you recommend a better record store in the west?
  8. I nearly never buy music online. Mainly I go to just 2 stores, one is because it is a local one and I want to support it. They have mainly second hand stuff. The other is in Amsterdam called 'Concerto'. After the closing down of 'Blue Note' that is the best option to go for jazz. I do buy at concerts sometimes, when it is affordable and I did enjoy the concert or when I'm a fan of the artist anyway and want to pick one of his/her albums. It is nice to get it signed right there. I don't get mp3 downloads, mainly because I like to look at the booklets, and want to 'feel' and 'smell' the real thing. I can't afford to buy that much, so when I do get an album I have carefully picked it out.
  9. Really nice to see those videos. Thanks for posting! Singers often change the lyrics to make it more their own. Like these last two videos. Whether you'll sing "My baby" being a man or a woman does make a difference. So you can change some lines to make it more suitable for yourself and the objection of your affection you'll sing for, to make it more believable.. I have done this song and updated it a bit to modern times. F.e. in the last part, instead of "Liz Taylor is not his style" and " even Liberace's smile", I picked out some names of nowadays artists like Shakira and so on. Yes I know, she's not a jazzartist but I needed a well known name with same emphasis. It is fun to write your own lyrics.

Hi jazzbo, I was only teasing you a bit. Sorry. When I saw your comment , I wasn’t really sure whether you were actually talking to me, but figured you must have been. Anyway, thank you for the kind words. I’m really sorry to hear you had to make the decision to move away from A. I can imagine your parents are very happy you did though. Life isn’t so easy, is it? I do believe you two will survive this period and it probably will make your love even stronger. I have my own challenges to overcome but beyond that, I’m okay. My writing and music have become an important part which helps to put things in perspective and in expressing myself still, so that’s good. Music does connect and it is wonderful to communicate with people that way. See you around, take care. liefs Page
  11. Thanks, Justin!
  12. I find it very hard to name just one beautiful melody, since I have many favourites. When I would have to name one, this one comes to my mind. I think maybe since when I heard this rendition, this desire suddenly came over me to be able to sing with just as much emotion as this horn. Nature Boy - Jon Hassell and Ronu Majumdar

I've missed you too, my friend. Obviously it has been too long, since you've forgotten how to spell my name and I'll have to get used to your 'new' one. How's A? liefs
  14. Thanks, xybert. I didn't know you were a member here. Nice to see you too!
  15. Oh no, no problem, I'll find my way. Thanks for the welkom.
  16. Hi MG, thank you and yes, the first is correct. Although I do not really fit the description, they call us 'cheeseheads'.
  17. Hello everyone, I was looking for an introduction-thread as well. I hope rockinglicks won't mind me joining in this way. I'm page. I've found jazz some years ago and discovered it to be real close to my heart. Basically I'm interested in people, their thoughts and drive. It is really nice to talk to people with the same interest. I like learning from what others have to say; thinking and discussing about that. My instrument is/are vocals. At the moment I’m working on developing my skills to become a jazz singer songwriter which is exciting. For the time being I think I’ll just read to discover how everything works around here. Thank you for having me.! Regards, page
