  1. There are so many, aren't there! Yes, she has made some fantastic vocaleses. She's also a composer, a painter and writer. Such talent in multiple fields!
  2. Yes indeed. Also Eliane Elias. That sounds like a great album! Thank you for pointing it out! Very, very independent minded singer from Dublin though she lives in London. Has strong connections with some front rank Brit jazzers (her partner is a guitarist called Phil Robson). Has done some standards recordings and made a recording of Carole King's 'Tapestry' a while back and has a Leonard Cohen album due. But usually she does her own material. I've really taken to Kate McGarry over the last couple of years. Oh, and I love Stacey Kent's voice. And then there's Norma Winstone...no use if you need things rooted in the blues, but I've always loved her voice and, again, her relentless pursuit of her own agenda. And and another very independent minded singer - Maria Pia de Vito. Every thing from Neopolitan folk songs and baroque opera through Welsh hymns to standards and flirting with electronica. Thanks for the info on Christine Tobin. I must ask my London friend if he knows her. I love the idea that she set the words of Yeats to music. The combination jazz with poetry works really well I believe. Yesterday I posted about a singer who did that with poems of Langston Hughes. Her name is Leyla McGalla. Not jazz, but worth checking out when you like poetry in combination with music. Ah, I love Kate McGarry. Did you see my thread with the Abbey Lincoln vocal? Kate McGarry has a stunning rendition of the Bunky Green/Abbey Lincoln song "Little girl, I'll miss you". Thanks for the other suggestions.
  3. I prefer the low warm voices too. You beat me with Melody Gardot, Cyril, she is one of my favourites I look up to. I saw her live and she is fabulous! I do a few of her songs. Besides her my favourites of today are: Barb Jungr, Madeleine Peyroux, Fay Claassen, Majorie Barnes, not necessarily in that order. Besides them Gretchen Parlato and Karrin Allyson are jazz singers to check out. Roberta Gambarini was already mentioned. Lizz Wright is also someone to check out. From earlier times my favourites are Ella, Sarah, Billie, Julie London, Peggy Lee, Abbey Lincoln, Carmen McRae, Nancy Wilson (still going strong), Nina Simone, Anita O'Day. Check out the thread about Beverly Kenney too. If you want to know specific songs or albums, I can copy paste a liste I've made elsewhere. Like I mentioned I tend to pick out the low warm voices which are similar to my own. Like Cyril I relate those to my idea of what is jazz the most, although some of the singers I've mentioned mix jazz with other genres. (Lizz Wright f.e., also a fabulous singer) That sounds like a great album! Thank you for pointing it out!
  4. 1. 2005. Maybe silly but it was kind of a revelation when I realized it. It feels like the fit of a glove, for my instrument but also for me as a person. Coming home, if you'd like to call it that. 2. I've been into rock and pop, some soul. None of these gave me the same feel as I have now though. (edit: maybe I should have mentioned that I don't earn my living as musician, but I felt spoken to since it is who I am regardless)
  5. Happy Birthday!
  6. Happy Birthday!
  7. beauty is a subjective term, thankfully, therefore we need it and we don't. These were pointed out to me a few months ago: Interview when she was 21: on the show of Hugh Hefner:
  8. I just posted the video because I thought not everyone might know the original or what song I was talking about. That's all. I always make sure to search first before I ask. That said, google results might come out topographical based. I once helped out a singer with lyrics for a vocalese and I didn't really get why she couldn't find them since they appeared as the no 1 result evey time I searched. It turned out that wasn't the case on her end.
  9. Yes, I'm looking for Abbey singing it. I did hear this one too and mentioned it in my o.p. and it is lovely btw. Thanks for posting, Cyril While we're at it. This is my favourite rendition so far (of the vocal renditions that is) Kate McGarry She takes my breath away here. Bringing it as slow as she does, you can hear very clear what a lovely melody it is. This was published in Germany I believe. I would love to get that album, but can't get it anywhere around here. So I'm really happy with this youtube video. with just Keith Ganz on ac. guitar and Joe Locke on vibraphone. Yes, absolutely stunning!
  10. For anyone interested, you can listen to the album here: http://www.3fm.nl/nieuws/detail/357470/Beluister-pre-stream-Foreverly-van-Billie-Joe-en-Norah
  11. Thanks king ubu. Yeah, I know it is a long shot, but well I'm just going to find out as much as I can about where, who and when the song was recorded. It is a lovely song, Bunky wrote a stunning melody! I have a soft spot for Abbey's vocals, there's not anyone quite like her. She has written some beautiful songs herself, this one just the lyrics but nonetheless I would like to hear her sing it. Thanks again. Here is Bunky performing, I get all happy while listening:
  12. So I've found this, dont know whether it is complete. Little Girl I’ll Miss You by Vernice ‘Bunky’ Green 1979, February, 21st/22nd studio recording 1993 studio recording 2001, August, 18th live recording 2007, July, 1st live recording 2010, April, 22nd/23rd studio recording 2011, August, 7th live recording Now Abbey couldn’t have been in the last live recording since she died in August 2010. So I hope to find out now, which musicians took part in the recordings of 2001 and 2007. I’ll try to find out about the studio recordings too, but like I mentioned before, it is probably not likely she took part in those. As you can see, Abbey isn't mentioned here as lyricist either. While Cassandra Wilson already recorded with Steve Coleman in 1980, so the lyrics have been written around that time probably too. It's like a puzzle. Any info is still welcome. I'll keep you posted about my results.
  13. Have fun there! I can't listen out here I think, due to location and time difference but hop you will enjoy the concert.
  14. Yes, I know it is the same song and that was what I meant. There aren't that many vocal renditions though.
  15. Thank you all for replying! Hi king ubu, yes I didn't find it on Abbey's discography either. I can't imagine she did never sing it though, since she was a singer herself and believe me when you write your own lyrics, you would. The only question is whether she got recorded. I'm wondering whether she got asked especially to write these lyrics. Knowing what the occasion was why, would help. Any way, Bunky Green gave his permission or he might even have asked her since she was known for her lyrics. I think Cassandra Wilson was probably the first to record the lyrics, maybe she did write them especially for her. I would like to find out. Hi Cyril, no the original title is definitely "Little Girl, I'll miss you" since that was the title Bunky Green gave his song. Cassandra Wilson changed it into "Little one, I'll miss you". Maybe because she didn't want to sing especially for a girl and to suggest that the song was meant for a little child while Bunky Green could have written it for a girl friend, not necessarily for a child, I don't know but that could be. Vocalists often change some of the lyrics to make the song more their own or more believable. I do it too. I'm actual writing a Dutch version. Not quite finished yet, but I have translated more jazz songs and I really like to use my own language since I think it is beautiful. Thank you for pointing out this rendition. Thanks again, guys. I appreciate your help!
  16. Hi M.G. thank you for looking and replying! I know it is not on any of Bunky Green's albums. I think if it is recorded it should be a live recording or a radio broadcast or something.
  17. Hi all, I'm wondering whether Abbey Lincoln ever recorded the Bunky Green song: "Little girl, I'll miss you" which she wrote the lyrics for. It's on Green's album "Places we've never been" from 1980 and later at "Apex" from 2010. I have heard the rendition of Cassandra Wilson at Steve Coleman's album "On the edge of tomorrow", which is great and Kate McGarry has done a stunning rendition. However I would like to hear Abbey sing her lyrics herself somehow; don't know if she ever performed it, but I hope so. Any information related to this would be helpful. Thanks, regards, page
  18. That's good news. Happy to hear it.
  19. I understood that thread is about work of famous poets while this one was originally meant for work of the people who are member here? Well, that is why I've posted my musing here anyway. Hope that that was okay. OK by me. Thanks.
  20. Could be, yes. Systeemherstel, kies een herstelpunt voordat het probleem verscheen. In my experience you can go back; I uninstalled a later IE version a few times, only to find that an earlier version had reappeared on my PC. When you don't have the option "automatically install" on, you will always get a warming what new updates are available. That way you can make a restore point before you install and then you can always go back.
  21. My favourite of his so far (haven't heard all albums yet) Is "Water from an Ancient Well".

  23. I think it has too much an oh sound. This site has a fairly good speech of "Boeren". http://www.oddcast.com/home/demos/tts/tts_example.php?sitepal Typ in the word, choose Dutch and then for voice Xander. He has the most accurate. (not Laura, that is completely wrong speech)
  24. I think I would rephrase that to: the pill is a whole lot better than no protection at all. It is to both partners to take responsibilty.
  25. That is scary indeed. I have used it in the past but discovered at a certain moment that my health was suffering from it. Lately there has been a lot on the news on this pill called Diane 35 which has caused deaths even. I'm not surprised by this story you brought to our attention. There are better ways to protect yourself.
