  1. I do agree. I had to pay some customs dues on a bunch of records from the US a while back. These are collected by the post office and they say you can pay by credit card on line. So I tried and found that I couldn't proceed past entering my details because I didn't put my mobile phone number in - I haven't got one. So I found a phone number and complained bitterly and at length and the lady I spoke to eventually put me through to someone who could take my credit card details over the blower. Complaining bitterly sometimes works - when it happened again a couple of weeks ago, the post office site didn't have that field as mandatory, so all was easy. OK, to answer the question When you go onto Spotify and it asks you to register through Facebook, it's not obvious that, a bit below that part of the screen, there's an alternative way to sign up. I can't remember exactly what it says, but if you read carefully below the Facebook bit, you'll find it. Of course, any normal person would see the word Facebook and back out immediately - so they're obviously not interested in normal people MG Hi MG, thanks. I'll look into it. I didn't want to join Spotify so far for that reason. An alternative to Spotify is Grooveshark which seems a bit users friendly. You don't have to join there to be able to listen to music. I'm surprised people give their personalia so easy to any site that asks for it. I'm pretty hesistant to that myself, I have done without Facebook so far and I think I will manage even if it would mean I can't use sites like Spotify. Thanks again. regards, page
  2. If you won't mind me asking M.G. How did you manage to get into Spotify without Facebook? I hate all these requirements everywhere for Facebook, so I generally avoid the sites which ask for them.
  3. Thanks for sharing. Life forms everyone and when that someone is a musician it forms the music as well. Often sad events can bring musicians to write stunning music. Really great to learn about this BT! Thanks. Wow! I didn't see the other link until now. Great to be able to listen to all that music. How generous of his son to make this possible. Really looking forward to listening to all of it! Thanks again, B.T.
  4. Happy Birthday!
  5. Best wishes to your wife and strenght and love for the both of you! I've lost my parents at relatively young age and since I've been trying to be as honest as I could in telling people how I feel. You'll never know what is going to happen, so seize the day and enjoy life to the most with your loved ones! regards, page
  6. Ah, I didn't know. The jokes are all new to me. I'm not a native English speaker.
  7. Yikes - I don't see it on the site any longer. It was / is PB003. Wasn't cheap - I think around 18 euros + shipping, so probably $25+ U.S. Thanks. I guess it is only an internet shop since I've never noticed an actual store in that street. U.S. residents usually don't pay tax on small packages from overseas. Thanks. I didn't know that and I only mentioned it since it was a footnote on the website, tax might be added.
  8. Just out of curiosity. Can I ask how much you've payed with shipment and tax included?
  9. Hm, you're right there. The site of dOeK shows English btw. He's playing in Chicago tomorrow (not with the quartet), but that probably is a long way to drive for you. http://www.doek.org/agenda/
  10. Ah, Eric Boeren, I have seen him perform a few times. Eric is with a company called "dOeK". They are a collective of improvising musicians. They offer it on their website here: http://doek.bandcamp.com/album/coconut The cd would be around $25,-. with shipment. That may seem a lot but this way the artist gets payed in a fair way. Cd's are far more expensive in Europe than they are in the US, so that's one reason I'm carefully picking my choices. Both sites erwbol mentioned are a good way. Ordering through dOeK would save you a few dollars, but not that much. There is something said about that taxes may apply but that probably is the case with the online stores too. Btw, I don't think it is irrational to hesitate giving your creditcard info through e-mail, I'd think it is wise.
  11. I replied this on another thread, about where I buy my music: "I nearly never buy music online. Mainly I go to just 2 stores, one is because it is a local one and I want to support it. They have mainly second hand stuff. The other is in Amsterdam called 'Concerto'. After the closing down of 'Blue Note' that is the best option to go for jazz. I do buy at concerts sometimes, when it is affordable and I did enjoy the concert or when I'm a fan of the artist anyway and want to pick one of his/her albums. It is nice to get it signed right there. I don't get mp3 downloads, mainly because I like to look at the booklets, and want to 'feel' and 'smell' the real thing. I can't afford to buy that much, so when I do get an album I have carefully picked it out." In the past I also went to record/vinyl fairs, not for jazz but for material of a particularly rockband I was fan of. I did notice there is another fair coming and wondered just this week whether I should go to look how they're sorted in jazz.
  12. Ah, that was great, Thank you for posting! I've never heard about that musical. Fats Waller always makes me smile. A belated happy birthday btw. regards, page
  13. Your research sounds exciting. Maybe that church has records from the time she was born. If she was baptized that will be written down somewhere in their records and maybe you could get more information from that. Good luck, page

  17. Question: How many girl singers does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: Two. One to hold the diet coke and the other to get to persuade the accompanying musician to do it.
  18. Two musicians were driving down a road. All of a sudden they noticed the Grim Reaper in the backseat. Death informed them they had an accident and they both died. But, before he would take them into eternity, he granted that each musician could have one last request to remind them of their past life on earth. The first musican said he was a Country & Western musician and would like to hear eight choruses of Acky-Breaky Heart for remembrance. So that was granted. When it was time for the second musician to reveal his wish, he said: "I was a jazz musican... just kill me now!"
  19. Ok, sorry then I'm not sure I understand your question. So do you want to know about different similar published books and cd's available or do you want to know which issues of the HL/Aebersold to get besides the ones you already have there? edit: I do not know that much HL and since I had acces to some Aebersold, I used those at first. I can point you out to a reference with all the songs with keys and tempo from the Aebersold. Since I'm a singer, I did pick out some books especially for singers of course, and got single songs from the library. Nowadays I use 'Band in a box" for nearly all of my songs. That is a software program which allows you to change keys and pick out the accompaniment you like and change tempo which is very handy. However I still think play along books with cds are very useful for anyone who is learning to play an instrument or sing. If you would like I could check which ones they have here in our music library in Amsterdam and post the titles.
  20. How about Aebersold? I have always found those very useful.
  21. Sad. Thank you for the great songs Lou!
  22. When I feel restless and like you've mentioned the weather is good. I go sit somewhere to catch some sun on my face and close my eyes. The sun helps me to relax. While my eyes are closed I listen to the sounds around me and try to discover something that makes me smile like a bird or something. When all is quiet you could just listen to your own breathing and concentrate on that. I hope you'll feel better soon.
