I got a chance to see, photograph and talk with George Coleman last night in Chicago. He played with a local but very tight rhythm section (Willie Pickens on Piano, Larry Gray on Bass and Dana Hall on Drums). George played the "Miles Davis" Songbook and a handful of other tunes and sounded very good. The crowd was sparse with only about 60 people there. I talked to him for awhile after the show and gave him a photograph I made of him a few years ago. I told him I was from Indianapolis and he began to talk about some of this friends that grew up there (Jimmy Spaulding, Freddie and Slide, Mel Rhyne and Buddy Montgomery, it was very cool, the feelings he has for these guys.....then the strangest thing happened; Some guy in the audience asked all the band members if he could jam with them on one song after the show (when the other patrons were gone). They actually said "yes". I stuck around for this guys "audition" and he was pretty good. While he was playing, the bassist had a grin on his face as if to say "hey, this guys better than I thought. I'm not sure what the deal was, maybe it was just this guys dream to play with these guys, or maybe his 15 minutes of fame. If "this guys" is a member of this BB, step up and share your story!!!! Late, This is a great recording. Phil's a very cool guy, I've met him a few times and have photographed him on several occasions. I would certainly recommend all of his recordings, very underrated in my opinion. Mark

Bill Charlap Trio @ Jazz Showcase (Chicago)
sheldonm replied to mgraham333's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Matt, I was also at the 9/14 show but it was the 4:30 show, which was very good, although there weren't many patrons in the house. Joe Segal told me it has been a pretty slow week. I made a few nice photographs of the guys and also spoke to them, very friendly indeed. -
FYI......I just ordered the Mobley/Walton CD from CD Universe for $6.98. The upcoming RVG's are also only $8.49, that's about as cheap as you will find them. I ordered all five of the RVG's and the Mobley for $55.00, which includes shipping.

Thanks to all, I just got then at CD Universe for $8.39 each, that's much better! Mark

Has anyone seen any hot deals out there on tomorrows RVG, say maybe something in the sub $10.00 range. CD Universe has them for $11.98, not that hot!!! Thanks, Mark

Sal, I also saw them in Chicago, great show. Was that you that sat close to me at the Roy Haynes show last week? I had a camera, you asked to borrow a marker??? I think I heard the name Sal mentioned, just thought I'd ask. I'll be back this Sunday for the Buddy DeFranco show.

Looking for Conn version of Judgement
sheldonm replied to Ed S's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Finally!!! I picked up both "Stop and Listen" by Baby Face Willette and "Judgement" by Andrew Hill, my collection is now complete! I bought the last two off of EBay for a decent price. I don't usually look to buy an entire collection of many things, but was so close, I'd thought I'd try. Thanks to all who have sold or helped me locate the last several I needed. -
