  1. Hat recently added The Dark Tree as a midprice title. I would highly recommend starting with this one.
  2. a few who haven't been named so far: Tina Brooks Fred Jackson Alan Shorter
  3. Have you heard Dreadlocks Dread? That's the only Big Youth I've picked up so far and it is a lot of fun. I had never really given the melodica a thought either way until hearing Augustus but these albums are fantastic! I also really like King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown. (Augustus Pablo w/ King Tubby)
  4. This could grow to be a huge list. I'll start with a few non-Marley discs I consider to be essential: Augustus Pablo - Original Rockers (A friend of mine who is a huge reggae / dub fan called this disc the "dreadest album ever.") Augustus Pablo - East of the River Nile The Congos - Heart of the Congos (the 2 disc Blood and Fire set sound much better than the older version and has some nice extra material) The Gladiators - Trenchtown Mix-up Culture - Two Sevens Clash I know I need to get some Lee Scratch Perry, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I've been told the 3cd Arkology set is the way to go. speaking of the Skatalites, I would also highly recommend Tommy McCook's Blazing Horns/Tenor in Roots, also on Blood and Fire. He was a founding member of the Skatalites and this set is a lot "jazzier" than the other discs I mentioned.
  5. STEP ONE: buy another Mosaic STEP TWO: buy some cds at Tower's Blue Note Sale STEP THREE: buy an OOP Hat disc on ebay etc... Excuse for my wife: "I didn't get enough validation on the Organissimo board tody so I had to spend another $300 on cds. It is all Chaney's fault!" B)
  6. It wasn't too long ago, before this was reissued, that someone paid over $300 on ebay for this one. Pays to be patient sometimes. "2Pac : Nu-Mixx Klazzics " I always get this one confused with the Bix Beiderbecke Nu-Mixx Klazzics set.
  7. JazzLoft.com has Dortmund in stock for $11.99. Cadence has it for $8.50.
  8. fwiw there are no problems with my copy, either.
  9. JSngry put it best a while back while describing Interstellar Space: "You don't fuck with a man seeing God before he dies." I think a lot of the last comments are pretty spot-on. Simon's in particular really seems accurate to me.
  10. Later period Coltrane really pisses off my wife. Later period Coltrane is in my "do not play at home without headphones on" section. I did catch my wife humming along with Albert Ayler once, but it was Love Cry, so I didn't read too much into it.
  11. Would you view it differently if it were about Christianity? he's correct. If you look at the sleeve of an original vinyl copy of Om, "evil spirits" are credited with tenor sax, soprano sax, vocals and some post-production work. Just as Blue Note has its RVG series of remasters I predict that Impulse will soon have its "Evil Spirits" line of remastered classic albums. on a related note, I read somewhere that the original poem for a Love Supreme was just a text version of the McDonalds "special sauce, lettuce, cheese" Big Mac song.
  12. as someone once suggested on the old board, Om makes for great romantic dinner music.

Out of the ones I have heard I would say "hellyeah!" to Erzulie Maketh Scent, Leaf Palm Hand and Looking (Berlin Version) Solo. I have also heard Spots, Circles and Fantasy, which is a duo set with Han Bennink and wasn't as impressed by it. I should give it another listen one of these days.
  14. According to Robin Eubanks the Dave Holland Big Band has a new disc scheduled to come out later on this year. He described it as closer in sound and energy to their live show than What Goes Around. After seeing them live in January I a really looking forward to this one!
  15. you should correct this asap. If you are not sure you want to explore the later, more "out" trane there is still a wealth of fantastic discs on Impulse. Start with these: A Love Supreme Ballads Crescent Complete Village Vanguard First Meditations Ballads then, check out these three, which are freer, but still essential: Stellar Regions Interstellar Space Meditations

probably not, in my opinion. Nailed is fantastic, but is is pretty furious and unrelenting. I would recommend starting with some of his more recent solo work. Since you've avoided any post 1950's Cecil I would recommend starting with Indent or the Willisau Concert and see how those grab you. If you are curious about exploring some of his more "out" group work It Is in the Brewing Luminous can be had very inexpensively now, as Hat has added it as a "mid-price" title. For that reason alon I would suggest grabbing it before Nailed if you are unsure if the music will be too out for you.

I had the same reaction. perhaps even moreso when I listened to Nailed for the first time.

Another plug for Erstwhile: if you get hooked, and start buying a few discs at a time, Jon gives great discounts for multiple disc orders and doesn't charge extra for shipping. For example, one disc is $15, shipping included. I'll be ordering five discs, which will be $55, shipping included.

If you miss out on this one before it goes OOP try Too Beautiful to Burn. It is, by far, my favorite Erstwhile right now. In my opinion, it is one of the more accesible Ersts. I think it is an absolutely gorgeous album. (La Voyelle isn't too shabby, either.)
  20. I received BFT #9 today and have given it one spin so far. Very enjoyable! Great job compiling this one, Alexander! I need to give this one a few more listens before guessing on the tracks, but I will say that track 11 features one of my least favorite "vocalists."

OK, I'll bring you some more. If this got you interested in Russian / Soviet improv, I would encourage you to check out Golden Years of Soviet New Jazz series on Leo Records (at the bottom of the page here: http://www.leorecords.com/?m=catalogue&id=CD_GY). These are limited editions (500 copies), and they are pretty cheap ($46 per 4-CD set). The music is highly original (and diverse) and probably better displays the unique "Russian" approach to improvisational music (the CDs I sent you are a bit more in the "European" vein) are there any volumes in this series I should start with over the others, in your opinion? welcome jon abbey! I won't be getting to it before the weekend but I'll be placing a new order from Erstwhile on Monday. I'm really looking forward to hearing the new Keith Rowe / Fennesz disc.
  22. I recently purchased the Atlantic New Orleans Jazz Sessions Mosaic and have been loving it! I've been eyeing the Kid Ory set but, having no knowledge of his music, was hoping people here could post any thoughts they have on this set, his music in general, and any similarities to the Atlantic N.O. set. Also, it seems like this set has been around for a while and hasn't sold very well. Is the license due to expire anytime soon?

I thought they might be the same. I'll explore the Leo website tomorrow. I've been too busy at work today to spend much time online. (which is probably how my employer prefers it. )

I greatly enjoyed both discs. I also need to explore the Genalin Trio. I have never heard any of their work. The Golden Years set got a great write up in a back issue of Signal to Noise. I'll go back and reread it tonight. At that price it sounds like I might have to start exploring those releases before they go oop.

another great disc of Russian improv to listen to today: GERU - German Russian Project Peter Kowald - Bass Dietrich Rauschtenberger - Drums Alexander Kostikov - Guitar Andrew Solovyov - Trumpet, Flugelhorn and Flute I really enjoy this disc! I wasn't as instantly amazed by it as I was by Closed Mountains, but this one is definitely a keeper. Kostikov reminds me of Joe Morris on many of these tracks. Kowald, Rauschtenberger and Solovyov all sound great on here, too. The crayon war drawings in the liner notes don't really fit the tone of the music, as the songs themselves are much calmer and more thoughtful than I would have expected based on the imagery. All in all I am really impressed by both discs!
