  1. My order has now been placed. I just found out that Randy will be performing in Vermont this summer and I am really looking forward to seeing him for the first time. This should do quite nicely to tide me over in the meantime!
  2. I didn't realize this existed until today. Has anyone seen this? It seems to be a quintet show from last year. I am really interested in seeing this and was wondering if anyone here had comments on the quality of the DVD.

I really like the Roland Kirk disc...it is one of the better Atlantic albums he put out, imo. None of them are as essential as his earlier work, but I would recommend picking it up. I haven't listened to Haazz and co. in quite a while. I reember it being quite a free blowout, with some rough tape edits and splices. Enjoyable (if you are into that sort of thing) but definitely not essential.

I would say yes, depending on your tastes. I really dig this set but can tell that it is most definitely not for everyone. If the price is right give it a chance. You'll be able to get your money back on ebay if you really dislike it.
  5. I'm right there with you. I am constantly amazed by his recordings.
  6. Probably my favourite disc of last year...even though it came out the year before! I've always thought that "Best of " lists for a particluar year should include any release I heard for the first time that year, to be accurate.
  7. I recognize one of those discs, Bev. Based on a post of yours a while bak I bought Simone Guiducci's Chorale and brought it into work today. Great music!
  8. I shouldn't have read this thread. I've had the NO Jazz and the TKM sets on my radar for a while now and decided to grab both of them before they are gone.
  9. Stan Turrentine - The Spoiler Stan Turrentine - Look Out Hank Mobley - The Flip Gloria Coleman - Soul Sisters Freddie Hubbard - Hub-tones Tool - Laeteralus
  10. Speaking of Fennesz, his latest has been tempting me at the local record store every week for some time now. I dig Hotel Paral.lel and Endless Summer. You need to hear his Live in Japan disc then. It is a logical extension of Endless Summer, in some ways. I've enjoyed all of the Fennesz I have heard and am looking forward to hearing his duo cd with Keith Rowe that is coming out on Erstwhile next month. From what people who have heard it are saying it should be radially different than all of these other discs.
  11. any idea how long the $1.99 sale will last? I'm hoping they will add a few of the newer RVGs before I place my order.

I am really enjoying this disc! Closed Mountains is a 2000 release featuring Christophe Rocher on clarinet and bass clarinet, Jean Quillivic on soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone, Roman Ros on violin and guimbarde and Yuri Yaretchuk on bass clarinet, soprano and tenor saxophone. On first listen I a reminded of ROVA, if the fourth horn was replaced with the violin. Great stuff!
  13. I only saw Helium live three times, and never thought they were all that impressive. The first show was opening up for the Dambuilders and Julianna Hatfield. The last was opening for Sonic Youth and was, by far, the worst of the three. The Amon Duul quote is fantastic!
  14. The last time I saw him he was still playing in Helium, but that was years ago.
  15. Polvo! Can't believe I forgot to list them. Vibracathedral is very lo-fi, very drony. Kind of like FSA, but with more psychedelia mixed in.
  16. I guess I still think of Sonic Youth as "indie" since I started listening to them back when they were on SST. There are an infinite number of genres to break down non-major label guitar based music into, if you really think about it for a while.
  17. great choices! Ones I listen to a lot that are not on your list: Unwound Fugazi My Bloody Valentine Spacemen 3 Yume Bitsu Bardo Pond Flying Saucer Attack Vibracathedral Orchestra the Jesus Lizard Dinosaur Jr Sonic Youth

I thought it wa very well balanced between the two of them. I am a huge fan of Hamid's so I might be a little biased.
  19. I also enjoy this one, but it is definitely less accessible than many of the other discs recommeded above. Dried Rat Dog is a great one, too.
  20. This one was just released and is fantastic!

The thought has crossed my mind.... The Russian improv was received last night. I brought them into work today and will give them a listen after I get out of a few meetings this morning. Thanks again!

These Cecil Taylor albums on FMP are fantastic! Another phenomenal disc here.
  23. The "investment" argument can be a good one. I once sold a single cd for over $200 on ebay. That disc paid for most of my new music purchases for quite a few months.
  24. No, I am happily married. My wife is, luckily, very understanding of my passion for music.
  25. When you start buying cds you already own. When you have a stack of cds you bought the month before that you still haven't listened to for the first time. Other than that, I don't believe it is possible to buy too much music.
