I thought he was making a reference to the Tuvan throat singing. Is Una Mae known for that?

There are some great deals to be had with the 60% off / no shipping code. Thanks for posting that! For less than $43 I got Sonny Criss- Complete Imperial Sessions (Remastered), Ornette Coleman, The Complete Science Fiction Sessions (Remastered), Kenny Dorham, 'Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia (Remastered) and Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come (Deluxe Edition) That is just over $5 a disc. Not too shabby.

I thought "AWOL" meant "always wants 'out' listening." back to the Tsahar - the vocals are just on track 4. (The shortest on the album.). Hamid is chanting in Arabic and Kowald is doing something that sounds like Tibetan throat singing in the background. Tsahar and Ragin sit this track out. I dig it, but could see how others might not.
-
I believe the vocals are limited to one track. I'll spin the cd again and let you know.

I ordered my copy through Verge. It took them a while but they were able to supply it. FMP sells it, too.

I'm listening to Open Systems, a 2001 release on Marge featuring Assif Tsahar, Hugh Ragin, Peter Kowald and Hamid Drake. It took me a while to track down a copy of this one after having it recommended to me but it was most definitely worth it! This is one of my favorite albums, regardless of genre. A month or two back I listened to it twice, back to back, which is unusual for me. I have a hard time describing why I love this disc. The playing, the writing and the atmosphere these four players create all come together in one complete whole. Very highly recommended.

Have you heard any of Shepik's discs as a leader? (I can't remember if we have discussed this before.) I highly recommend both The Well and Drip, in that order. Great music and great playing on each.

Gavino Murgia in addition to being vocalist, is a fantastic alto saxophonist and Sardenian bagpipes player. "Fantastic" means super-human technique and great sense for melody. hmmmmn...I don't recall postingthat quote here... B) any recommendations for discs of his to explore? Took me some time to find this disc in my collection. Riccardo Lay Quartetto "Frammenti" (il manifesto, 2001) Riccardo Lay - bass, perc Gavino Murgia - ts, ss, fl, and some Sardenian bagpipe-like instrument(s) Nico Casu - trumpet Fabrizio Sferra - drums Beautiful stuff - somewhat close in style to Don Cherry's "Complete Communion", but with a strong Italian flavor, meaning very melodic and joyful. Very positive music. I think the only place to find this disc on-line is through Felmay: http://www.felmay.it - it is available there for €8. thank you for posting that! I'll have to grab a copy.

I have a copy of Charles Mingus' 1971 autobiography Beneath the Underdogfor sale for $8. It is a paperback copy of the 1990's reprint in near-mint condition. There is some slight scuffing on the back cover. Shipping in the U.S. $1, elsewhere $6.

Interesting. I've never heard of MIchael Marcus. How would you describe his playing? Ayler has a great track record going with the past year or so of releases.

Hmm... I don't remember it being that wonderful... Will listen to it today. I have to join in the dissent. Tenderly has never done anything for me. I gave it another spin after reading your post and, while there are a few nice moments, the disc as a whole just doesn't "click" for me.

Gebbia and Parker duo. Can you imagine how THIS could sound like? I can't. has this been released? I'd love to hear this...no idea if it would be succesful at all...

and the most disturbing thing is that most of it is informative! these guys are not in it for the post count, that's fer sure! you're just saying that to boost your post count.

I heard Evan Parker's Monoceros for the first time today. What a fantastic disc! Four tracks, all solo soprano. The first track, which is about 25 minutes long, is mesmerizing. I think it was Nate Dorward who said that this disc might be oop, so grab a copy if you see one. I think I'll grab The Snake Decides and Lines Burnt in Light next. Between this disc and Arcana Major it's been a great week for amazing solo sax discs!

I have, on a few occasions, noticed BMG stocking a newer version of an item they previously had. For instance, Dexter Gordon's 'Go'. I purchased the old McMaster version of this when they had it in their Clearance section. A few months later, they received the RVG edition. Another example would be Art Blakey's 'Night at Birdland' (I forget which of the two volumes it was...). For a while, they actually had both the McMaster version and the RVG at the same time...for the same price, no less! I don't know if this is still the case but, a while back, they were charging more for the original two disc set of Bitches Brew than for the Complete four disc set. I never understood that one.

over the past day or two: Evan Parker - Monoceros Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay Coltrane - Live Trane disc 1 Last Exit - Koln Charlie Patton - Complete disc 2 The Congos - Heart of the Congos Culture - Two Sevens Clash Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions... Matthew - If you want to explore more "accessible Brotzmann my suggestions would be all of the Die Like a Dog discs (three on FMP, one on Eremite) the WELS concert and the Dried Rat Dog, both on Okkadisk. The rest of you should be ashamed for not owning Never Too Late. You must listen to 100 Kenny G tracks in penance.

Goodspeak - thanks for the Mosaic set! The Larry Young set will make a perfect addition to my collection. Congratulations on losing the "newbie" tag!
-
likewise. I'm really loking forward to hearing this set. I've never heard Seven Steps to Heaven, either, but that's not exciting me as much, for some reason.
-
Mine did. I bought mine fairly soon after it was released and it does not have a metal spine.

Axel Dorner & Kevin Drumm Thomas Lehn & Marcus Schmickler - Bart Gianni Gebbia - Arcana Major / Sonic Tarots Session Krzysztof Komeda - Astigmatic Masaoka / Nunn / Robair - Crepuscular Music

Having never heard any of Hemphill's discs it looks like the 2cd Blue Boye set reissued on crewgum might be a good place to start. I'll likely also pick up a used copy of Coon Bidness and keep my fingers crossed that Dogon A.D. will make it to disc one of these days. Either that or find a cheap vinyl copy to tide me over.

AOTW: Feb 8 - 14: Krzysztof Komeda - Astigmatic
John B replied to Geoff's topic in Album Of The Week
How many covers does this disc have??? This cover art doesn't really seem to do justice to Komeda's music:
