keeping my post count soaring... Have any of you explored Fred Anderson's work? I'm listening to Dark Days/Live in Verona right now and this album is killing me! Hamid Drake back when he was still Hank, some killer avant-groove, for lack of a better worrd, what more could you want. This is one of my favorite releases on Atavistic's UMS.

I don't have that disc, but I do have his album Outland, which I really enjoy. How would you compare the two?

Gavino Murgia in addition to being vocalist, is a fantastic alto saxophonist and Sardenian bagpipes player. "Fantastic" means super-human technique and great sense for melody. hmmmmn...I don't recall postingthat quote here... B) any recommendations for discs of his to explore?

I somehow cannot warm to Sabir Mateen's playing - he sounds so formulaic and predictable to me - like an audio excercise book of "free-jazz" saxophonist. I was recommended to try "Devine Mad Love" - any opinions on it? I haven't heard that one yet but would like to soon. have you heard We Are Not at the Opera, with Sunny Murray or any of his recordings with Test? I really enjoy all of those.
  5. I would love to, but my cd budget is currently completely blown, thanks, in part, to you. I got the Leos in the mail the other day. Time to start exploring! I'll post my thoughts back over at Funny Rat.

Raphe Malik's "Consequences" is unavailabe for themusicresource (I tried). I am interested in Bendian's stuff - the rest of the OOP Eremite stuff I will probably pass... That is the one I wanted the most! Drat. Hopefully they will come through on the Tom Bruno / Sabir Mateen disc.

I recieved my copy from http://www.themusicresource.com/ Very expressive stuff. They seem to have all of the OOP Eremites in stock. I placed an order and am hoping they come through! Not much chance these will be repressed, I'm guessing.
  8. Both Tabla Beat Science releases are great! I would also recommend his disc Charged Live, which cae out last year. A great disc, if you can still find a copy is Akira Sakata's Fisheran.com with Laswell, Sakata, Hamid Drake and Pete Cosey (yes, that Pete Cosey) on one of his first releases that I am aware of in the past few decades. I bought a copy through DMG a while back but it was a bit pricey as this is a Japan only release.
  9. Sister Christian, baby!
  10. layers. wear lots of layers. I know of one record store in the area, which didn't have much of a selection the last time I checked. I believe there is either a Borders or a Barnes and Noble in the area, too. The only restaurants we have ever tried there are Indian and Thai, both of which were good. We are planning on eating at the Thai restaurant before the Dave Holland show on the 31st. Too bad you'll be there a week early!
  11. Hamiett Bluiett - With Eyes Wide Open Malachi Thompson - 47th Street John Patton - Blue John John Patton - Along Came John Fred Anderson - Dark Day Fennesz - Endless Summer Burkhard Stangl/dieb13 - eh
  12. Claypone - My wife and I are going to the show at Dartmouth, too. It will be our first time seeing the DHBB and I am very much looking forward to it!
  13. Thank you for clarifying. I'm not familiar with the Wild Magnolias. I'll look them up on AMG.
  14. Thanks for the warning! This is a disc I've been meaning to get for a while and have never gotten around to.
  15. Masada - vol. 1 Alef Fennesz - Live in Japan AMM - Newfoundland Gunter Muller / Toshimaru Nakamura - tint
  16. I didn't realize that track was a cover. I'll have to look around for the original version.
  17. Geoff - post whatever you want, however you want. If someone doesn't like the way you frame a discussion they are free to say so, just as you are free to write in whatever way is comfortable to you. It is refreshing to hear from someone who is passionate about an album. There are no "rules" for starting a discussion, so keep the reviews coming. Two great choices, so far. I have the Mal Waldron disc and need to listen to it more than I have. I will hang my head and shame and admit that I have no Herbie Nichols in my collection. This is one of those sets I have meant to pick up for a long time and just haven't gotten around to it.
  18. Yes! A big thumbs up for this disc. The second track, "Fallin' Off the Floor" kicks all sorts of ass. I think a lot of people, even those who are put off by MMW, would really enjoy this one.
  19. I reall enjoy these BF tests for the new music I am exposed to and also for the fresh view I get of some "old favorites." It's amazing how different a tune can sound out of the context of its original album.
  20. Larry Young - Mothership William Parker Clarinet Trio - Bob's Pink Cadillac Jemeel Moondoc / Denis Charles - We Don't Andrew Cyrille Quintet - My Friend Louis Arthur Blythe - Hipmotism The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
  21. ouch! I own disc #5 and didn't recognize it. Time to bring it back out for a listen again. I also highly recommend this disc to anyone who hasn't picked it up yet. The live Quartet Out disc is great fun, too.
  22. That's a shame. The $16 or so in shipping removes any benefit to ordering this set from BMG. I've never understood their charging the full sipping price for each disc in a boxset.
  23. What is the cheapest way to buy this set from BMG? Do they run any sales that make box sets worth grabbing? I'm assuming the free shipping deal would be one way, but are there any better sales to hold out for?
  24. Thanks for posting this, it pushed me over the edge! Boomshankar!
  25. the best place to pick these records up that I have found so far is through Erstwhile. Jon Abbey distributes releases on other labels for the best prices I have been able to find. Go to the erst site and click on "Other Cds." All of these Ambarchi discs seem to be available for about $13 each.
