Categorizing Your Music Collection...
John B replied to street singer's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Things I like / Things I don't like quite so much anymore. Most of the jazz is together and, at one point, was close to being in alphabetical order. -
I thought this was a woman at first, too. Also thanks for helping with the distribution of this disc. I think my copy came from you, based on my quick glance at the package before I tore it open.
-
sounds like I will have to grab copies of both of those one day. Speaking of Brotzmann developing into a diverse musician...have you heard the WELS concert on Okkadisk? I really enjoy the vibe Hamid Drake and Mahmoud Gania bring to the performance. Definitely not your usual Brotz.

That is the only way I was able to get through each disc and keep my thoughts clear for each track.

Д.Д., what other stuff from Ayler can you recommend? I only have the Lyons box and that Albert Ayler live disc. ubu Ubu – If you don't mind my answering for Д.Д., ...my favorite disc on Ayler has to be William Parker Trio -"....and William Danced". I love this disc! Great playing by Parker, Hamid Drake and Anders Gahnold, who I had never heard before. I have also heard and enjoyed Jemeel Moondoc Trio -Live at Glenn Miller Café Vol 1, recorded on the same day as “…and William Danced,” but with Jemeel Moondoc instead of Gahnold. Hamid Drake & Assif Tsahar - "Soul Bodies, Vol 1" is another good one. My next Ayler to buy will be Exploding Customer -"Live at Glenn Miller Café.” I have never heard this one but have read many good things about it.

I hadn't picked up on this being a Sly Stone tune but, if it is, this has to be from George Howard's BN cover album of There's a Riot Goin' On. I remember Jim recommending this disc back when it went OOP. I'll need to pull out my copy of the Sly album tonight to compare the tunes.

on to disc #2: 1) this really sounds like Herbie Hancock to me, but I don't think it is. I really like this track 2) I had a hunch you would put some of his work on this mix. Not sure if this is the Ritual Trio or Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, off the top of my head. Based on the "sparse" sound I'll guess the RT. I need to get more Khalil in my collection. Great stuff! 3) Marvin. Another hunch I had based on you raving about this album a while back. Can't remember if it was on this board or not. I've never heard much Marvin beyond What's Goin' On and Let's Get It On, so I'm glad you included this. 4) No clue. I kept swinging back and forth between disliking this track as too smooth and digging its laid back vibe. 5) I agree that this sounds like a more modern take on a Dixieland tune. No clue who this is. 6) I thought this was a live Sonny Rollins boot at first, no clue who this is. 7) I'm thinking Braxton, too, but I've never heard any of his big band work. I like this...I'll need to check out whatever album this is from. 8) This sounds like Lester to me, which leads me to Basie, but I really can't be sure. I've never explored this period very thoroughly. 9) Sonny Rollins...nice track, not sure what disc this is from. 10) I feel like I should know this one but nothing is coming to mind. 11) Threadgill? Something off of Too Much Sugar for a Dime? Great song, I really enjoy his writing and arranging. more to follow...

I received the discs tonight. First impression: this mix rocks! Thanks a lot for taking the time to put this together, Jim. I'm still getting through disc one and, based on what I have heard so far, am really looking forward to disc two. I am clueless as to who most of these performers are but I have my hunches... So, without further ado... 1) Really dug the solo piano! I was very surprised by the transition to the full band section and thought it was a mis-tracked second song at first. No clue who this is but I feel like I should... 2) No clue, no chance in hell of guessing this one, even with your clue. Fun tune. 3) Pete Johnson nailed the '70's TV theme vibe. No clue. 4)No clue. I really dug this track. 5) easy one to name. At first I thought it was an imitator as I'm not familiar with the tune but no one else does it like the Godfather. 6) Blah. Not my cup of tea at all. No idea who this is and I am ok with that. 7) Thought this was Giuffre at first but this has got to be Lacy on soprano. 8) No clue...the presence of the Fender Bass is throwing me off. 9) http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Aox63mpej9f2oright? Very fun tune. I've really been digging Red Warrior recently and need to check out more of his work. 10) If this is the new Baby Dodds reissue I need to place an order w/Atavistic soon. This track rocks! 11) No chance I'll guess this one, but very nice transition to: 12) the AEC? Not sure which track this is but is sure sounds like them. 13) no clue...I need to listen to this one again. 14) I know I oknow this one, I just can't place it now... 15) no clue. I really enjoyed this disc, even the tracks I didn't really dig, dig? Looking forward to disc 2 tomorrow!

well said. the compiler should put whatever the hell they want on the disc and if I don't like it I'll say so in my review.

listening to Daredevil right now...interesting. sort of Last Exit-ish, but not quite as manic (or "Laswell-y," if you know what I mean.) I like it so far.
-
agreed. JazzLoft has good prices and ships super fast. Highly recomended. They have a great sale on selected Hat Huts right now, too.
-
Will do. I'm really looking forward to hearing this disc. If I had the Hal Russel I would have joined in. It's on my "to buy" list, but hasn't made it to the top yet. Somebody needs to ask B3-er to load cyrillic.

I've just ordered this one from THE JAZZ LOFT I didn't think JazzLoft had this disc in stock, for some reason. Thanks for the heads up! I have also ordered the disc through them. Maybe this should be an AOW sometime soon?

Amazing album. I've listened to it at least 15 times in the last couple of weeks. Highly recommended. I've never been a huge fan of theirs but I definitely agree. This is a fantastic album. I've also listened to Aenima recently, which didn't do nearly as much for me. Just finished listening to Jimmy smith - Club Baby Grand 1, now tuned into a world music show on the local radio station.

Nat Dorward wrote: "Re: Duos for Doris I've had about every reaction over the spectrum. My main problem is that it's virtually impossible to listen to free of the massive amounts of hype given the disc." I found it essential to distance myself from the hype as much as possible in order to listen to this disc. I've read a lot of the hype you refer to and think it has been a bit over the top. DFD is a great disc, one that I will probably return to many times, but it is nowhere near the top of my most esential recordings. Chaney wrote: "It wasn't until a few minutes after CD1 had ended that I realized that it had ended. Oddly enough, the ambient sound in my office took over and I began to perceive that as music! " You really need to listen to this one on headphones or really crank the volume (which may or may not be feasible at work. My wife doesn't appreciate my foing it at home, either) in order to really hear every nuance of the performance. Your point on not realizing the disc had ended and perceiving the ambient noise as music is a good one. I find that this happens quite a bit with this music, especially if I am not listening on headphones. From what I have read I think both Rowe and Tilbury are aware of this and fully support the notion of the performance never really ending. Going back a few pages here, I finally bought Brotzmann's Daredevil. The local store had it, on sale, for $12. Hard to go wrong. I'll give it a listen in the next day or so and comment on my impressions. I really need to get a copy of The Minimalism or Erik Satie soon. Anybody got a spare copy lying around?

Mobley - Soul Station Mobley - A Caddy for Daddy Rabih Abou-Khalil - The Cactus of Knowledge Tool - Laeteralus v/a - Nigeria '70 disc one (a great mix of really obscure and a few not so obscure old Afrobeat songs.)

I'll have to check out Steamboat Switzerland. It sounds like they might be right up my alley. King Ubu - let us know how those solo piano discs are once you get a chance to listen to them

I'll toss out a recommendation for a current player who has that effect on me: Ray Anderson. His Pocket Brass Band was a joy to see live.

Die Like a Dog refers to the manner in which Albert Ayler died. From an interview w/ Brotzmann that I found online: "Just to start off easy, what was the origin of the Die Like a Dog quartet name? I was writing a little article about Albert Ayler for a Swiss newspaper, and that was the same time I was hanging around Toshinori Kondo and we were thinking and talking about Ayler. You know, I know Kondo for 20 years at least, and at that point we wanted to set up a new group, another group, cause at that time I was working on one side with William Parker, for long years, and the other one was Hamid Drake, with whom I was playing a lot of duo concerts. So, we just decided to make a new band, and this article ended with the sentence, "He died like a dog." It was in my first opinion it was not meant as a title for the band, it was just because I was using the article for the booklet of the first CD of that quartet. But we realized that people liked the name, so we stayed with it. That was all. " It's funny, my wife calls this sort of music "ghost music." Sounds like she has very similar tastes with you wife!

I am really hoping you included a track from this: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A0r4zefqk7gf4 just to read your response to people's guesses.

Constantly. Variety really is the spice of life, musically. I also find that I appreciate jazz more when I revisit my old favorites with a fresh set of ears.

or that we are able to take such amazingly detailed photos like these. Thanks for sharing this link!

I've been really getting more and more interested in Erstwhile this year. I've picked up quite a few of their releases and have enjoyed all of the, to varying degrees. I have not, however, heard any of the three you mentioned. I'll pick up Particles and Smears when it is reprinted next year. Which For4Ears discs are you thinking about picking up?

That is Gunter Muller's label. I really want to hear his solo disc and the solo Le Quanh Ninh discs. You can get there really inexpensively through Erstwhile records. click on "Other Cds" and they all seem to be $11 plus shipping.
