  1. She sure is beautiful! I have to say, I think Zora is a very pretty name. Congratulations to you!
  2. hey tony you got good taste!
  3. Has anyone else read Groucho : The Life and Times of Julius Henry Marx? I HIGHLY recommend it.
  4. I remember seeing a webpage that supposedly had soundclips of Harpo in an interview or something.
  5. Groucho - "and then I bagged six tigers" Mrs Rittenhouse - "Oh captain! Did you really catch six tigers?" Groucho - "I bagged em! I bagged em to go away but they hung around all afternoon. They were the most PERSISTENT tigers I've EVER seen."
  6. here's another question for you fellas. Now, not having any money hasn't so far done anything great for my music collection, so you can understand why I usually skip past the box sets (it only make me want them more! ). But, on this site I have seen much talk about the mosaics. Are these sets in stores or online exclusively? Do I have to go to a jazz music speakeasy and say the secret password to even get a look? P.S. - Underground, I thank you for the really nice offer, but see my money situation above! Plus, I KNOW I don't have anything in my collection that you guys don't already own or know about (very small collection).
  7. I recently had the amazing chance to see this man locally. He didn't play, but he conducted the universities big bands on some of his compositions. Does anyone have any good rec's to make on his albums, compositions, or anything else they can think of? What are the opinions here of his stuff?
  8. Dan, imho, this is your perfect opportunity to just stop caring about all the B.S. (which is the whole point of ignoring the political forums, yes?) I like what you're trying to do and just wanted to give you some encouragement.
  9. Congrats and good luck on the new gig, Paul!!
  10. Aww hell yeah! That guy knocks my socks off. I remember my friend telling me how amazing he was and I just couldn't believe it until he actually played some stuff for me.
  11. Um actually it isn't unreasonable to hear "row row row your boat" and think 4 - since 6/8 is a compound duple meter. If someone hears it in 4 then they are just interpreting it as a compound quadruple meter. Not a big difference...
  12. Or Bobby Mcferrin. Please no one laugh at me....
  13. I thought "row row row your boat" was in 12/8?? Measures of 4 beats divided into 3 even subdivisions? I am probably wrong, but I always thought the main difference between 3/4 and 6/8 (besides the notational differences) were in the articulations and phrasing. In compound time the groups of three will sound and feel like subdivisions of the beat and in simple time each pulse in the group of three will feel like the base pulse. I guess I always try and see whether or not I feel comfortable tapping my foot once every three pulses (compound time) or with every pulse in the group of three (simple time).
  14. Thanks everyone, for the well wishes! And I think we all know that the wielder of cat-head power bows to no one... Navyman eh? One of my good friends is a SeaBee. As far as the worst days in boot, I'm thinking it might be the crucible at the end, but I'm sure there will be plenty of horribleness to go around.
  15. and I've enlisted in the Marine Corps. It's pretty much what I've been working on for a while here. It was a long road just to enlist - I went to MEPS three times before I finally got to swear in. I should be leaving for boot on June 1st so any prayers, well wishes, or good vibrations would be well appreciated!
  16. Okay guys, I hate to be that guy that shows up to the party, doesn't say much and then splits but alas. HAPPY B-DAY!!! and a fun time was had by all
  17. A very happy birthday to the best Jazz forum around!!
  18. I'm here! Where's everyone? I can't stay long I gotta go running in a bit.
  19. I am going to attempt to make it all the way through Bleak House.
  20. Alex, I get the feeling you are responding to me with some pretty big assumptions about what I believe, probably based on the Christian dogma you've seen characterized in movies, television or possibly in people you've met. I've tried responding to your post several times, but I can't seem to grasp your point. What is it that you are exactly trying to say? That Judas can't be held accountable for his actions because he was basically a pawn in a grander scheme, right? Furthermore, you are saying that if Judas DID have a choice, the existence of that free will implies that God is not omniscient or omnipotent?
  21. okay guys, I gotta split. It's lunch time and I'm hungry and that's a fact and it's also the truth. I didn't even have to use reason or logic to arrive at that conclusion so you might say it is a somewhat mystical hunger. See you guys on the flipside of the this!
  22. Well, I hope I don't sound equally smartassed with my answer, because this is really how I think. Or rather, truly how I think. "Truth" is a word to describe the same concept that you used for the word "facts". You wouldn't call something a "fact" unless you believed it to be "true". Yes? No? Yes, a fact is true, and can be proven to be so. How can religion be used to discover these facts? This seems to be like doing archeaology by reading books rather than getting out there and digging. I just don't see how it can accomplish anything. And in response to Ray: Hercules cheats. This is going to get me flamed, but points of view that are untested through disagreements are weak points of view. So.. Actually I disagree. I don't think facts can be proven true. Any proof of a fact depends on at least a few base assumptions that supposedly don't need to be proven true, because they are supposedly self evidently true. In other words, faith is needed in any amount of "proving" something.
