    The Yazoo Label

Got it last week, and was just able to listen to half of the first CD this morning - GREAT stuff! As to yr second question, Yazoo has reissued some of their original LPs straight to CD. Other artists - Charlie Patton, McTell, etc. have been given new releases with new remastering. I highly recommend the two (relatively) recent Patton reissues - listening to them for me was like hearing his music for the first time. I was going to say, the Charlie Patton Yazoo is amazing and essential. Never got the CD versions; now I think it may be about time...
  2. That was my first reaction, too!
  3. Count me as a fan. And it's got Shadow Wilson!
  4. Yep. Me too. Good compilation of timeless (and damn near essential) jazz.
  5. I flip for Flip. All this and Dave Tough too? Lead me to it!
  6. Please do. I'm a big fan of his stuff.
  7. Funny that in Malaysia you pay your phone bill in "ringgits."
  8. I've wondered about that album for years. Is it worth buying? (I've always been afraid that if you're a big Sonny Clark fan, as I am, the covers could just come off as annoying.) I don't know about that particular album, but John Hicks' "Music in the key of Clark" is an album I have never got tired of playing. It really evokes Clarke very well. Sounds good. And I like the title!
  9. While I agree with some of what Kenny Drew Jr. says, I get the distinct impression that he would come down hard on the Velvet Underground's first album...if it had sold a lot of copies.
  10. I've been spinning a lot of Talking Heads lately, particularly the first three albums. More Songs About Buildings and Food is still my favorite after all these years.
  11. Good question. One might ask much the same about playing "on the beat."
  12. Do we have to? No. Whew! Thank god.
  13. Yeah, our date format might not make sense, but you guys use commas where decimal points should be, so that makes us even! Not only that, what's all this calling a trillion a billion thing? (Congrats, though, on adopting the metric system.)
  14. Damn! Missed it!!
  15. I love De La myself, and would point to them (not forgetting the contributions of Prince Paul) as central to my own personal "golden age" of rap. But it's funny how most "golden ages" seem to coincide with the observer's teens and twenties. I know for a fact that the golden age of punk happened when I was 15-17.

    The Yazoo Label

I got some great stuff from Yazoo through the years...mostly vinyl double-record, single-artist anthologies. I have very few CD's from them. Too bad about Nick Perls.
  18. I guess "FCC" actually stands for Federal Crock of Crap.
  19. How about "Glenn Gould Sings"-----oh, wait a minute, that's every album he ever put out.
  20. This sale is on until when?
  21. Certainly compared to folks like Bogart, Gregory Peck, or even Alan Ladd. I guess that's what he gets for dying relatively young (not to mention being under contract at Fox, usually considered to be the corny, hick studio in comparison to the other majors). That'll learn him. Andrews was certainly a better actor than Gregory Peck (for my money anyway), but he just didn't get many plum roles.

    Prestige RVGs

    Sigh. Those were the days.
