  1. That Teddy Wilson septet with Stuff Sminth, Ben Webster and Cozy Cole sounds intriguing to say the least!
  2. I always preferred the Flamingos to the Ringtones. Damn, I was gonna say I preferred the Undertones to the Ringtones!
  3. Diana Rigg was great as Emma Peel. Never heard her sing, though.
  4. Same here! I picked this up on first release because at the time I was interested in anything that Eno did, and I was also a Talking Heads fan. For much the same reason I picked up Byrne's "Catherine Wheel" score, which I actually think holds up better. Yep. Got both of 'em on vinyl, right next to Jerry Harrison's Casual Gods... But there's no frickin' way it's been 25 years. Heck, that would make me old! I know, I know.... Think of it as just over 3 1/2 dog years. Seriously, I initially got The Catherine Wheel on tape, and it was pretty much the best-sounding pre-recorded cassette I ever heard. Eventually got the CD a little while ago (meaning perhaps about 10 years ago.) Never got the Harrison though.
  5. Personally, I don't consider a movie made 4 1/2 years after the event to be overly quick off the starting line, so to speak.
  6. My initial reaction was that there was no way I was going to see this film. But I might see it.
  7. Truer words were never posted.
  8. Never heard this one, never even seen it. But as ever, all the best to Johnny Griffin, one of the few remaining giants of bop. It may be time to spin The Congregation, The Cat, and Close Your Eyes tonight.
  9. You mean to say, it DOESN'T mean "If I'm Really Coked"?
  10. Sometime in June, I believe.
  11. I've said it before: All the great ones are going now. She will be missed. RIP
  12. I think I saw one of these killer chimps on the bus the other day. Don't know how he got all the way over here.
  13. Couldn't have said it better---or as good---myself! This is a fantastic album that doesn't get enough notice. I agree that Awakening is also a joy, but I'd have to put Conflict a notch or two higher. Something about having a lineup like Woods, Carmell Jones, Harold Land, Andrew Hill fer Godsake, and Elvin Jones, all performing at or near the top of their form. They really put this one over the top. I think I may like it even more now than I did three years ago. It's just "out" enough for me to dig, but not too out----if you know what I mean. Great choice!
  14. Too bad if they don't; I've been wanting this album for a long time.
  15. Still thinking about getting "Andrew!!!"
  16. I recently saw the normal cover, after seeing nothing but the one with the "retouched" note on it for months. I wonder if the ones with the screwup will be (or are being) sent back to Blue Note so they can insert the corrected covers and mayge SELL some of those babies. In any case, instead of buying the RVG (I already have the older issue) I got a Charlie Patton Yazoo CD.
  17. You should also try to pick up the 2 "Eminent Jay Jay" CDs on Blue Note: These recordings are a bit earlier than those on the Mosaic set, and also include some great sidemen, including Clifford Brown. Indeed, I actually have these two CD's filed with the Clifford Brown in my collection.
  18. That's the first thing I thought!! If I recall correctly, back in the 60's the music committee had actually decided to award Duke the Pulitzer for his long and distinguished career----then the GOVERNING board inexplicably broke their own rules and overturned the judgement of the music committee...so no Pulitzer. When he heard about it, Ellington made some diplomatic quip like, "I'm still too young to win a Pulitzer," or some such, but that epic screwup brought considerable ignomy to the Pulitzer, in the opinion of many.
  19. Good choice!! Finally, an Album of the Week that I already own. I'll be digging this out and listening asap. I recall enjoying it when I first bought it, but haven't played it much since. So it's high time!
  20. Seems like the great ones are all going. RIP
  21. Same here! I picked this up on first release because at the time I was interested in anything that Eno did, and I was also a Talking Heads fan. For much the same reason I picked up Byrne's "Catherine Wheel" score, which I actually think holds up better. Count me in as one who thinks the concept sounds better in theory than the result, as far as My Life In the Bush of Ghosts. I found the album quite a dissapointment at the time, though I think it's inexplicable that they aren't including "Qu'ran" on the new release....how stupid is that?
  22. This is a long-standing (and rather revolting) trend. I recall movie versions of old TV shows coming out in the 1980's. However, it does seem to have picked up steam in the last few years, or perhaps just become such an integral part of the Hollywood movie-making machinery. Ninety-nine times out of 100 it means the movie in question will be lame or worse. Then again, I'm looking forward to a movie version of Freaks & Geeks!
  23. Yep, that about sums it up.
  24. And they say no more good movies get made...
