  1. Thanks to another thread I've been listening to a lot of Blue Mitchell albums, and I kept getting the urge to put Mitchell on the CD-changer along with this album (Takin' Care of Business)----of course, Blue Mitchell's on here as well, and in top form. Sometimes my subconscious works better than my upper mind.
  2. I don't think I even saw it. But I'm afraid to ask...
  3. I wish I had a Brooks/Konitz/Marsh.
  4. I dismiss electric pianos out of hand.
  5. I feel the same way (although I'm missing Smooth As the Wind.) But yeah, his Riverside albums have something special going on.
  6. Yep!
  7. I've heard nothing but good things about this miniseries over the years. With Alec Guinness in the Smiley role it's practically a must-have! Got to buy it one of these days. (But there's so much to buy.)
  8. Kalo, what say you?
  9. Actually, I can kind of dig where you're coming from, Chuck. What J.J.J. did was technically impressive, but kind of doesn't sound like a trombone.
  10. I have to agree. Not nearly as impressive as Hank Aron's passing Ruth's record. What would really impress me is if someone could surpass Ruth's HR record not only without steroids, but while smoking, boozing, and eating to excess. That would truly be something.
  11. As a friend of mine said some time ago, payola never really went away.
  12. I've listened again to that "Reconsider Baby" compilation and rediscovered the second track: "Tomorrow Night" an unreleased Sun song that's haunting, minimalistic, and beautiful. A real "late night" number that succeeds largely because of Elvis's amazing vocal. Hard to believe this wasn't released at the time, as it's better than all but a very few of the Sun performances that WERE released. It's probably on that big multi-disc 50's box, but I haven't checked. Worth the price of the album on its own.
  13. I have to say, after all the buildup about that picture, to me he doesn't look all that bad in it. People get old. So he looks a little older than his chronological age at the time? Hardly surprising considering the tough living many jazz musicians did, particularly of that generation. Hank is Hank and will always be Hank, that's how I see it.
  14. "Seems"? Personally, I long ago joined the Riverside cult.
  15. I love the version of "Body and Soul" on Boston Blow-Up.
  16. Perhaps the brevity of the solos adds to the pressure-cooker feeling on some of these tracks.
  17. I haven't noticed drop outs (though people tell me I tend to not hear stuff like that; maybe my brain "fills in" the missing part, I don't know) but oddly the old Mosaic vinyl edition sounds better to me than the BN CD edition. But heck, I got it for conveniance. As I recall, the first, vinyl, editions of Nichols, Monk, and Tina Brooks were the very first things I ordered from Mosaic way back when.
  18. Dr. Larabee likes Hub-Tones? Now if he had framed say, Soul Station and Davis Cup I could really respect the dude... Actually, we almost saw this last night, but it wasn't playing in the proverbial theater near us. We saw Flight 93 instead. Not as uplifting, I'll bet.
  19. You hit the nail on the head. I've long had a similar reaction to him. Of course, with all the bullshit he's been tossing lately, it's hard to see him and not think of all that. (But I was a big fan of the old TV series; guess I still am. One of the all-time best "action/spy" musical themes, courtesy of Lalo Schiffrin. The main thing about the series was that the group accomplished it's 'impossible' missions through complex teamwork; the movies dispense with that in favor of Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, being the big hero. Yawn.)
  20. I also love the "Big 6" album. Johnny Griffin and Curtis Fuller on that one, very nice. Actually, I like all of Blue Mitchell's albums so much that it's impossible for me to choose a favorite. Having said that, I think Blue's Moods is a good choice. ("Sweet Pumkin"!)
  21. I hear you. I'm from the Boston area and don't drop my r's. When people ask about it, I say I was raised by broadcasters.
