  1. Hot. AGAIN.
  2. Tina Brooks. First name that popped into my head. Then Sonny Clark and Clifford Brown, of course. Lots of others. Elmo Hope, Carl Perkins... Yes!!
  3. Yes, and yes. 30-minute per side playing times tended to be a stunt and not a great idea, sound-wise. The average tended to be 18 and 1/2 minutes per side, like Chuck says. Though some were much briefer, particularly country albums.
  4. That "Why I Quit Tobacco" statement sounded very familiar. I wonder if someone published something similar in the real world around then.
  5. Dexter---Season Four
  6. Ah, I meant to catch this in the theater, never got around to it though. I should Netflix it.
  7. What about talking to a passenger? That is not just as distracting? No. There you have it.
  8. Yes, funny stuff. I love Laurie's little musical bits.
  9. Talking on cell phones while driving causes accidents, hands-free or not.
  10. No, he doesn't die 'til the middle of the 5th season. (Whoops, did I say too much?)
  11. I know! It's gone by far too fast this season.
  12. Agree with you on the new "Five-O." My wife was curious about it and we somehow ended up watching the whole pilot. Lame and air-headed to the point of hilarity. The one good thing was they kept the original theme.
  13. I always thought he sounded like he had a cold, though.
  14. Indeed, that's probably my favorite of his.
  15. Right on target with both points, Larry.
  16. Don't know, but if you can find it in black & white, Region 2, grab it. Such a fun movie. Sort of a comedy-Noir, if such a mixture makes sense; hugely entertaining.
  17. That stinks. It's time (past time) to do away with this "region 1, region 2" crapola. "One region for the whole world!" that's my rallying cry.
  18. Very hot yesterday. But it cooled off when the sun went down, thank God.
  19. Yeah, I remember hating the character last season but have found myself pulling for him ever since they all partnered up. He was really trying to prove a point last night. Red, white and blue balloons for the kid, Playboy Club, etc.etc... That last scene with his father was really bizarre. I wonder if he will be returning. Whatever happened to the kid that Don hired? Roger's nephew/cousin or whatever by marriage. Well they can't have everybody in every episode. As for Lane Pryce---it was easy to loathe him when he was putting people through their paces as the new head of Sterling Cooper; hiring two guys for the same job, etc. Then it's revealed that he's just following instructions from the big boys in the head office, and furthermore, they're treating Lane like crap too. He suddenly has to move to India, or something, just when he's starting to get used to New York and so on. That's when I started to feel some sympathy for the guy. Come to think of it, the Brits are seen to have an even less enlightened attitude toward their workers in some ways than the American corporations of this time. When that guy is crippled their attitude is, "Well, he's done, that's that." The Americans mumble something about surely there are still many things he could do for the company and the Brits are astonished and reply that no, he's CRIPPLED, he's done, forget about him. The old-fashioned, unthinking casual cruelty of that is rather stunning.
  20. For ages it was unavailable anywhere, until Criterion (God bless them) recently put it out on DVD.
  21. There was something about Lane that made me start feeling sorry for him some time ago. Now I've got even MORE reason to! (Jeeze, that horrible father...!)
  22. Boardwalk Empire is going to be another of those shows that make me wish I got HBO.
  23. When I first read this on the internet, for a couple of seconds I was sure it must be an Onion story.
  24. Lots of excellent suggestions here. I must second the ones for "Out of the Past," "The Big Steal," and "The Friends of Eddie Coyle." His performance in the latter is truly remarkable, one of his best.
