Growing Up All Wrong by Robert Christgau The Big Splat (Or How Our Moon Came To Be) by Dana Mackenzie

Why that's Bill "B" Bop of course.

Kenny---Pleased to hear that you're first Mosaic experiance was a pleasant one. But the black boxes, b&w photos and so on...that's all a part of the Mosaic aesthetic. It's like, they want the music to do the talking, not the packaging. Personally, I find their black boxes to have a certain austere beauty; very compelling to the Puritan in me. And you usually can't fault their liner notes! Different strokes I guess. Enjoy!

I'm seeing this as soon as it opens in a 'theater near me.' Which is to say, in a theater within a 75-mile radius of me.

If Blue Note re-issues this baby, I'll be in line to buy it! B)

I very much go through phases, more like binges, actually. Duke, Prez, Mobley, Sonny Clark are among the figures I come back to again and again. Lately I'm on a bit of a Benny Carter thing, along with some Pepper Adams. As for pop-rock: Fountains of Wayne are numero uno right now.

Another strong recommendation from me. I wondered when someone would get around to mentioning this set. There's so much good stuff on this (the Williams, Carter, Stewart, & Teagarden alone make it primo IMHO) that the only negative element is the sheer expense. The current True Blue/Mosaic promotion would seem to mitigate that somewhat. I say go for it!!!!

I Want to Learn About the History of SF Jazz
BruceH replied to J Larsen's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It's still there, and still a cool neigborhood place. There used to be a used record store two doors down the street called "Revolver Records." Well, that went out of business a few years back and the space was taken over by Green Apple. It's now their "Annex"---used music, fiction, magazines, DVD's, videos, and music books. (Pretty good used jazz books section.) The main store now has new books, and a new coat of paint on the facade, but the spirit of the place is intact. As you must know, Clement Street used to have loads of bookstores of all types---now Green Apple is about the only one left, but seems to be doing fine. Give it a visit when you're in town (can't guarentee you'll make a killing like in '88, but still...) -
And the AOW Chairman for Aug 24-30 is...

Excellent! I've actually got this one. I'll have to throw it on soon and give it a listen or three. -
Weird, Famous, or Infamous Neighbors/In-Laws
BruceH replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This is more like "brush with greatness" but----- The mother of a friend of a friend had Pepper Adams propose to her. I guess they were very good friends, he wanted to marry her, but she turned him down. The old "musician lifestyle" thing, no doubt. Imagine having Pepper Adams as your stepfather though. -
Saying you don't like Van Morrison because all you've ever heard by him is "Brown-Eyed Girl" is kind of like being down on the Beatles because you've only heard "Yellow Submarine" or "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da."
-
Agreed, Brad. Adams sounds in top form here. What did he die of, anyway, cancer? Every Pepper Adams album I've heard so far has been good, but the Mode/VSOP one is really great. Sometimes I wonder why he isn't more famous, as he's got to be one of the 4 or 5 best baritone sax players in all of jazz (I'd say one of the top three, but I'm trying to be objective).

Artists immediately identifiable by their sound
BruceH replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Artists
Prez...Webster...Hodges...Miles...Desmond----just some names that come immediately to mind. I agree that the greatest stylists in jazz almost always had instantly or very quickly identifiable sounds. Bird, Rollins, Monk, Hawkins, the list goes on and on. -
Just had a problem 10 minutes ago. Couldn't get on at all; tried again and everything's fine. This does seem to happen once every week or 10 days.

Obscure movies that you remember from your youth
BruceH replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Rooster, never mind the music, what about when the mutant humans take off their face-masks to reveal that THEY HAVE NO SKIN!!!! One of the most indelible and horrifying movie moments of my childhood. I was visiting relatives in Iowa, and persuaded my Uncle to take me to see Beneath the Planet of the Apes. I knew nothing about the series, just thought it looked cool in the paper. My aunt & uncle knew nothing about it either, so they took me to see it. I must have been 7 or 8 at the time. We saw it at a drive-in. Through most of it I was struggling to understand what the heck was going on... Then the bomb-worshipping scene; wierd music; "We reveal to the Holy Bomb our true faces"----then they start clutching at their faces...the skin bunches up like saran-wrap...you realize their skin had been some sort of fake plastic skin all along....and underneath was just blood vessels and muscle!!!! AAAAUUUUGH!!!!! I screamed, I covered my eyes, then I peaked through my fingers and screamed again. It was utterly horrifying. Gave me nightmares for months! I feel sorry now for my aunt and uncle; if they'd had any idea what was coming, they never would have taken me to that movie. Still gives me the shakes now, thinking about it. (Shudder) -
Get it. My one caveat is that it's not quite as sublime as the late 30s/early 40s sides he did with Lester and Billie. But if you're a Wilson fan, you'll want this. If you don't get it and it goes OOP, you'll someday be kicking yourself. (Like me with the Morgan set.) Don't let this happen to you!
-
I highly recommend the HRS set. A lot of great music on that, and it would cost you a mint to collect it piecemeal (sp?)----that is, one session at a time. I should know: I already had three or four of 'em on various vinyl compilations and I still consider the set worth it. Good sound too.

The End Times are here, people!! Really, the weather has been freaky here too. For the last couple of weeks, up until a couple days ago, it has been sunny, hot, and humid in SAN FRANCISCO! Now usually in SF you get cold fog and/or cold Pacific winds all through the Summer months. Then it clears up for two weeks in late September/early October for some Indian Summer weather, but still not a HUMID heat. Heat with humidity is something folks around here are NOT used to. Of course, compared to Summer in New England it's still not bad, but for here it's been a freak show. Meanwhile, people are dropping like flies in Europe....it's scary.

Remember that first base coach that was
BruceH replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This judge is a complete moron and should be kicked off the bench. What planet is he living on? A month or three of actual jail time may (I say MAY) have been a wake-up call to this idiot, but AT LEAST ban him from baseball games. It's the fault of the GAME because it's so violent???? HUHHH???? Even if you accept such a ludicrous assumption, what's the best way to deal with it? Encourage fans to be more violent by demonstrating that there're no conseqences for bad behavior? Maybe this jerk-off of a judge IS taking bribes. He should get a job picking up litter by the highways, maybe he's competent to do THAT. -
Green Street and Solid are my two favorite Grant Green albums lately! (Aside from the Sonny Clark stuff, that is.)

Yeah, and Kenny G would be voted President! No, Wayne Shorter would be! (And Sonny Rollins would be Sec. of State!)
