  1. Another vote for the Bebop box. Some of the tracks in it are almost impossible to find anywhere else. I'm with Bev---the occassional mistakes and aural blemishes of the Properboxes are made up for by the cheap price and generous playing-time. If the major record companies were releasing all their CD's for about $5.25 per disc, maybe they wouldn't be singing the blues now about poor sales.
  2. Personally, I don't know why we ever got rid of the Buffalo-head nickel. That was nice.
  3. I have that "Souvenirs" CD too, and it's a great single-disc compilation! (Of course, you can't go wrong with the Mosaic or JSP's; both are good.)
  4. ...Huh? I honestly haven't noticed either of these threads. Except for the "pastel colors" I would think he was talking about a different site.
  5. That Bennie Green sounds good....
  6. Yes, very interesting and far-ranging choice of covers. BTW, nice animated 'Flip' Mike!
  7. I also like the Navarro box the best. The Hawkins box is a good resource too, though.
  8. I still have record racks in the living room.
  9. WTF?? Didn't they just come out with a Matrix sequel? How many of these damn things are they gonna make, anyway?
  10. I think dark Kit Kats are a sign of the coming Apocolypse. (Or maybe I just prefer milk chocolate.)
  11. The VeeJay dates are some of my favorite Morgan!
  12. Carl Ruggles!!!!
  13. Cool! Thanks for the link, Chaney!
  14. I think of "jump" music as a mixture of 40's r&b with (perhaps pared down) big band swing music. Or as swing with a more gutbucket, bluesy approach. If you've ever heard the music of Wynonie Harris, that's 'jump blues' if anything is.
  15. I think "Rain Dance" is my favorite cut on the album. Great piece of music.
  16. Love 'em! The Jackie Mac, Dexter, and Dolphy are my favorites.
  17. Hell, you mean that isn't a real Blue Note cover that they might re-issue someday? Damn.
  18. Just about everybody hated longboxes, they were awkward, ugly, and wasteful, so it only took the industry about 8 or 9 years to get rid of 'em! And blisterpacks seemed to be specifically designed to piss off the buyer. Now if they could just ditch those stupid, annoying, clumsy, unnecessary security stick-strips that are on the top of most CD's (and sometimes on the sides as well)! Whoever designed those should hung by his thumbs.
  19. Chalk me up as one who has nothing against her, but I'm just not interested. Too much other stuff out there to get.
  20. Shit, go for it!!!
  21. Peggy Lee was great, there's no getting 'round it. I still have to get the Mosaic sometime.
  22. This was the first year that rain threatened to kill it. When it first got dark the weather seemed to have cleared up, but later it started to sprinkle, then turn to real RAIN. So we ducked into a Walgreens and bought both of our kids small umbrellas, and when we came out the rain had stopped and the sky was clearing up again! At least the kids got umbrellas with duck-face handles out of it. This year it seemed quieter than usual but then we ran into groups that seemed to be composed of two or three families trick-or-treating together (not a bad idea really). My kids seemed to think that these big crowds would jinx their haul or something; my older one would say "Avoid the crowd! Avoid the crowd!" when he saw such a group and try to get us to cross the street. Some houses were just amazing in the amount of decorations and gadgets and gewgaws that they put up. It certainly seems to have become more of an "adult" holiday than it used to be. When I was a kid, all you saw for decoration were pumkins and the occassional jack-o-lantern. Now some houses are like Disneyland. They say it's now the biggest holiday other than Christmas. Strange.
  23. Agreed! I have a very good vinyl compilation of Clovers songs and I believe it's on "Demon," Elvis Costello's re-issue label. In any case, I'm sure it's out of print. Great group, though. The 5 Royales are probably my favorite group of this type. The writing, musicianship, and overall feel of many of their songs puts them in category all their own as far as I'm concerned. God, they were great! A little while back, someone was putting out vinyl re-issues of the 5 Royales albums, with the original covers and all...anyone got those?
  24. This is a terrific album. I have it on a two-fer, but it's just been re-issued by the Koch Jazz label.
