  1. Yes, I've long thought of Something Else as the next best thing to having another Miles Davis album.
  2. I've heard of the tomato juice remedy too. When I was growing up, that's what people used to swear by, anyway. Good luck!
  3. In fact, this was the first Mosaic box I went retail on. For some reason a lot of them have turned up used in local stores for very reasonable prices---I snagged one for about $50 early this year. The only detectable difference from my other Mosaics is that the box is a bit more scuffed. Lots of good music on this baby, needless to say.
  4. I'll bet you're going to like the music in the Carmell set!!!
  5. Amen to that!! It was kind of scary seeing that hacker crap come up on screen.
  6. Get it or regret it!
  7. Much the same thing happened on the local news here, and, my relatives tell me, in New England as well. It's as if all television news has undergone an "Entertainment Tonight" treatment.
  8. Agreed. Trying to nail things down (which is a strong human tendancy) will often throw a lot of light on a subject. BTW, I've often heard/read the Blakey Birdlands referred to as the birth of Hardbop as well. Now Bird & Dizzy, that's bebop. (Birth of same, see "Minton's Playhouse.")
  9. Happy Birthday, Dan!

    Uptown. . .

I'm a big Ellington fan, but Ivie is the only one of his vocalists that I like. Go figure. Looking very forward to this new release of Uptown though. Get the lead out, Columbia!!!
  11. Where're Fountains of Wayne?
  12. Personally, the current batch and the last batch of RVG's sound particularly good to me. Maybe they've been reading boards like this one. (Was Grantstand in the last batch? That was a good one.)
  13. Yes indeed! And how about the third track, "Black"? Lately I've been shamelessly hitting the 'repeat' button on that composition. Got to pay some bills? Play "Black." Time to make supper---put on "Black." Read a book...a background of "Black" would be nice. Helping the kids with homework will surely go better with some "Black" on... Well, you get the idea.
  14. Yeah, that one is good; I also have one called "The Cats" with Tommy Flanagan and Kenny Burrell which is well worth checking out. Not world-shaking, but good stuff.
  15. From what I heard, he had inoperable cancer. Too bad.
  16. Alan Bates of Black Lion has the rights for all Fred Norsworthy produced Jazzline et.al. LPs, there was a CD of this issued in 1989 with three alternate takes added, Black Lion BLCD 760134, under Donald Byrd's (!) name, titled Groovin' For Nat. A nice session, the rhythm section with Pearson, Bob Cranshaw and Walter Perkins cooks, and the unusual two trumpet frontline is very attractive, nice to compare Byrd and Coles. This will definitely not be part of the Mosaic Select, so look for this CD: Thanks Mike!

  18. Subtracting the ones I don't have from the latest total I come up with 82 for me. Don't tell my wife.
  19. Very sorry to hear about this. RIP.
  20. Too damn many.
  21. GoM, all I can do is express my complete agreement with you about Sonny Criss! I started off with the Imperial double-CD set a couple of years ago, then bought album after album, about anything I could find of his. I found that, almost always, even if the album had a not-so-good title, an unpromising cover, even the dreaded electric bass, Criss's playing was top-notch. If only he were still with us! Do you have "This Is Criss"? It's a very good 1966 Prestige with Walter Davis on piano. I'm sure you'd like it. The Jazz In Paris album is very good as well, and the price is right. I'll have to check out that Live In Italy disc. Criss forever!!
  22. Don't feel bad, Ed...I've got almost all this stuff already, in the case of the Dial sessions on both vinyl and CD, and I'm STILL getting the JSP. I'm just a sucker. (And I agree, the Jazzmatazz site is terrific.)
  23. ...which is just what I like about 'em.
  24. Nice avatar Rooster! B)
  25. Grab whichever is cheapest.
