  1. Good one. I should re-read the whole series one of these days. (Well, years...)
  2. That one's on my list of 'never read SF classics to watch for', but haven't run across it in the local stores yet. Yeah, I'm sure it's on Amazon or some such, but half the fun of old books is finding them in a local used book store... I agree.
  3. Hmmmm.... Maybe- The Shorter/Morgan Vee-Jay The Atlantic Tristano/Konitz/Marsh and either the Anita O'Day or the 50's Mobley. Maybe they're tied. I don't know. I do know that many years ago the Herbie Nichols and the BN Monk would both have been in the top three.
  4. I recall really enjoying Edgar Pangborn's Davy. Haven't reread it since, so it's hard to say how good it really is.
  5. Isn't he the one who wrote Hiero's Journey?
  6. I'd say if they lose, Coldplay can afford it.
  7. You said it! Think I'll play some now.
  8. 88! Good grief!
  9. Pumpkin pie is a big favorite here.
  10. I listened to some of that the other day, too.
  11. Frankly I wasn't aware that Panshin had written anything other than Rite of Passage and Heinlein In Dimension. Learn somethin' every day, ya do.
  12. #1 makes no sense. But that's Hollywood for you.
  13. Does anyone else find it a trifle strange that there's a thread titled "Good riddance to record stores" in topic titled "The Vinyl Frontier"?
  14. Fireball XL5! Hah. Now there's a blast from the past. Thunderbirds!!!! Yeah!
  15. A very talented man who died far too young. Here's to you, Kenny.
  16. Let me put in a positive vote for the soprano sax (IOW, I like it.) Not when Kenny G plays it, but that hardly counts...
  17. Saw this on TV yesterday. Jack Black as Jesus Christ! :tup
  18. It's funny, I generally hate the clarinet, but I really dig the bass clarinet (Dolphy and Rivers especially). I also have little to no use for the flute, violin, and/or tuba in most instances... although sometimes they do the job. Funny, two of my favorite instrument tones are the clarinet and bass clarinet. I also love the sound of clarinet and bass clarinet, though a lot depends on who's playing them!
  19. I'm not a big fan of Spaulding either, including his flute work.
  20. Why is that something to feel guilty about?
  21. Same here. There's some harmonica stuff on the Art Ensemble box Chuck put out and I didn't like it at all. Not fond of violin in jazz either, though I don't mind Venuti's playing on the Lang/Venuti Mosaic and Grappelli's playing on the Reinhardt Mosaic. Stuff Smith, on the other hand... I really disliked his Mosaic. I love Stuff Smith! He and Joe Venuti pretty much justify the violin in jazz. For ME, anyway!
  22. Got to reluctantly agree with you there, for the most part... Cut date might be a bit late. Ouch!
  23. Got to reluctantly agree with you there, for the most part...
