TurboTax, and other home tax software...
vibes replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I used TurboTax a couple years ago and found it to be pretty easy. Last year, I just did everything through H&R Block's website, and will probably do it that way this year as well. I don't like having to install software on my computer if I'm not going to frequently use it, so I find that the web option works well for me. -
Hey, glad to see you are here! I had no idea rries and kulu se mama were one and the same...
-
rries (Bob) is a good guy. The first time I bought a CD off anybody at the BNBB, it was from him. I recently won one of his eBay auctions, and everything went smoothly there as well. I don't recall seeing him here or at AAJ, which is unfortunate.

Check these out: They're not available for sale yet, but they look really cool. I can't wait to see what else they come out with.

I found this kind of weird (bold parts added by me): REVIEW FOR JIMMY SMITH'S "BASHIN'" Although still a regular Blue Note artist (he would make four more albums for the company within the next year), Bashin' was organist Jimmy Smith's debut for Verve, a label that he would record extensively for during 1963-1972. On the first half of the program (reissued in full on this CD), Smith was for the first time joined by a big band. Oliver Nelson provided the arrangements, trumpeter Joe Newman and altoist Phil Woods have a solo apiece, and "Walk on the Wild Side" became Smith's biggest hit up to that point. The final three numbers feature Smith's regular trio with guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey swinging with soul as usual. The historical set (a bit of a turning point for Jimmy Smith's career) has its strong moments although it is not all that essential. — Scott Yanow It's not all that essential, but they gave it 5 stars anyway.

I forgot that I had this album ( ) as a part of the Mosaic set, but am listening to it right now and thoroughly enjoying it. While I really love some of Lou's up-tempo work ("Sputnik" from LOU TAKES OFF comes to mind), I find that I definitely prefer his slower, more bluesy playing. The title track from BLUES WALK really does it for me. For me, one of the best things about this album is the addition of Ray Barretto on congas. I almost always enjoy the addition of the congas to a session. Creates a nice feel as long as the playing isn't overdone, and I find Ray does a nice job of that. If you like Lou and don't have the Mosaic, it's well worth looking into. There's a lot of great music in the box.

Yet here you are, wide awake at 2:19 AM! B) True, but I went to bed at 8:45pm.

I usually wake up between 4-5am. I generally fall asleep between 9-10pm, but have been known to fall asleep on the couch as early as 7pm. I've never been a night person.

Sepultura's "Schizophrenia" album has some yelling on the first track. A long time ago, I recorded it onto my hard drive and played it in reverse. The yelling was actually one word - schizophrenia.

2003, Iowa City Jazz Festival. Andrew Hill and Fred Anderson were the highlights for me. Fred Anderson's set was the first time I ever felt moved by free/avant music. Hill's set was very intense. I'm glad I went.

Yup. There's the infamous Cannibal Corpse LP that played backwards repeats over and over "clean your room". Absolutely chilling! Really? Which one? I have a few of them... B)

According to the Music Resource page, my order shipped last night. That's roughly two and a half weeks after I placed the order. I'll have to remember to place my next order from them a few weeks before i actually want the music.

Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
vibes replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I got my copy a couple weeks ago and was finally able to listen to it this morning. Great CD! I'm very much looking forward to future listens and to the next CD. Great job, guys! -
I'm actually going to the show at Purdue University. I didn't know he was going to be playing in Chicago until after the tickets were purchased for the Purdue show. To be honest, I don't even know who Herbie is playing with. The tickets were a Christmas present from my wife. Thanks for the additional recs. The lounge does sound nice, except for one thing - we don't drink. I'll have to find some other way to get lucky.

Thanks again for all the recommendations. We'll for sure go to the Art Institute, the aquarium and at least one other place. I went to Gino's East for pizza when I visited 15 years ago, and I think we'll go there for dinner one night. We'll be seeing Herbie Hancock one night, too. Keep the recommendations coming!

See Wrigley!!! I saw it about 20 years ago, and it is well worth seeing, besides, some day they will tear it down. Who cares about a new baseball stadium anyway? I checked into seeing a game, and neither the White Sox nor the Cubs will be in town on the weekend we're going to be there. So, we're going to see a Bulls game instead. I was really hoping to go to Wrigley - the only other time I went to Chicago, about 15 years ago, the Cubs were away then, too. Either way, we're not really sports fans, but we like to go for the experience. Bulls it is.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

Mrs. vibes and I are planning a long weekend in Chicago in April. I know there are a lot of you out there who either live in Chicago or have spent considerable time there. I'd like recommendations on: - Places to see jazz - Restaurants - Music shops - Interesting things to do/see Thanks in advance.

So, what do you drink, Tap, bottled, import????

I've gotten used to it, but when I first moved to Minneapolis I thought our water tasted like a garden hose. Having said that, it would seem that I really enjoy the taste of a garden hose. I've had water out of the tap in many different places, and the worst-tasting I've ever had was in Jackson, Tennessee. Pretty sad, considering the fact that I've had tap water in places like Hong Kong and stuff. -
Spring, 2003 - Someone posts a link for a cheap buy-it-now auction for Tyrone Washington's "Natural Essence" on eBay. Vibes, so excited that he's going to pee his pants, clicks on the link and wins the auction. A few days later, a god damned LP shows up. I don't have a turntable and don't plan buying one. Anyone want to buy a sealed Japanese pressing of this album?

As a punishment when I was in high school, my father used to make me listen to an Ellis Marsalis CD he had gotten by mistake from Columbia House. At the time, I listened primarily to death metal, so listening to this Marsalis stuff was torture. He'd make me listen to the whole CD before I could go back to my own music. The way I got into jazz is a little unusual. My interest started with some tracks on Atheist's (a death metal band) last album which were somewhat jazzy. I decided to try looking for some vibraphone music, because for some reason it reminded me of music I liked in the "Tom & Jerry" cartoons I liked as a kid. A local CD store had a computer that would allow you to search by instrument, so I searched for vibraphone music and settled on a Verve Lionel Hampton/Oscar Peterson comp. That was about seven years ago, and today, I primarily listen to jazz. My jazz collection is several times larger than my metal collection ever was. Amazing how that happens.

I haven't really had good luck with themusicresource...Twice I've had a long wait for things listed as "in stock". I ordered a Criss Cross (Wycliffe Gordon) from them 12 days ago. It was supposedly 'in stock' but the order is still in progress. And no replies to my queries. I'll never order from them again. Anybody have a good experience with The Music Resource? I placed an order on December 27 and my order is still listed as "incomplete." I emailed customer service a few days ago and never got a reply.

I wrote a 1-star review in which I criticized other people for rating the album before they'd even heard it. My review was deleted from the page within a few days of posting it. There are now only positive comments about the album, regardless of the fact that none of the reviewers have even heard it. The spirit of the BNBB lives on.
