  1. Nice to see you posting in a non-political forum, John.
  2. Jim, I think you should consider doing this, regardless. There have been times where I've thought it would be cool to make a donation to the band or to the site, just as a way of saying "thank you" for making this a great place to hang out, and to lend a little extra support. Having a little PayPal icon or something like that wouldn't be a bad thing, and I'm sure there are other people who feel the same way.
  3. I don't know if it's up your alley, Hans, but the "Charlie Brown Christmas" CD sounds excellent. I picked it up today and have it on right now. The main thing that has caught my attention thus far is the quality of the bass sound - to my ears, far improved over the previous CD edition. Just comparing this with the other Guaraldi SACD I have (Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus), I think they did a better job with that one than the Christmas one, but both sound great, regardless.
  4. No kids came to our apartment, and none ever have. I was never a big fan of Halloween, so that's alright by me. I took my wife to an oral surgeon to have her wisdom teeth that afternoon, so she was pretty out of it for the rest of the day. She had general anesthesia there, and then 800mg Ibuprofen pills after that, so that was it for her for the rest of the day. We just watched the first season of "Alias" on DVD. Nothing too exciting...
  5. Kit Kat Bites rule! I sit near our food buyer and Hershey keeps sending him Bites. The diet goes out the window when I see them sitting on the table.
  6. Blasphemy! This is my favorite of the Hancock BN's. I hope you'll listen to it some more and learn to enjoy it. The music strikes me as very contemplative, very introverted. I enjoy that quality in music. Anyway, happy listening!
  7. I just spoke with my father again and he said everyone in the evacuated areas of Claremont had been allowed to return home. He said he knew a couple people that had lost their homes, and expected that to rise. He did say, however, that the fires in Claremont had mostly died out. The only damage to his property, he said, was all the ash in the swimming pool. I hope the rest of you in SoCal make it out of this OK.
  8. I hope no one has been affected by this. My parents live in Claremont and everyone in their area was evacuated (the fire department apparently forgot their street, so they stayed). My father told me that no one he knew had their house burn down, but that some family friends' solar panels melted . My parents have important things packed into their cars, should the need to evacuate arise. Pretty scary stuff.
  9. I too post far more here than at AAJ. AAJ is OK, but for me the major difference is that it has a much more "sterile," much more regimented feel to it. Organissimo feels very free, very organic. Threads of all kinds pop up out of nowhere, and have almost always been allowed to go wherever the posters wanted to take them. I like that - it makes me laugh, and I often learn something in the process too. This feels like a home, whereas AAJ often feels like a library or a museum or something like (if that makes sense) to me.
  10. Just wanted to mention that I opened up the Kenny Burrell and am listening to it right now. It sounds excellent and Kenny was really on that day. A definite must for anyone who likes jazz guitar, or holiday music. The LPR series is very affordably priced, as well.
  11. Gotta love the cover!
  12. While Vince Guaraldi's "Charlie Brown Christmas" is definitely my favorite, I also highly recommend Kenny Burrell's "Have Yourself a Soulful Christmas." Someone burned me a copy a while back, and I've always enjoyed it. The great thing about this is (much to my surprise) that it was just released in the Verve LPR series. My copy just came in the mail today, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Still, the LPR series is cheap and I'm glad Verve put this one out.
  13. I love that Walt Dickerson record too! This is the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of this thread. Of course, no one ever would have guessed that I liked this album.
  14. Pay online, Weizen. They'll send you email notifications when your bills are ready, too. What I hate about credit card companies is if you're carrying a balance, then pay it all off, you still get charged interest the next month, even though you thought you paid the card all off. Credit card companies are bloodsuckers.
  15. The first session that came to mind is Jackie McLean's DESTINATION OUT! session. For me, it's a session where everything went perfectly. However, I decided long ago that I want to die peacefully - my life has generally been very hectic. So with that in mind, I choose: Grant Green - STREET OF DREAMS It's very peaceful and laid back. The music clicks, the musicians interacted beautifully with each other, and there is, for me, a very intimate feeling to this session. I'd just lay down, cross my arms and listen to the last few bars of "Somewhere in the Night," and then die a very happy man.
  16. This is one of my favorite Grant Green albums. I didn't realize it was the AOW, and listened to it a couple times over the weekend and then again today. To me, there is a very special vibe to this record. For me, a lot of that comes from the addition of Bobby Hutcherson to the session. I wish he had recorded more with organists, as "Street of Dreams" and "Let 'em Roll" are at the very top of my list of favorite organ sessions. This album is great for a quiet afternoon or evening. It always calms my nerves. I've never agreed with people that call this album a snooze, or say that nothing special happens. For me, having something really special happen on the album doesn't necessarily make the album great. It's the musicians, the way they interact and the way they make me feel that make an album great, for me. This is a lazy, dreamy album, and I like it that way. The renditions of the songs on the album are great, and I'm glad this was a very early addtion to my jazz collection. Four and a half stars.
  17. I have a sealed Japanese LP of this, if anyone's interested.
  18. I hate cleaning bathrooms. We have two bathrooms, one for me and one for my wife, and I pay her to clean mine.
  19. I read on our corporate intranet yesterday that everything was supposed to have been restickered in our stores (Best Buy) for this change. The idea was that customers were going to come in with the expectation of finding CD's at lower prices, so it was best to get it taken care of right away. I'll have to go to one of the local stores and verify that it's actually taken place. Also, if I read the article correctly, it looks like with the lower prices on CD's, Universal is also pulling most of its funding for advertising in our circulars and for in-store promotions. Interesting...
  20. Same here...and over the last 48 hours, I've had many problems accessing the board. And when I've been able to access it, it has generally been very, very slow.
  21. Kind of off topic, but all this talk about Wes and Mel made me pull out the Wes Riverside set and listen for Mel a bit more. So anyway, right before I woke up this morning, I had a dream that I went to an auditorium on a college campus, and Mel was there trying to push a new CD of religious music. I asked him if he was the guy that recorded with Wes Montgomery, and he told me excitedly that he was, and took me over to a B3 to show me some stuff. A few minutes later, who should appear but Diana Krall ( ), but Mel won't give her the time of day. So, she walks up to me and asks what I did to get him to talk. I said "I don't know, I just asked him about Wes Montgomery. Give me your email address, and I'll tell you more about Wes." Diana walks away with a bewildered look on her face. End of dream.
  22. I have this one and it's WAY better than SOFT SAMBA. No vibraphone from McFarland on OCTOBER SUITE, unfortunately.
  23. Roy Ayers - Virgo Vibes Johnny Hodges Mosaic Hank Mobley - Thinking of Home Andrew Hill - Passing Ships Gary McFarland - Soft Samba Lee Morgan - Sonic Boom Gato Barbieri - Bolivia John Klemmer - Involvement Gerry Mulligan/Paul Desmond - Two of a Mind Right now: Grant Green - Goin' West. I'm liking this one a lot more than I thought I would. The JRVG sounds good to my ears, and the music is very, very laid back.
  24. I finally listened to Shrdlu's recommendation and picked this one up. The wordless vocals are a major turn-off to me. To be honest, the music kind of reminds me of the elevator music my grandfather used to have playing in his dental office. It would be nice if the vibes were a little higher in the mix too. Very relaxing music, whatever the case.
