  1. Cleveland frequently pays a big chunk in order to get a better player back (eg Casey Blake to LAD for Carlos Santana). Tribe may also be paying part of Westbrook's salary. If Wood trade goes through (and ignoring how much of his $10.5M salary still paid by Tribe), the Indians roster will have a total of 4 players making over $500K a season: Travis Hafner $11.5M (ouch! The spirit of Wayne Garland lives!) Grady Sizemore $5.8M (on DL for the season, so much promise, but...) Fausto Carmona $5.1M Rafael Perez $800K And while the unsuccessful small market teams may look and smell like minor league outfits, that doesn't mean the rich and strong just get to plunder there. You want Kerry Wood (...you do, you really do!), you have to give something up. Chris Perez, for the moment, ain't available.
  2. Looks like cash or player to be named for KWood. Looks like Chris Perez is once again doing his Joe Borowski imitation. Oh well. A nice second start for Josh Tomlin.
  3. Back up the truck. Russell Branyan dealt to Seattle for OF Ezequiel Carrera and SS Juan Diaz. Tribe has had quite a bit of recent success in deals with Mariners. Jhonny Peralta dealt to Detroit for P Giovanni Soto (not much "pure stuff", more deception/command, 19 years old). The end of an era. Peralta has hit more HRs than any Indian in team history. What started off so promising never lived up to his first season. Austin Kearns dealt to NYY for Toby Namtlader (Shapiro claims "prospect with major league value"). And now it appears that Jake Westbrook is headed to StL. And Josh Tomlin may make his second start on only 3 days rest. Why? That means Fausto Carmona stays (...a good thing, I think), and that Kerry Wood is still available. Step right up! Veteran that throws hard, perfect setup guy, never mind the 6+ ERA. He only has 20 innings on his arm this year.
  4. It's clear now. Tony Sipp and Joe Smith are no Mitch Talbot. Yankees continue to catch so many breaks.
  5. Strained back for Talbot. NYY get 7 innings (or more) against the Tribe bullpen.
  6. Which NY team did he announce for?
  7. You forgot Mel Allen. And Jim Kaat. Tony Kubek Obviously different strokes for different folks, but to my mind, there is no frickin' way that Tim McCarver belongs in this conversation. Admittedly, I listen to few if any local NY broadcasts, but that guy is barruttal. Scully, Barber, Allen--much appreciated.
  8. Thanks Jim, Joe, and Randy for all the fun music over the years. You have a great deal to be proud about. Glad I caught you at Twins in DC a few years ago. Too bad I didn't work the tables that night in order to meet mr jazz, Bertrand, weizen, and perhaps some other DC-based O-Board celebrities. ...On the other hand, probably best that such a congregation was not documented on film. Good luck on all the new ventures, and please check in here from time to time. No RIP's. Carpe diem!
  9. All that material on a single (expensive) disc. Wow!
  10. Four game sweep of the Tigers by the Indians! Jeanmar Gomez gives up only a pair of unearned runs over 7 innings in his ML debut (...still headed back to AAA tonight), and Jhonny Peralta hits an inside-the-park homer. Tribe now only 16 games under .500, and a scant 1.5 games behind KC for fourth place in the AL Central.

  12. You may be right about Dolan. I can honestly say that I've never researched it, but at the time of the purchase from Jacobs, there was no cheering in the streets that the Indians had a new sugar daddy owner. I think the general consensus at the time was that the owner was a tightwad. The wiki biography on Larry reports that he went to high school in Cleveland (the powerhouse St. Ignatius), got a law degree at Notre Dame, served for a bit in the Marines, worked in the prosecutor's office in Geagua County (NE Ohio), before going into private practice in Chardon, Ohio. How much did he inherit? Yes, Carlos Santana is now the best player on the Indians. And they only had to trade the beard (Casey Blake) to get him. Some chatter that he should be in the ROY discussion. LaPorta has started hitting after being sent down once (or twice). He's also been battling some injuries. I try not to get too excited or too scared (Travis Hafner, anyone?). Mitch Talbot, acquired from the Rays for Kelly Shoppach, has also been a pleasant surprise. Add Jhonny Peralta to the long list of names to be shipped elsewhere (or in his case, option not exercised for next season). Santana, however, is the only one that appears to be contributing right away. Patience.
  13. Prior owner of the Indians, Dick Jacobs, was willing to spend a fair amount. He overpaid young guys to get them to stay a bit longer (starting with Nagy and S Alomar)--trading some dollar security for an extra year of two. But no Indians players ever signed the gonzo free agency contracts, they all left or were traded. But at least Jacobs was willing to spend some. And the stars aligned for a glorious run (...sadly sans world championship) in the late 90s. At least they helped the Braves win one. How may of those guys will end up in hall of fame (Thome, Ramirez, Vizquel)? Jacobs bought Tribe for $35M in 1986 and sold it for $323M in 2000--perhaps not quite Steinbrennerian. Current owner is Larry Dolan, uncle of the guy that owns the Knicks and NY Rangers. Don't know how much money Larry has, but he's definitely not spending it. I suspect that he doesn't actually have that much. Everyone in town wishes that Dan Gilbert, the Cavs owner/gilted LeBron lover, would buy the Indians, and the Browns for that matter. At least Gilbert is willing to spend his own money to improve facilities and (try to) attract talent. I believe Cavs were a top 5 payroll team (...until about a week ago). I was always disgusted by Steinbrenner, primarily for style reasons. What an arrogant SOB. But hey George, RIP.
  14. Actually I think Jesse had nothing to do with the fine. Stern rebuked JJ as well. I hadn't realized that Gilbert and Mark Cuban are fairly close--it's starting to fit together...
  15. Mike Redmond is now available.* He's been credited with helping turn around all-star Fausto Carmona. His .206 BA should not be too shocking to the system. *So are Austin Kearns, Kerry Wood, Jhonny Peralta, Jake Westbrook.
  16. Brian Windhorst, one of the few NBA writers I respect these days, paints the "Goin' to Miami" picture. He's been cautious throughout so I think it's reasonable to treat what he writes as likely to be true. Story
  17. And I'm comforted to know he's actually been to Cleveland.
  18. Couple of comments. 1. Looks like they will do a sign and trade. LeBron will get the 6th year and max cash, Cavs will get two first round draft picks, two second round draft picks, and a $16M trade exception that they can try to parlay into other players. I think they also get the right to swap first round picks with Miami next year (...just in case Cavs have a better season...). I'm not so confident that they will be able to land something useful with the trade exception and it expires in a year, but we shall see. They certainly are motivated. Also not sure what they will accomplish with the last pick (or nearby) in the first round. Recent experience not so inspiring. But they can be used in trades. 2. Management certainly was not successful in landing another top tier player during the LeBron era. Plenty of blame to go around on that one. Gilbert/Ferry certainly tried, and while it is fashionable to bash Ferry as a GM, I think he made a number of good acquisitions. Face it, free agents have to be paid a premium to play in Cleveland due to the size of the market and the weather. [see Ray Allen going to the Sonics, and Larry Hughes' contract.] Having LeBron on the team made it feasible to contemplate signing top FAs, but they didn't come. I don't think this was because mgmt was unwilling. LeBron has superhuman powers, but apparently not any to convince big time guys to join him in CLE. My recent delusions included the possibility that Bosh would come in a sign-and-trade this year (despite public announcements by Bosh against going to CLE, LeBron would convince him), or that LeBron would sign a 6 yr deal, everyone would relax, and his buddy Chris Paul would arrive in two years when his deal was up (taking Jamison's salary slot). 3. LeBron could have signed longer term deals with the Cavs. He chose not to, primarily to maintain his options and keep mgmt "motivated". What happened? Gilbert/Ferry went all in signing/trading for players with a constant "win now" mentality. Turns out, in this case, that that was not so useful for "winning now". The displayed impatience is also sad. Jordan didn't win a title until his 7th season. LeBron just completed his 7th season. Nice to see that Durant, only 2 yrs in the association, has signed a long term deal. Bodes well for OKC. 4. I'm not into conspiracy theories, but I currently think the formation of the "Justice League of America" (several heroes with super human powers that somehow can't get much done on their own) was pretty much pre-ordained. Just needed to have a team or two in the position that they could sign all three. Thank goodness it was somewhere warm! LeBron's post-season this year raised questions. I put most of it on the elbow, but in retrospect... 5. Cleveland will get over it. The bond with the home grown product was especially close, so it may take awhile. Cavs will go all out this year, probably make the playoffs as a 6-8th seed. Byron Scott will bring a refreshing uptempo style. Not sure if the highly competitive owner will ever be willing to go into full rebuild mode, but that will be necessary in a market like Cleveland.
  19. Agreed. Gilbert letter definitely cringe-inducing. But enough about sports. Time for music. Cue the orchestra!
  20. Yes, referring to himself in the third person is extremely tiresome. And he has every right to move on to another team, even if it has a certain bus tossing element. Just done in such a crass manner. Kobe did similar crap with demanding to be traded, meeting with the Clippers (if I recall correctly), etc, didn't he? Fortunately his people didn't turn it into an hour long infomercial. For this we can all be thankful. Kudos to Kevin Durant for signing a long term deal with a small market team on the rise, and not making a big production out of it. I'm a fan.
  21. Don't worry, Cleveland will "get over itself" (WTF!!!). The best athlete in town since Jim Brown (if not better), a local product, a kid who grew up in very challenging situation who as far as I know hasn't gotten into legal trouble [not raping women in Colorado, not getting into bar fights, not promoting anti-police videos, no drugs, gangs, gambling etc., ...seems like a refreshing change] And a damn good team basketball player. A bit of sadness/angst/frustration is reasonable. Thanks LeBron for the 7 exciting seasons in Cleveland. You've rarely been revolting, until this post-season (apparent lack of effort against the ancient Celtics) and this offseason. This ESPN infomercial was pretty damn crass. Could you have thought a bit about what you would say to your fellow NE Ohioans? Apparently not. Congrats on the big contract (although you could have made more at home). Wish you would have bothered to sign one long term one in Cleveland. But you didn't. At least the Cavs owner went for it, going over the salary cap rather than wasting a season or two of DWade's career dumping salary. Ultimately the stars did not align (as they do for all champs to a certain degree), so you've moved on. Superman, but not super enough to deliver another free agent (like Bosh) or a championship. Cleveland will get over it. So Byron Scott will get to coach a team built around Antawn Jamison and Mo Williams. It could be worse. Probably still more entertaining than the local baseball or football squads. Thank got NBA free agency is basically over. David Stern is still smiling ear to ear...
  22. Anti-Cleveland snark is so played out.
  23. I'm watching a few matches with interest in the worldwide spectacle, and not drawing any stereotypes about nations, their players, their fans, the sport, etc. Just watched Brazil v. Cote d'Ivoire. Brazil looked good, but this match did not live up to the pre-game hype (at least as hyped by US television).
